1 וַיִּבְרַ֣ח דָּוִ֔ד (מנוות) [מִנָּי֖וֹת] בָּרָמָ֑ה וַיָּבֹ֞א וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ׀ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוֹנָתָ֗ן מֶ֤ה עָשִׂ֙יתִי֙ מֶֽה־עֲוֺנִ֤י וּמֶֽה־חַטָּאתִי֙ לִפְנֵ֣י אָבִ֔יךָ כִּ֥י מְבַקֵּ֖שׁ אֶת־נַפְשִֽׁי׃ David s’enfuit de Naïot près de Rama et vint trouver Jonathan, à qui il dit: "Qu’ai-je fait à ton père, quel est mon tort, quelle est ma faute à son égard, pour qu’il en veuille à ma vie?"

2 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר ל֣וֹ חָלִ֘ילָה֮ לֹ֣א תָמוּת֒ הִנֵּ֡ה (לו עשה) [לֹֽא־יַעֲשֶׂ֨ה] אָבִ֜י דָּבָ֣ר גָּד֗וֹל א֚וֹ דָּבָ֣ר קָטֹ֔ן וְלֹ֥א יִגְלֶ֖ה אֶת־אׇזְנִ֑י וּמַדּ֩וּעַ֩ יַסְתִּ֨יר אָבִ֥י מִמֶּ֛נִּי אֶת־הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּ֖ה אֵ֥ין זֹֽאת׃ "Oh! non, lui répondit-il, tu ne mourras point: mon père ne fait rien, ni grande ni petite chose, sans me l’avoir fait connaître; pourquoi donc m’aurait-il laissé ignorer ce dessein? Cela n’est pas."

3 וַיִּשָּׁבַ֨ע ע֜וֹד דָּוִ֗ד וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ יָדֹ֨עַ יָדַ֜ע אָבִ֗יךָ כִּֽי־מָצָ֤אתִי חֵן֙ בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ וַיֹּ֛אמֶר אַל־יֵֽדַע־זֹ֥את יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן פֶּן־יֵעָצֵ֑ב וְאוּלָ֗ם חַי־יְהֹוָה֙ וְחֵ֣י נַפְשֶׁ֔ךָ כִּ֣י כְפֶ֔שַׂע בֵּינִ֖י וּבֵ֥ין הַמָּֽוֶת׃ David insista avec serment et dit: "Ton père sait bien que j’ai trouvé faveur à tes yeux, et il se sera dit: Que Jonathan n’en sache rien, il en serait affligé… Mais, certes, par le Dieu vivant et ta propre vie! Il n’y a qu’un pas entre moi et la mort."

4 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן אֶל־דָּוִ֑ד מַה־תֹּאמַ֥ר נַפְשְׁךָ֖ וְאֶעֱשֶׂה־לָּֽךְ׃ {פ}
Jonathan dit à David: "Que veux-tu donc que je fasse pour toi?"

5 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר דָּוִ֜ד אֶל־יְהוֹנָתָ֗ן הִֽנֵּה־חֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ מָחָ֔ר וְאָנֹכִ֛י יָשֹׁב־אֵשֵׁ֥ב עִם־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ לֶאֱכ֑וֹל וְשִׁלַּחְתַּ֙נִי֙ וְנִסְתַּרְתִּ֣י בַשָּׂדֶ֔ה עַ֖ד הָעֶ֥רֶב הַשְּׁלִשִֽׁית׃ David répondit à Jonathan: "C’est demain la néoménie, et je dois être assis à table près du roi. Tu me permettras de m’absenter, et je me cacherai dans la campagne ’jusqu’au troisième soir.

