Esther 7:4

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

7

3 וַתַּ֨עַן אֶסְתֵּ֤ר הַמַּלְכָּה֙ וַתֹּאמַ֔ר אִם־מָצָ֨אתִי חֵ֤ן בְּעֵינֶ֙יךָ֙ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְאִם־עַל־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ ט֑וֹב תִּנָּֽתֶן־לִ֤י נַפְשִׁי֙ בִּשְׁאֵ֣לָתִ֔י וְעַמִּ֖י בְּבַקָּשָׁתִֽי׃ La reine Esther répondit en ces termes: « Si j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, et si tel est le bon plaisir du roi, puisse-t-on, à ma demande, me faire don de la vie et, à ma requête, sauver mon peuple!
9 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר חַ֠רְבוֹנָ֠ה אֶחָ֨ד מִן־הַסָּרִיסִ֜ים לִפְנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ גַּ֣ם הִנֵּה־הָעֵ֣ץ אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֪ה הָמָ֟ן לְֽמׇרְדֳּכַ֞י אֲשֶׁ֧ר דִּבֶּר־ט֣וֹב עַל־הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ עֹמֵד֙ בְּבֵ֣ית הָמָ֔ן גָּבֹ֖הַּ חֲמִשִּׁ֣ים אַמָּ֑ה וַיֹּ֥אמֶר הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ תְּלֻ֥הוּ עָלָֽיו׃ Alors Harbona, un des eunuques, dit devant le roi: « Ne voilà-t-il pas que la potence, préparée par Aman pour Mardochée, qui a parlé pour le salut du roi, se dresse dans la maison d’Aman, haute de cinquante coudées! Qu’on l’y pende! » s’écria le roi.
10 וַיִּתְלוּ֙ אֶת־הָמָ֔ן עַל־הָעֵ֖ץ אֲשֶׁר־הֵכִ֣ין לְמׇרְדֳּכָ֑י וַחֲמַ֥ת הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ שָׁכָֽכָה׃ {פ}

For we have been sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, killed, and annihilated. And if we had been sold as man-servants and maid-servants, I would have kept still; but the oppressor takes no account of the king's loss. [If he really intended your benefit, he would have advised you to sell them for slaves or to keep them and their seed as slaves for yourself.]

For we were sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, slaughtered, and annihilated. Now, had we been sold as slaves and maidservants, I would have remained silent, but the oppressor has no regard for losses incurred by his majesty.

Rashi

English

For the oppressor has no regard for losses incurred by his majesty. He is not concerned about the king’s loss, for if he had sought your benefit, he should have said, “Sell them as slaves and maidservants and take the money,” or “keep them now to be your slaves, they and their descendants.”
