1 רׇנִּ֥י עֲקָרָ֖ה לֹ֣א יָלָ֑דָה פִּצְחִ֨י רִנָּ֤ה וְצַֽהֲלִי֙ לֹא־חָ֔לָה כִּֽי־רַבִּ֧ים בְּֽנֵי־שׁוֹמֵמָ֛ה מִבְּנֵ֥י בְעוּלָ֖ה אָמַ֥ר יְהֹוָֽה׃ Réjouis-toi, femme stérile qui n’as point enfanté! Fais éclater ton allégresse et chante, toi qui n’as pas été en mal d’enfant! Car plus nombreux seront les enfants de la femme délaissée que de la femme mariée, a dit l’Éternel.

2 הַרְחִ֣יבִי ׀ מְק֣וֹם אׇהֳלֵ֗ךְ וִירִיע֧וֹת מִשְׁכְּנוֹתַ֛יִךְ יַטּ֖וּ אַל־תַּחְשֹׂ֑כִי הַאֲרִ֙יכִי֙ מֵיתָרַ֔יִךְ וִיתֵדֹתַ֖יִךְ חַזֵּֽקִי׃ Elargis l’emplacement de ta tente, qu’on déploie les tentures de ta demeure, n’y épargne rien! Allonge tes cordes, fixe solidement tes chevilles!

3 כִּֽי־יָמִ֥ין וּשְׂמֹ֖אול תִּפְרֹ֑צִי וְזַרְעֵךְ֙ גּוֹיִ֣ם יִירָ֔שׁ וְעָרִ֥ים נְשַׁמּ֖וֹת יוֹשִֽׁיבוּ׃ Car de droite et de gauche tu déborderas, et tes enfants recueilleront l’héritage des nations, peupleront des villes devenues solitaires.

4 אַל־תִּֽירְאִי֙ כִּֽי־לֹ֣א תֵב֔וֹשִׁי וְאַל־תִּכָּלְמִ֖י כִּ֣י לֹ֣א תַחְפִּ֑ירִי כִּ֣י בֹ֤שֶׁת עֲלוּמַ֙יִךְ֙ תִּשְׁכָּ֔חִי וְחֶרְפַּ֥ת אַלְמְנוּתַ֖יִךְ לֹ֥א תִזְכְּרִי־עֽוֹד׃ Ne crains pas, car tu ne seras plus humiliée; ne sois pas confuse, car tu ne subiras plus d’outrage; car la honte de ta jeunesse, tu l’oublieras, le déshonneur de ton veuvage, tu ne t’en souviendras plus.

5 כִּ֤י בֹעֲלַ֙יִךְ֙ עֹשַׂ֔יִךְ יְהֹוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת שְׁמ֑וֹ וְגֹֽאֲלֵךְ֙ קְד֣וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֱלֹהֵ֥י כׇל־הָאָ֖רֶץ יִקָּרֵֽא׃ Oui, ton époux ce sera ton Créateur, qui a nom l’Éternel-Cebaot, ton sauveur sera le Saint d’Israël, qui s’appelle le Dieu de toute la terre.

6 כִּֽי־כְאִשָּׁ֧ה עֲזוּבָ֛ה וַעֲצ֥וּבַת ר֖וּחַ קְרָאָ֣ךְ יְהֹוָ֑ה וְאֵ֧שֶׁת נְעוּרִ֛ים כִּ֥י תִמָּאֵ֖ס אָמַ֥ר אֱלֹהָֽיִךְ׃ Car comme une femme abandonnée et au cœur affligé, l’Éternel t’a rappelée; la compagne de la jeunesse peut-elle être un objet de dédain? Ainsi parle le Seigneur.

7 בְּרֶ֥גַע קָטֹ֖ן עֲזַבְתִּ֑יךְ וּבְרַחֲמִ֥ים גְּדֹלִ֖ים אֲקַבְּצֵֽךְ׃ Un court instant je t’ai délaissée, et avec une grande tendresse je veux te recueillir.

8 בְּשֶׁ֣צֶף קֶ֗צֶף הִסְתַּ֨רְתִּי פָנַ֥י רֶ֙גַע֙ מִמֵּ֔ךְ וּבְחֶ֥סֶד עוֹלָ֖ם רִחַמְתִּ֑יךְ אָמַ֥ר גֹּאֲלֵ֖ךְ יְהֹוָֽה׃ {ס} Dans un transport de colère je t’ai, un instant, dérobé ma face; désormais je t’aimerai d’une affection sans bornes, dit ton libérateur, l’Éternel.

9 כִּֽי־מֵ֥י נֹ֙חַ֙ זֹ֣את לִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִשְׁבַּ֗עְתִּי מֵעֲבֹ֥ר מֵי־נֹ֛חַ ע֖וֹד עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ כֵּ֥ן נִשְׁבַּ֛עְתִּי מִקְּצֹ֥ף עָלַ֖יִךְ וּמִגְּעׇר־בָּֽךְ׃ Certes, je ferai en cela comme pour les eaux de Noé: de même que j’ai juré que le déluge de Noé ne désolerait plus la terre, ainsi je jure de ne plus m’irriter ni diriger des menaces contre toi.

10 כִּ֤י הֶהָרִים֙ יָמ֔וּשׁוּ וְהַגְּבָע֖וֹת תְּמוּטֶ֑ינָה וְחַסְדִּ֞י מֵאִתֵּ֣ךְ לֹא־יָמ֗וּשׁ וּבְרִ֤ית שְׁלוֹמִי֙ לֹ֣א תָמ֔וּט אָמַ֥ר מְרַחֲמֵ֖ךְ יְהֹוָֽה׃ {ס} Que les montagnes chancellent, que les collines s’ébranlent, ma tendresse pour toi ne chancellera pas, ni mon alliance de paix ne sera ébranlée, dit Celui qui t’aime, l’Éternel!

