Genèse 2:25

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

2

3 וַיְבָ֤רֶךְ אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶת־י֣וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י וַיְקַדֵּ֖שׁ אֹת֑וֹ כִּ֣י ב֤וֹ שָׁבַת֙ מִכׇּל־מְלַאכְתּ֔וֹ אֲשֶׁר־בָּרָ֥א אֱלֹהִ֖ים לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃ {פ}

5 וְכֹ֣ל ׀ שִׂ֣יחַ הַשָּׂדֶ֗ה טֶ֚רֶם יִֽהְיֶ֣ה בָאָ֔רֶץ וְכׇל־עֵ֥שֶׂב הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה טֶ֣רֶם יִצְמָ֑ח כִּי֩ לֹ֨א הִמְטִ֜יר יְהֹוָ֤ה אֱלֹהִים֙ עַל־הָאָ֔רֶץ וְאָדָ֣ם אַ֔יִן לַֽעֲבֹ֖ד אֶת־הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃ Or, aucun produit des champs ne paraissait encore sur la terre, et aucune herbe des champs ne poussait encore; car l’Éternel-Dieu n’avait pas fait pleuvoir sur la terre, et d’homme, il n’y en avait point pour cultiver la terre.
16 וַיְצַו֙ יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהִ֔ים עַל־הָֽאָדָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר מִכֹּ֥ל עֵֽץ־הַגָּ֖ן אָכֹ֥ל תֹּאכֵֽל׃ L’Éternel-Dieu donna un ordre à l’homme, en disant: "Tous les arbres du jardin, tu peux t’en nourrir;

Rashi

English

"and they were not embarrassed". Because they were not aware of [the concept of] (lit. path of) modesty [which requires the ability] to distinguish between good and evil. And although he was given [enough] awareness to name all the animals, he was not given the Evil Inclination until he ate from the tree and [only then] was imbued with the Evil Inclination and became aware of the difference between good and evil.

ערומים ולא יתבוששו, because while in that state of innocence all their activities were aimed at pleasing their Creator. When this is the case, one has no reason to feel ashamed of anything. Just as eating and drinking was an activity they engaged in, in order to remain healthy and be able to carry out the tasks assigned to them by G’d, so marital intercourse was an activity designed exclusively to fulfill the commandments to produce more members of their species. Instead of using hands and feet to carry out other aspects of G’d’s will, in this instance they had to use their genitals for this purpose.

Radak (David Kimhi)

English

ויהיו ערומים, with a dagesh in the letter ו

ולא יתבוששו, this verse tells us that until after they had eaten from the tree of knowledge they had not experienced a feeling of shame due to the fact that their entire bodies were fully exposed. Seeing that they had not yet engaged in sexual intercourse due to their not having experienced a desire for copulation, their sexual organs did not appear to them as any different from all their other organs. They had no reason to be ashamed of them.
