Ecclésiaste 2:26

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

2

Je me suis dit à moi-même: "Allons!
A la gaîté j’ai dit: "Tu es folie! Et à la joie: "A quoi sers-tu?"
J’entrepris de grandes choses: je me bâtis des palais, je me plantai des vignes.
8 כָּנַ֤סְתִּי לִי֙ גַּם־כֶּ֣סֶף וְזָהָ֔ב וּסְגֻלַּ֥ת מְלָכִ֖ים וְהַמְּדִינ֑וֹת עָשִׂ֨יתִי לִ֜י שָׁרִ֣ים וְשָׁר֗וֹת וְתַעֲנֻג֛וֹת בְּנֵ֥י הָאָדָ֖ם שִׁדָּ֥ה וְשִׁדּֽוֹת׃ Je m’amassai aussi de l’argent et de l’or, les trésors précieux des rois et des provinces; je me procurai des chanteurs et des chanteuses, ce qui fait les délices des fils d’Adam, de nombreuses odalisques.
11 וּפָנִ֣יתִֽי אֲנִ֗י בְּכׇל־מַעֲשַׂי֙ שֶֽׁעָשׂ֣וּ יָדַ֔י וּבֶֽעָמָ֖ל שֶׁעָמַ֣לְתִּי לַעֲשׂ֑וֹת וְהִנֵּ֨ה הַכֹּ֥ל הֶ֙בֶל֙ וּרְע֣וּת ר֔וּחַ וְאֵ֥ין יִתְר֖וֹן תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ Mais quand je me mis à considérer toutes les œuvres accomplies par mes mains et tous les tracas que je m’étais imposés, je constatai que tout était vanité et pâture de vent, et qu’il n’est point d’avantage durable sous le soleil.
12 וּפָנִ֤יתִֽי אֲנִי֙ לִרְא֣וֹת חׇכְמָ֔ה וְהוֹלֵל֖וֹת וְסִכְל֑וּת כִּ֣י ׀ מֶ֣ה הָאָדָ֗ם שֶׁיָּבוֹא֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־כְּבָ֖ר עָשֽׂוּהוּ׃ Puis, je me mis à passer en revue sagesse, folie et sottise: "Car, me disais-je, que [pourra faire] l’homme qui viendra après le roi? Celui-ci aura déjà tout fait."
Et comment se fait-il que le sage meure à l’égal du fou?

For to the man that is good in His sight He giveth wisdom, and knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner He giveth the task, to gather and to heap up, that he may leave to him that is good in the sight of God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

English · The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

For to the man who is good before Him, He has given [(viz. 2:24)] wisdom, and knowledge, and joy [i.e., a heart to occupy himself with Torah and mitzvoth and to rejoice in his lot with food and drink and clean garments]; and to the sinner He has given preoccupation with the amassing and the gathering [of wealth] — to give (it) to him who is good before G-d [viz. Esther 8:2]. This, too, [(one man toiling; the other, taking)] is vanity [(i.e., one of the vanities placed before men)] and breaking of spirit.

For to the person who is good before Him, He gives wisdom and knowledge and joy, and to the one who misses the mark, He gives the task to increase and to gather up and to give for good before God. This is also a vanishing mist and misleading perception.

For to the man who is good in His sight, He gives wisdom, knowledge and joy; but to the sinner, He gives the urge to gather and accumulate—that he should [ultimately] hand it [on to him] who is good in the sight of God; this, too, is vanity and vexation of spirit.

Commentaires sur Ecclésiaste 2:26

Rashi

English

For to the man who is good in His sight. Before God, mentioned above, “that it is from the hand of God.”

He gives wisdom, knowledge and joy. A heart [i.e., intellect] to engage in Torah [study] and in [fulfilling] the commandments and to rejoice in his portion of eating, drinking, and [donning] clean clothing.

But to the sinner He gives the urge. A habit and concern to hoard and gather, and to give to him who is good before God, as the matter is stated, “and Esther put Mordechai in charge of Haman’s estate.”

This too. Is one of the vanities that were given to the creatures, that they labor, and someone else takes.
