1 וְעַתָּ֥ה שְׁמַ֖ע יַעֲקֹ֣ב עַבְדִּ֑י וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בָּחַ֥רְתִּי בֽוֹ׃ Or, écoute, Jacob, ô mon serviteur! Israël, toi mon élu!

2 כֹּה־אָמַ֨ר יְהֹוָ֥ה עֹשֶׂ֛ךָ וְיֹצֶרְךָ֥ מִבֶּ֖טֶן יַעְזְרֶ֑ךָּ אַל־תִּירָא֙ עַבְדִּ֣י יַעֲקֹ֔ב וִישֻׁר֖וּן בָּחַ֥רְתִּי בֽוֹ׃ Ainsi parle l’Éternel, ton auteur, qui t’a formé dès le sein maternel, et qui sera ton appui: "Sois sans crainte, ô mon serviteur Jacob, Yechouroun, mon élu!

3 כִּ֤י אֶצׇּק־מַ֙יִם֙ עַל־צָמֵ֔א וְנֹזְלִ֖ים עַל־יַבָּשָׁ֑ה אֶצֹּ֤ק רוּחִי֙ עַל־זַרְעֶ֔ךָ וּבִרְכָתִ֖י עַל־צֶאֱצָאֶֽיךָ׃ Car je veux répandre de l’eau sur le sol altéré, des rivières sur la terre aride; je veux répandre mon esprit sur ta postérité et ma bénédiction sur tes descendants.

4 וְצָמְח֖וּ בְּבֵ֣ין חָצִ֑יר כַּעֲרָבִ֖ים עַל־יִבְלֵי־מָֽיִם׃ Ils pousseront à travers les herbages comme les saules au bord des eaux courantes.

5 זֶ֤ה יֹאמַר֙ לַיהֹוָ֣ה אָ֔נִי וְזֶ֖ה יִקְרָ֣א בְשֵֽׁם־יַעֲקֹ֑ב וְזֶ֗ה יִכְתֹּ֤ב יָדוֹ֙ לַֽיהֹוָ֔ה וּבְשֵׁ֥ם יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יְכַנֶּֽה׃ {פ}
L’un dira: "Je suis à l’Éternel," l’autre se réclamera du nom de Jacob; tel signera de sa main pour le Seigneur et se fera gloire du nom d’Isràël.

6 כֹּה־אָמַ֨ר יְהֹוָ֧ה מֶלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל וְגֹאֲל֖וֹ יְהֹוָ֣ה צְבָא֑וֹת אֲנִ֤י רִאשׁוֹן֙ וַאֲנִ֣י אַחֲר֔וֹן וּמִבַּלְעָדַ֖י אֵ֥ין אֱלֹהִֽים׃ Ainsi parle l’Éternel, roi et libérateur d’Israël, l’Éternel-Cebaot: "Je suis le premier, je suis le dernier, hors moi point de Dieu!

7 וּמִי־כָמ֣וֹנִי יִקְרָ֗א וְיַגִּידֶ֤הָ וְיַעְרְכֶ֙הָ֙ לִ֔י מִשּׂוּמִ֖י עַם־עוֹלָ֑ם וְאֹתִיּ֛וֹת וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר תָּבֹ֖אנָה יַגִּ֥ידוּ לָֽמוֹ׃ Qui est comme moi? Qu’il proclame, qu’il expose qu’il me déduise les faits, depuis que j’ai fondé les races primitives; et les faits prochains et ceux de l’avenir, qu’il les annonce!

8 אַֽל־תִּפְחֲדוּ֙ וְאַל־תִּרְה֔וּ הֲלֹ֥א מֵאָ֛ז הִשְׁמַעְתִּ֥יךָ וְהִגַּ֖דְתִּי וְאַתֶּ֣ם עֵדָ֑י הֲיֵ֤שׁ אֱל֙וֹהַּ֙ מִבַּלְעָדַ֔י וְאֵ֥ין צ֖וּר בַּל־יָדָֽעְתִּי׃ Ne craignez rien, ne vous alarmez point: ne vous l’ai-je pas dès longtemps appris et révélé, et n’êtes-vous pas mes témoins? Est-il un Dieu autre que moi, un Rocher protecteur sans mon aveu?