11 עֲנִיָּ֥ה סֹעֲרָ֖ה לֹ֣א נֻחָ֑מָה הִנֵּ֨ה אָנֹכִ֜י מַרְבִּ֤יץ בַּפּוּךְ֙ אֲבָנַ֔יִךְ וִֽיסַדְתִּ֖יךְ בַּסַּפִּירִֽים׃ O infortunée, battue par la tempête, privée de consolation! Vois, je cimenterai tes pierres avec le stuc, et je te bâtirai sur le saphir.

12 וְשַׂמְתִּ֤י כַּֽדְכֹד֙ שִׁמְשֹׁתַ֔יִךְ וּשְׁעָרַ֖יִךְ לְאַבְנֵ֣י אֶקְדָּ֑ח וְכׇל־גְּבוּלֵ֖ךְ לְאַבְנֵי־חֵֽפֶץ׃ Je te construirai des créneaux en pur cristal, des portes en escarboucles, et toutes tes barrières seront en pierres précieuses.

13 וְכׇל־בָּנַ֖יִךְ לִמּוּדֵ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה וְרַ֖ב שְׁל֥וֹם בָּנָֽיִךְ׃ Tous tes enfants seront les disciples de l’Éternel; grande sera la concorde de tes enfants.

14 בִּצְדָקָ֖ה תִּכּוֹנָ֑נִי רַחֲקִ֤י מֵעֹ֙שֶׁק֙ כִּי־לֹ֣א תִירָ֔אִי וּמִ֨מְּחִתָּ֔ה כִּ֥י לֹֽא־תִקְרַ֖ב אֵלָֽיִךְ׃ Tu seras affermie par la justice: bannis toute idée d’oppression, car tu n’auras rien à craindre; de terreur, car tu seras garantie contre elle.

15 הֵ֣ן גּ֥וֹר יָג֛וּר אֶ֖פֶס מֵאוֹתִ֑י מִי־גָ֥ר אִתָּ֖ךְ עָלַ֥יִךְ יִפּֽוֹל׃ Que si l’on se mettait contre toi, ce serait sans mon aveu; quiconque se mettra contre toi succombera sur ton sol.

16 (הן) [הִנֵּ֤ה] אָנֹכִי֙ בָּרָ֣אתִי חָרָ֔שׁ נֹפֵ֙חַ֙ בְּאֵ֣שׁ פֶּחָ֔ם וּמוֹצִ֥יא כְלִ֖י לְמַעֲשֵׂ֑הוּ וְאָנֹכִ֛י בָּרָ֥אתִי מַשְׁחִ֖ית לְחַבֵּֽל׃ Certes, c’est moi qui ai créé le forgeron, lequel attise la braise ardente et façonne l’instrument pour l’usage auquel il est destiné; moi aussi j’ai créé le destructeur qui cause des dégâts.

17 כׇּל־כְּלִ֞י יוּצַ֤ר עָלַ֙יִךְ֙ לֹ֣א יִצְלָ֔ח וְכׇל־לָשׁ֛וֹן תָּקוּם־אִתָּ֥ךְ לַמִּשְׁפָּ֖ט תַּרְשִׁ֑יעִי זֹ֡את נַחֲלַת֩ עַבְדֵ֨י יְהֹוָ֧ה וְצִדְקָתָ֛ם מֵאִתִּ֖י נְאֻם־יְהֹוָֽה׃ {ס} Tout instrument forgé contre toi sera impuissant, toute langue qui se dressera contre toi pour t’accuser sera convaincue d’injustice; tel est le partage des serviteurs de l’Éternel, et l’arrêt équitable qu’ils obtiennent de moi, dit l’Éternel.

jasper Heb. כַּדְכֹד, a kind of precious stone.

your windows Jonathan renders: your woodwork, and Menahem associated it with (Dan. 7:10): “ministered to Him (יְשַׁמְּשׁוּנֵהּ).” (Menahem, apparently renders: your utensils, i.e., the vessels that serve you.) And some interpret it as an expression of a sun (שֶׁמֶשׁ), windows through which the sun shines, and they make opposite it a barrier of kinds of colored glass for beauty, and Midrash Psalms interprets שִׁמְשׁוֹתַיִךְ as well as שֶׁמֶשׁ וּמָגֵן (Ps. 84:12) as “the pinnacles of the wall.”

of carbuncle stones Heb. אֶקְדָּח. Jonathan renders: of gomer stones. Gumrin is the Aramaic translation of גֶּחָלִים, coals. He interprets אֶקְדָּח as an expression similar to (supra 50: 11) “who kindle (קֹדְחֵי) fire,” and they are a type of stones that burn like torches and that is the carbuncle (karbokle in O.F.), an expression of a coal. Others interpret it as an expression of a drill, i.e., huge stones of which the entire opening of the doorway is drilled, and the doorposts, the threshold, and the lintel are all hewn from the stone.

Ibn Ezra

English

כדכד Agates. It is hap. leg.; it is the name of a precious stone.

ושמשתיך And thy windows. It is derived from שמש sun. It signifies the apertures, which are closed with glass in stately palaces.

ושעריך And of thy gates. And the windows of thy gates.

אקדח Carbuncles. A precious stone. The א is prosthetic; comp. קדחה is kindled (Deut. 32:22).

To stones that are desired, that are not like those stones which are thrown about, and are of no value.
