Exode 11:2

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

11

Aliya 4

10 וּמֹשֶׁ֣ה וְאַהֲרֹ֗ן עָשׂ֛וּ אֶת־כׇּל־הַמֹּפְתִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה לִפְנֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֑ה וַיְחַזֵּ֤ק יְהֹוָה֙ אֶת־לֵ֣ב פַּרְעֹ֔ה וְלֹֽא־שִׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מֵאַרְצֽוֹ׃ {ס}         Or, Moïse et Aaron avaient exécuté tous ces miracles à la vue de Pharaon mais l’Éternel endurcit le cœur de Pharaon et il ne renvoya point les Israélites de son pays.

Speak, I pray you, in the ears of the people, that every man ask of his (Egyptian) neighbor and every woman ask of her neighbor vessels of silver and vessels of gold, [so that the righteous one, Abraham, not say "and they shall serve them and they shall afflict them" (Genesis 15:3) He did fulfill, but "and afterwards they shall go out with great wealth" (Ibid. 14) He did not fulfill.]

דבר נא באזני העם וישאלו, they needed to be encouraged to ask for this as they might have worried about the Egyptians pursuing them in order to retrieve their riches. It worked in reverse; the very fact that the Egyptians chased after the Israelites, i.e. reneged, was the immediate reason G’d came to the Israelites’ assistance and drowned their pursuers. That is what made them absolutely free.