6 אִם־פָּקֹ֥ד יִפְקְדֵ֖נִי אָבִ֑יךָ וְאָמַרְתָּ֗ נִשְׁאֹל֩ נִשְׁאַ֨ל מִמֶּ֤נִּי דָוִד֙ לָרוּץ֙ בֵּֽית־לֶ֣חֶם עִיר֔וֹ כִּ֣י זֶ֧בַח הַיָּמִ֛ים שָׁ֖ם לְכׇל־הַמִּשְׁפָּחָֽה׃ Si ton père remarque mon absence, tu diras: David m’a demandé la permission de courir à Bethléem, sa ville, où toute sa famille célèbre le sacrifice annuel.

7 אִם־כֹּ֥ה יֹאמַ֛ר ט֖וֹב שָׁל֣וֹם לְעַבְדֶּ֑ךָ וְאִם־חָרֹ֤ה יֶחֱרֶה֙ ל֔וֹ דַּ֕ע כִּֽי־כָלְתָ֥ה הָרָעָ֖ה מֵעִמּֽוֹ׃ Si alors il dit: Bon! C’est le salut pour ton serviteur; mais s’il se met en colère, sache qu’il a résolu mon malheur.

8 וְעָשִׂ֤יתָֽ חֶ֙סֶד֙ עַל־עַבְדֶּ֔ךָ כִּ֚י בִּבְרִ֣ית יְהֹוָ֔ה הֵבֵ֥אתָ אֶֽת־עַבְדְּךָ֖ עִמָּ֑ךְ וְאִם־יֶשׁ־בִּ֤י עָוֺן֙ הֲמִיתֵ֣נִי אַ֔תָּה וְעַד־אָבִ֖יךָ לָמָּה־זֶּ֥ה תְבִיאֵֽנִי׃ {פ}
Tu agiras amicalement envers ton serviteur, car c’est dans une alliance divine que tu l’as fait entrer avec toi. Que si je suis en faute, fais-moi mourir toi-même, et pourquoi m’amènerais-tu à ton père?"

9 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן חָלִ֣ילָה לָּ֑ךְ כִּ֣י ׀ אִם־יָדֹ֣עַ אֵדַ֗ע כִּֽי־כָלְתָ֨ה הָרָעָ֜ה מֵעִ֤ם אָבִי֙ לָב֣וֹא עָלֶ֔יךָ וְלֹ֥א אֹתָ֖הּ אַגִּ֥יד לָֽךְ׃ {ס} Jonathan répondit: "Loin de toi cette pensée! Certes, si je savais ta perte arrêtée dans l’esprit de mon père, est-ce que je ne te le ferais pas savoir?"

10 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר דָּוִד֙ אֶל־יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן מִ֖י יַגִּ֣יד לִ֑י א֛וֹ מַה־יַּעַנְךָ֥ אָבִ֖יךָ קָשָֽׁה׃ {ס} "Mais, dit David à Jonathan, qui m’avertira, si ton père t’adresse à toi-même une parole sévère?"

11 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוֹנָתָן֙ אֶל־דָּוִ֔ד לְכָ֖ה וְנֵצֵ֣א הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה וַיֵּצְא֥וּ שְׁנֵיהֶ֖ם הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ {ס} "Viens, dit Jonathan à David, sortons dans la campagne." Et tous deux s’en allèrent dans la campagne.

12 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוֹנָתָ֜ן אֶל־דָּוִ֗ד יְהֹוָ֞ה אֱלֹהֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ כִּֽי־אֶחְקֹ֣ר אֶת־אָבִ֗י כָּעֵ֤ת ׀ מָחָר֙ הַשְּׁלִשִׁ֔ית וְהִנֵּה־ט֖וֹב אֶל־דָּוִ֑ד וְלֹא־אָז֙ אֶשְׁלַ֣ח אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְגָלִ֖יתִי אֶת־אׇזְנֶֽךָ׃ Et Jonathan dit à David: "Par l’Éternel, Dieu d’Israël! Je sonderai mon père dans ces trois jours; s’il est bien disposé pour David, et si alors je ne te l’envoie pas révéler,

