Isaïe 53:2

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

53

5 וְהוּא֙ מְחֹלָ֣ל מִפְּשָׁעֵ֔נוּ מְדֻכָּ֖א מֵעֲוֺנֹתֵ֑ינוּ מוּסַ֤ר שְׁלוֹמֵ֙נוּ֙ עָלָ֔יו וּבַחֲבֻרָת֖וֹ נִרְפָּא־לָֽנוּ׃ Et c’est pour nos péchés qu’il a été meurtri, par nos iniquités qu’il a été écrasé; le châtiment, gage de notre salut, pesait sur lui, et c’est sa blessure qui nous a valu la guérison.
12 לָכֵ֞ן אֲחַלֶּק־ל֣וֹ בָרַבִּ֗ים וְאֶת־עֲצוּמִים֮ יְחַלֵּ֣ק שָׁלָל֒ תַּ֗חַת אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֶעֱרָ֤ה לַמָּ֙וֶת֙ נַפְשׁ֔וֹ וְאֶת־פֹּשְׁעִ֖ים נִמְנָ֑ה וְהוּא֙ חֵטְא־רַבִּ֣ים נָשָׂ֔א וְלַפֹּשְׁעִ֖ים יַפְגִּֽיעַ׃ {פ}

Rashi

English

And he came up like a sapling before it This people, before this greatness came to it, was a very humble people, and it came up by itself like a sapling of the saplings of the trees.

and like a root he came up from dry land.

neither form had he in the beginning, nor comeliness.

and we saw him that he had no appearance. Now shall we desire him? And when we saw him from the beginning without an appearance, how could we desire him? Now shall we desire him? This is a question.

Targum Jonathan

English

The righteous shall be great before him, behold, like branches that bud; and like a tree which sends forth its roots by the streams of water, thus shall the generation of the just multiply in the land, which hath need of him. His visage shall not be the visage of a common person, neither his fear the fear of a plebeian; but a holy brightness shall be his brightness, that every one who seeth him shall contemplate him.

Ibn Ezra

English

And he grew up, etc. That Israelite who is the servant of the Lord, or the whole nation of the Israelites, grew up

before him, that is, before the Lord,

as a tender plant—comp., his branches shall spread (Hosea 14:7)—

and as a root out of dry land, that neither produces fruit, nor distinguishes itself by its size.

He hath no form. This expression has the same meaning as the phrase ותארו מבני אדם and his form was marred more than that of the sons of men (52:14).

ולא מראה ולא נחמדהו ═ ולא מראה ונחמדהו there is no beauty, nor do we desire him; the negation לא before מראה, refers also to נחמדהו; comp. Prov. 21:14