9 יֹצְרֵי־פֶ֤סֶל כֻּלָּם֙ תֹּ֔הוּ וַחֲמוּדֵיהֶ֖ם בַּל־יוֹעִ֑ילוּ וְעֵדֵיהֶ֣ם הֵ֗ׄמָּׄהׄ בַּל־יִרְא֛וּ וּבַל־יֵדְע֖וּ לְמַ֥עַן יֵבֹֽשׁוּ׃ Les fabricants d’images sculptées sont tous néant, et leurs beaux ouvrages ne servent de rien; eux-mêmes en sont témoins, mais ils ne voient ni ne comprennent, aussi seront-ils confondus.

10 מִֽי־יָצַ֥ר אֵ֖ל וּפֶ֣סֶל נָסָ֑ךְ לְבִלְתִּ֖י הוֹעִֽיל׃ Qui donc va façonner un dieu, mouler une statue, incapables de se rendre utiles?

11 הֵ֤ן כׇּל־חֲבֵרָיו֙ יֵבֹ֔שׁוּ וְחָרָשִׁ֥ים הֵ֖מָּה מֵאָדָ֑ם יִֽתְקַבְּצ֤וּ כֻלָּם֙ יַעֲמֹ֔דוּ יִפְחֲד֖וּ יֵבֹ֥שׁוּ יָֽחַד׃ Certes tous ses adeptes seront confondus, les artisans eux-mêmes ne sont que des mortels. Qu’ils s’assemblent tous, qu’ils comparaissent! Ils seront terrifiés et confondus ensemble.

12 חָרַ֤שׁ בַּרְזֶל֙ מַֽעֲצָ֔ד וּפָעַל֙ בַּפֶּחָ֔ם וּבַמַּקָּב֖וֹת יִצְּרֵ֑הוּ וַיִּפְעָלֵ֙הוּ֙ בִּזְר֣וֹעַ כֹּח֔וֹ גַּם־רָעֵב֙ וְאֵ֣ין כֹּ֔חַ לֹא־שָׁ֥תָה מַ֖יִם וַיִּיעָֽף׃ L’ouvrier qui travaille le fer [manie] une hache, attise les charbons, façonne [la chose] à coups de marteau; il y dépense toute la force de son bras, endure et la faim qui l’exténue et la soif qui l’épuise.

13 חָרַ֣שׁ עֵצִים֮ נָ֣טָה קָו֒ יְתָאֲרֵ֣הוּ בַשֶּׂ֔רֶד יַעֲשֵׂ֙הוּ֙ בַּמַּקְצֻע֔וֹת וּבַמְּחוּגָ֖ה יְתׇאֳרֵ֑הוּ וַֽיַּעֲשֵׂ֙הוּ֙ כְּתַבְנִ֣ית אִ֔ישׁ כְּתִפְאֶ֥רֶת אָדָ֖ם לָשֶׁ֥בֶת בָּֽיִת׃ L’ouvrier qui travaille le bois étend le cordeau, dessine [l’idole] avec la craie, la polit avec le rabot et la proportionne à l’aide du compas; il la modèle d’après la forme humaine, magnifique simulacre d’homme, pour être à demeure fixe dans la maison!

14 לִכְרׇת־ל֣וֹ אֲרָזִ֔ים וַיִּקַּ֤ח תִּרְזָה֙ וְאַלּ֔וֹן וַיְאַמֶּץ־ל֖וֹ בַּעֲצֵי־יָ֑עַר נָטַ֥ע אֹ֖רֶן וְגֶ֥שֶׁם יְגַדֵּֽל׃ Il s’est coupé des cèdres, il a pris un rouvre et un chêne, en les choisissant vigoureux parmi les arbres de la forêt; il a planté des pins, que la pluie fait grandir.

15 וְהָיָ֤ה לְאָדָם֙ לְבָעֵ֔ר וַיִּקַּ֤ח מֵהֶם֙ וַיָּ֔חׇם אַף־יַשִּׂ֖יק וְאָ֣פָה לָ֑חֶם אַף־יִפְעַל־אֵל֙ וַיִּשְׁתָּ֔חוּ עָשָׂ֥הוּ פֶ֖סֶל וַיִּסְגׇּד־לָֽמוֹ׃ Tout cela sert à l’homme de combustible; il en prend une partie pour se chauffer, une autre pour allumer le feu qui doit faire cuire son pain; puis encore il fait un dieu et tombe à genoux, en taille une idole et se courbe devant elle!

16 חֶצְיוֹ֙ שָׂרַ֣ף בְּמוֹ־אֵ֔שׁ עַל־חֶצְיוֹ֙ בָּשָׂ֣ר יֹאכֵ֔ל יִצְלֶ֥ה צָלִ֖י וְיִשְׂבָּ֑ע אַף־יָחֹם֙ וְיֹאמַ֣ר הֶאָ֔ח חַמּוֹתִ֖י רָאִ֥יתִי אֽוּר׃ La moitié donc, il la livre au feu; sur cette moitié il met rôtir sa viande, la mange et s’en rassasie; ou bien il s’y chauffe et dit: "Ah! la bonne chaleur! Je sens la flamme!"