13 כֹּה־יַעֲשֶׂה֩ יְהֹוָ֨ה לִיהוֹנָתָ֜ן וְכֹ֣ה יֹסִ֗יף כִּֽי־יֵיטִ֨ב אֶל־אָבִ֤י אֶת־הָרָעָה֙ עָלֶ֔יךָ וְגָלִ֙יתִי֙ אֶת־אׇזְנֶ֔ךָ וְשִׁלַּחְתִּ֖יךָ וְהָלַכְתָּ֣ לְשָׁל֑וֹם וִיהִ֤י יְהֹוָה֙ עִמָּ֔ךְ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיָ֖ה עִם־אָבִֽי׃ que le Seigneur en fasse tant et plus à Jonathan! Que si mon père se complaisait dans la pensée de te nuire, je te le révélerai, je te ferai partir, et tu t’en iras en paix; et que le Seigneur t’assiste comme il a assisté mon père!

14 וְלֹ֖א אִם־עוֹדֶ֣נִּי חָ֑י וְלֹא־תַעֲשֶׂ֧ה עִמָּדִ֛י חֶ֥סֶד יְהֹוָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א אָמֽוּת׃ Et puisses-tu, tant que je vivrai, puisses-tu m’être bienveillant au nom du Seigneur, pour que je ne meure point;

15 וְלֹֽא־תַכְרִ֧ית אֶֽת־חַסְדְּךָ֛ מֵעִ֥ם בֵּיתִ֖י עַד־עוֹלָ֑ם וְלֹ֗א בְּהַכְרִ֤ת יְהֹוָה֙ אֶת־אֹיְבֵ֣י דָוִ֔ד אִ֕ישׁ מֵעַ֖ל פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ et ne jamais retirer ta bienveillance à ma maison; pas même quand le Seigneur aura fait disparaître de la terre chacun des ennemis de David!"

16 וַיִּכְרֹ֥ת יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן עִם־בֵּ֣ית דָּוִ֑ד וּבִקֵּ֣שׁ יְהֹוָ֔ה מִיַּ֖ד אֹיְבֵ֥י דָוִֽד׃ Ainsi Jonathan contracta ce pacte avec la maison de David: "Que Dieu demande compte du parjure aux ennemis de David!"

17 וַיּ֤וֹסֶף יְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ לְהַשְׁבִּ֣יעַ אֶת־דָּוִ֔ד בְּאַהֲבָת֖וֹ אֹת֑וֹ כִּֽי־אַהֲבַ֥ת נַפְשׁ֖וֹ אֲהֵבֽוֹ׃ {ס} Et Jonathan continua d’adjurer David au nom de son affection pour lui, car il l’aimait comme lui-même.

18 וַיֹּאמֶר־ל֥וֹ יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן מָחָ֣ר חֹ֑דֶשׁ וְנִפְקַ֕דְתָּ כִּ֥י יִפָּקֵ֖ד מוֹשָׁבֶֽךָ׃ Jonathan lui dit: "C’est demain néoménie; ton absence sera remarquée, ta place étant vide.

19 וְשִׁלַּשְׁתָּ֙ תֵּרֵ֣ד מְאֹ֔ד וּבָאתָ֙ אֶל־הַמָּק֔וֹם אֲשֶׁר־נִסְתַּ֥רְתָּ שָּׁ֖ם בְּי֣וֹם הַֽמַּעֲשֶׂ֑ה וְיָ֣שַׁבְתָּ֔ אֵ֖צֶל הָאֶ֥בֶן הָאָֽזֶל׃ Parvenu au troisième jour, tu t’enfonceras encore plus avant, jusqu’au lieu où tu étais caché le jour de l’événement, et tu attendras près de la pierre itinéraire.

20 וַאֲנִ֕י שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת הַחִצִּ֖ים צִדָּ֣הֿ אוֹרֶ֑ה לְשַֽׁלַּֽח־לִ֖י לְמַטָּרָֽה׃ Moi, je lancerai trois flèches de ce côté, comme pour tirer à la cible;

21 וְהִנֵּה֙ אֶשְׁלַ֣ח אֶת־הַנַּ֔עַר לֵ֖ךְ מְצָ֣א אֶת־הַחִצִּ֑ים אִם־אָמֹר֩ אֹמַ֨ר לַנַּ֜עַר הִנֵּ֥ה הַחִצִּ֣ים ׀ מִמְּךָ֣ וָהֵ֗נָּה קָחֶ֧נּוּ ׀ וָבֹ֛אָה כִּי־שָׁל֥וֹם לְךָ֛ וְאֵ֥ין דָּבָ֖ר חַי־יְהֹוָֽה׃ puis, j’enverrai le jeune esclave ramasser les flèches. Si je lui dis: Vois, les flèches sont en deçà de toi, prends-les! alors reviens, car il y aura sécurité pour toi et nul danger, par I’Éternel!

22 וְאִם־כֹּ֤ה אֹמַר֙ לָעֶ֔לֶם הִנֵּ֥ה הַחִצִּ֖ים מִמְּךָ֣ וָהָ֑לְאָה לֵ֕ךְ כִּ֥י שִֽׁלַּחֲךָ֖ יְהֹוָֽה׃ Mais si je dis au jeune homme: Vois, les flèches sont en avant de toi, va-t-en, car le Seigneur veut ton départ.

23 וְהַ֨דָּבָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּ֖רְנוּ אֲנִ֣י וָאָ֑תָּה הִנֵּ֧ה יְהֹוָ֛ה בֵּינִ֥י וּבֵינְךָ֖ עַד־עוֹלָֽם׃ {ס} Quant à la parole que nous avons échangée, toi et moi, l’Éternel en est, entre nous deux, l’immuable garant."

24 וַיִּסָּתֵ֥ר דָּוִ֖ד בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה וַיְהִ֣י הַחֹ֔דֶשׁ וַיֵּ֧שֶׁב הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ (על) [אֶל־]הַלֶּ֖חֶם לֶאֱכֽוֹל׃ David resta caché dans la campagne. La néoménie venue, le roi se mit à table pour le repas.

25 וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב הַ֠מֶּ֠לֶךְ עַל־מ֨וֹשָׁב֜וֹ כְּפַ֣עַם ׀ בְּפַ֗עַם אֶל־מוֹשַׁב֙ הַקִּ֔יר וַיָּ֙קׇם֙ יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב אַבְנֵ֖ר מִצַּ֣ד שָׁא֑וּל וַיִּפָּקֵ֖ד מְק֥וֹם דָּוִֽד׃ Le roi s’était assis à sa place, comme d’habitude sur son siège près du mur, Jonathan se tint debout, Abner prit place auprès de Saül, et le siège de David resta inoccupé.

26 וְלֹא־דִבֶּ֥ר שָׁא֛וּל מְא֖וּמָה בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֑וּא כִּ֤י אָמַר֙ מִקְרֶ֣ה ה֔וּא בִּלְתִּ֥י טָה֛וֹר ה֖וּא כִּי־לֹ֥א טָהֽוֹר׃ {ס} Saül ne fit aucune observation ce jour-là. Il se disait: "C’est un accident. Il est sans doute impur, oui, il est impur!"

27 וַיְהִ֗י מִֽמׇּחֳרַ֤ת הַחֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ הַשֵּׁנִ֔י וַיִּפָּקֵ֖ד מְק֣וֹם דָּוִ֑ד {פ}
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שָׁאוּל֙ אֶל־יְהוֹנָתָ֣ן בְּנ֔וֹ מַדּ֜וּעַ לֹא־בָ֧א בֶן־יִשַׁ֛י גַּם־תְּמ֥וֹל גַּם־הַיּ֖וֹם אֶל־הַלָּֽחֶם׃ Mais le second jour de la néoménie, la place de David étant encore vacante, Saül dit à son fils Jonathan: "Pourquoi le fils de Jessé n’a-t-il paru ni hier ni aujourd’hui au repas?"