17 וּשְׁאֵ֣רִית֔וֹ לְאֵ֥ל עָשָׂ֖ה לְפִסְל֑וֹ (יסגוד) [יִסְגׇּד־]ל֤וֹ וְיִשְׁתַּ֙חוּ֙ וְיִתְפַּלֵּ֣ל אֵלָ֔יו וְיֹאמַר֙ הַצִּילֵ֔נִי כִּ֥י אֵלִ֖י אָֽתָּה׃ Et puis le reste, il en fait un dieu, son idole; il l’adore, il se prosterne, il lui adresse des prières et s’écrie: "Protège-moi, car, tu es mon Dieu!"

18 לֹ֥א יָדְע֖וּ וְלֹ֣א יָבִ֑ינוּ כִּ֣י טַ֤ח מֵֽרְאוֹת֙ עֵינֵיהֶ֔ם מֵהַשְׂכִּ֖יל לִבֹּתָֽם׃ Ils ne savent pas, ils ne comprennent pas! Non, leur œil est trop obtus pour voir, leur cœur pour comprendre.

19 וְלֹֽא־יָשִׁ֣יב אֶל־לִבּ֗וֹ וְלֹ֨א דַ֥עַת וְלֹֽא־תְבוּנָה֮ לֵאמֹר֒ חֶצְי֞וֹ שָׂרַ֣פְתִּי בְמוֹ־אֵ֗שׁ וְ֠אַ֠ף אָפִ֤יתִי עַל־גֶּחָלָיו֙ לֶ֔חֶם אֶצְלֶ֥ה בָשָׂ֖ר וְאֹכֵ֑ל וְיִתְרוֹ֙ לְתוֹעֵבָ֣ה אֶעֱשֶׂ֔ה לְב֥וּל עֵ֖ץ אֶסְגּֽוֹד׃ Pas un ne réfléchit en lui-même, n’a de sens ni de raison pour dire: "J’ai employé la moitié à faire du feu, et sur ses charbons j’ai cuit le pain, rôti la viande dont je me nourris, et du restant je ferais une impure idole, je rendrais hommage à une souche de bois!"

20 רֹעֶ֣ה אֵ֔פֶר לֵ֥ב הוּתַ֖ל הִטָּ֑הוּ וְלֹא־יַצִּ֤יל אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹ֙ וְלֹ֣א יֹאמַ֔ר הֲל֥וֹא שֶׁ֖קֶר בִּימִינִֽי׃ {ס} Il se repaît de cendres, son cœur abusé l’égare, il ne sait pas s’affranchir lui-même en disant: "N’est-ce pas le mensonge qu’étreint ma main?"

21 זְכׇר־אֵ֣לֶּה יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כִּ֣י עַבְדִּי־אָ֑תָּה יְצַרְתִּ֤יךָ עֶֽבֶד־לִי֙ אַ֔תָּה יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֹ֥א תִנָּשֵֽׁנִי׃ Songe à ceci, Jacob, et toi, ô Israël, car tu es mon serviteur; je t’ai formé expressément, toi, pour être mon serviteur: Israël, ne m’oublie pas!

22 מָחִ֤יתִי כָעָב֙ פְּשָׁעֶ֔יךָ וְכֶעָנָ֖ן חַטֹּאותֶ֑יךָ שׁוּבָ֥ה אֵלַ֖י כִּ֥י גְאַלְתִּֽיךָ׃ J’ai dissipé tes méfaits comme un brouillard et tes péchés comme un nuage. Reviens à moi, je suis ton libérateur.

23 רׇנּ֨וּ שָׁמַ֜יִם כִּֽי־עָשָׂ֣ה יְהֹוָ֗ה הָרִ֙יעוּ֙ תַּחְתִּיּ֣וֹת אָ֔רֶץ פִּצְח֤וּ הָרִים֙ רִנָּ֔ה יַ֖עַר וְכׇל־עֵ֣ץ בּ֑וֹ כִּֽי־גָאַ֤ל יְהֹוָה֙ יַעֲקֹ֔ב וּבְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יִתְפָּאָֽר׃ {ס} Chantez, cieux, car l’Éternel a agi; résonnez, profondeurs de la terre; éclatez en cris de joie, montagnes et vous, forêts, avec tous vos arbres! Car l’Éternel a délivré Jacob, et il s’est rendu glorieux en Israël.