28 וַיַּ֥עַן יְהוֹנָתָ֖ן אֶת־שָׁא֑וּל נִשְׁאֹ֨ל נִשְׁאַ֥ל דָּוִ֛ד מֵעִמָּדִ֖י עַד־בֵּ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃ Jonathan répondit à Saül: "C’est que David m’a demandé la permission d’aller à Bethléem.

29 וַיֹּ֡אמֶר שַׁלְּחֵ֣נִי נָ֡א כִּ֣י זֶ֩בַח֩ מִשְׁפָּחָ֨ה לָ֜נוּ בָּעִ֗יר וְה֤וּא צִוָּה־לִי֙ אָחִ֔י וְעַתָּ֗ה אִם־מָצָ֤אתִי חֵן֙ בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ אִמָּ֥לְטָה נָּ֖א וְאֶרְאֶ֣ה אֶת־אֶחָ֑י עַל־כֵּ֣ן לֹא־בָ֔א אֶל־שֻׁלְחַ֖ן הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ {ס} Il a dit: Laisse-moi partir, car nous avons un banquet de famille dans la ville, et mon frère lui-même me l’a demandé. Si donc j’ai trouvé faveur à tes yeux, permets-moi de m’échapper pour visiter mes frères. C’est pour cela qu’il n’est pas venu à la table du roi."

30 וַיִּֽחַר־אַ֤ף שָׁאוּל֙ בִּיה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֔וֹ בֶּֽן־נַעֲוַ֖ת הַמַּרְדּ֑וּת הֲל֣וֹא יָדַ֗עְתִּי כִּֽי־בֹחֵ֤ר אַתָּה֙ לְבֶן־יִשַׁ֔י לְבׇ֨שְׁתְּךָ֔ וּלְבֹ֖שֶׁת עֶרְוַ֥ת אִמֶּֽךָ׃ Saül se mit en colère contre Jonathan et lui dit: "Fils perfide et rebelle! Crois-tu que j’ignore que tu chéris le fils de Jessé, à ta honte et à la honte des flancs de ta mère?

31 כִּ֣י כׇל־הַיָּמִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר בֶּן־יִשַׁי֙ חַ֣י עַל־הָאֲדָמָ֔ה לֹ֥א תִכּ֖וֹן אַתָּ֣ה וּמַלְכוּתֶ֑ךָ וְעַתָּ֗ה שְׁלַ֨ח וְקַ֤ח אֹתוֹ֙ אֵלַ֔י כִּ֥י בֶן־מָ֖וֶת הֽוּא׃ {ס} Non, tant que le fils de Jessé sera vivant sur la terre, ni toi ni ta royauté ne pourrez subsister! Partant, ordonne qu’on me l’amène, car il a mérité la mort,"

32 וַיַּ֙עַן֙ יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן אֶת־שָׁא֖וּל אָבִ֑יו וַיֹּ֧אמֶר אֵלָ֛יו לָ֥מָּה יוּמַ֖ת מֶ֥ה עָשָֽׂה׃ Répondant à Saül, son père, Jonathan lui dit: "Pourquoi serait-il mis à mort? Qu’a-t-il fait?"

33 וַיָּ֨טֶל שָׁא֧וּל אֶֽת־הַחֲנִ֛ית עָלָ֖יו לְהַכֹּת֑וֹ וַיֵּ֙דַע֙ יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן כִּי־כָ֥לָה הִ֛יא מֵעִ֥ם אָבִ֖יו לְהָמִ֥ית אֶת־דָּוִֽד׃ {ס} Saül lança son javelot contre lui pour le frapper; Jonathan reconnut alors que son père avait résolu la mort de David.

34 וַיָּ֧קׇם יְהוֹנָתָ֛ן מֵעִ֥ם הַשֻּׁלְחָ֖ן בׇּחֳרִי־אָ֑ף וְלֹֽא־אָכַ֞ל בְּיוֹם־הַחֹ֤דֶשׁ הַשֵּׁנִי֙ לֶ֔חֶם כִּ֤י נֶעְצַב֙ אֶל־דָּוִ֔ד כִּ֥י הִכְלִמ֖וֹ אָבִֽיו׃ {ס} Jonathan se leva de table, exaspéré, et il ne prit aucune nourriture le jour de cette seconde néoménie, affligé qu’il était au sujet de David, parce que son père l’avait outragé.

35 וַיְהִ֣י בַבֹּ֔קֶר וַיֵּצֵ֧א יְהוֹנָתָ֛ן הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה לְמוֹעֵ֣ד דָּוִ֑ד וְנַ֥עַר קָטֹ֖ן עִמּֽוֹ׃ Le matin venu, Jonathan se rendit aux champs, à l’endroit convenu avec David; un jeune serviteur l’accompagnait.

36 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לְנַֽעֲר֔וֹ רֻ֗ץ מְצָ֥א נָא֙ אֶת־הַ֣חִצִּ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָנֹכִ֖י מוֹרֶ֑ה הַנַּ֣עַר רָ֔ץ וְהוּא־יָרָ֥ה הַחֵ֖צִי לְהַעֲבִרֽוֹ׃ Il dit à son serviteur: "Cours ramasser, je te prie, les flèches que je lancerai." Le serviteur courut, mais lui, il lança les flèches de manière à le dépasser.

37 וַיָּבֹ֤א הַנַּ֙עַר֙ עַד־מְק֣וֹם הַחֵ֔צִי אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָרָ֖ה יְהוֹנָתָ֑ן וַיִּקְרָ֨א יְהוֹנָתָ֜ן אַחֲרֵ֤י הַנַּ֙עַר֙ וַיֹּ֔אמֶר הֲל֥וֹא הַחֵ֖צִי מִמְּךָ֥ וָהָֽלְאָה׃ Comme le serviteur atteignit l’endroit où Jonathan avait dirigé les flèches, celui-ci lui cria: "Mais les flèches sont en avant de toi!"

38 וַיִּקְרָ֤א יְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י הַנַּ֔עַר מְהֵרָ֥ה ח֖וּשָׁה אַֽל־תַּעֲמֹ֑ד וַיְלַקֵּ֞ט נַ֤עַר יְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ אֶת־[הַ֣חִצִּ֔ים] (החצי) וַיָּבֹ֖א אֶל־אֲדֹנָֽיו׃ Puis Jonathan cria au serviteur: "Vite, hâte-toi, ne t’arrête point!" Et le serviteur de Jonathan ramassa les flèches et revint vers son maître.

39 וְהַנַּ֖עַר לֹא־יָדַ֣ע מְא֑וּמָה אַ֤ךְ יְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ וְדָוִ֔ד יָדְע֖וּ אֶת־הַדָּבָֽר׃ {ס} Or, le serviteur ne s’était douté de rien; Jonathan et David seuls étaient d’intelligence.

40 וַיִּתֵּ֤ן יְהֽוֹנָתָן֙ אֶת־כֵּלָ֔יו אֶל־הַנַּ֖עַר אֲשֶׁר־ל֑וֹ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֔וֹ לֵ֖ךְ הָבֵ֥יא הָעִֽיר׃ Jonathan remit ses armes à son serviteur et lui dit: "Va, porte cela à la ville."

41 הַנַּ֘עַר֮ בָּא֒ וְדָוִ֗ד קָ֚ם מֵאֵ֣צֶל הַנֶּ֔גֶב וַיִּפֹּ֨ל לְאַפָּ֥יו אַ֛רְצָה וַיִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ שָׁלֹ֣שׁ פְּעָמִ֑ים וַֽיִּשְּׁק֣וּ ׀ אִ֣ישׁ אֶת־רֵעֵ֗הוּ וַיִּבְכּוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶת־רֵעֵ֔הוּ עַד־דָּוִ֖ד הִגְדִּֽיל׃ Le serviteur parti, David vint du côté du midi, tomba la face contre terre et se prosterna trois fois.