24 כֹּֽה־אָמַ֤ר יְהֹוָה֙ גֹּאֲלֶ֔ךָ וְיֹצֶרְךָ֖ מִבָּ֑טֶן אָנֹכִ֤י יְהֹוָה֙ עֹ֣שֶׂה כֹּ֔ל נֹטֶ֤ה שָׁמַ֙יִם֙ לְבַדִּ֔י רֹקַ֥ע הָאָ֖רֶץ (מי אתי) [מֵאִתִּֽי]׃ Ainsi parle l’Éternel, ton libérateur, qui t’a formé dès le sein maternel: "Je suis l’Éterne!, L’auteur de toute chose, je déploie les cieux à moi seul, j’étends la terre, et personne ne me seconde.

25 מֵפֵר֙ אֹת֣וֹת בַּדִּ֔ים וְקֹסְמִ֖ים יְהוֹלֵ֑ל מֵשִׁ֧יב חֲכָמִ֛ים אָח֖וֹר וְדַעְתָּ֥ם יְסַכֵּֽל׃ J’annule les présages des diseurs de mensonges, je frappe de démence les devins, force les sages de reculer et fais taxer de folie leur science.

26 מֵקִים֙ דְּבַ֣ר עַבְדּ֔וֹ וַעֲצַ֥ת מַלְאָכָ֖יו יַשְׁלִ֑ים הָאֹמֵ֨ר לִירוּשָׁלַ֜͏ִם תּוּשָׁ֗ב וּלְעָרֵ֤י יְהוּדָה֙ תִּבָּנֶ֔ינָה וְחׇרְבוֹתֶ֖יהָ אֲקוֹמֵֽם׃ J’accomplis la parole de mon serviteur et fais aboutir le dessein de mes mandataires, je dis de Jérusalem "Elle sera habitée!" et des villes de Juda: "Elles seront rebâties, je relèverai leurs ruines!"

27 הָאֹמֵ֥ר לַצּוּלָ֖ה חֳרָ֑בִי וְנַהֲרֹתַ֖יִךְ אוֹבִֽישׁ׃ Je dis aux eaux profondes: "Desséchez-vous!" Je tarirai tes fleuves.

28 הָאֹמֵ֤ר לְכ֙וֹרֶשׁ֙ רֹעִ֔י וְכׇל־חֶפְצִ֖י יַשְׁלִ֑ם וְלֵאמֹ֤ר לִירוּשָׁלַ֙͏ִם֙ תִּבָּנֶ֔ה וְהֵיכָ֖ל תִּוָּסֵֽד׃ {פ}
Je dis à Cyrus: "Tu es mon berger!" Lui, il exécutera ma volonté tout entière quand il dira à Jérusalem: "Sois rebâtie!" et au sanctuaire: "Sois fondé!"

The carpenter And if he comes to make it of wood, and he is a carpenter, the following is his method.

stretched out a line as is the custom of the carpenters, and according to the line, יְתָאֲרֵהוּ בַשֶּׂרֶד, he straightens it with a saw, which they call doloire in French. he beautifies it Heb. יְתָאֲרֵהוּ, he beautifies it.

he fixes it with planes Heb. מַקְצֻעוֹת. He smoothes it with a plane and a blade. Jonathan renders מַקְצֻעוֹת as אִיזְמֵלַיָּא, knives or blades.

and with a compass he rounds it Heb. יְתָאֳרֵהוּ, an expression similar to (Josh. 15:9): “And the border circled (וְתָאַר).” If he comes to make circular drawings, he draws around it with a compass, compas in French.

like the beauty of a man That is a woman, who is the beauty of her husband.

The carpenter, etc. After having mentioned the mason and smith, he speaks of the carpenter.

The carpenter stretches out his rule, etc. This is just the mode of proceeding of those workmen.

יתארהו He forms it or he draws the outlines; comp. ותאר הגבול and the border was drawn (Jos. 15:9).

שרד A kind of drug used for dying. The word is hap. leg. יעשהו He finisheth it.

מקצעות Rulers. This is the opinion of R. Jonah.

מחוגה Compass. Comp. חוג circle (40:22). It is an instrument used for drawing a circle.

According to the beauty of a man, that is, the female, according to the opinion of some ; but I think that it is in reality only a repetition of the preceding idea.

לשבת בית That it may remain in the house. That it be like a man, who dwells in his house.
