Isaïe 6:2

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

6

13 וְע֥וֹד בָּהּ֙ עֲשִׂ֣רִיָּ֔ה וְשָׁ֖בָה וְהָיְתָ֣ה לְבָעֵ֑ר כָּאֵלָ֣ה וְכָאַלּ֗וֹן אֲשֶׁ֤ר בְּשַׁלֶּ֙כֶת֙ מַצֶּ֣בֶת בָּ֔ם זֶ֥רַע קֹ֖דֶשׁ מַצַּבְתָּֽהּ׃ {פ}

Rashi

English

Seraphim stood above in heaven.

for Him i.e., to serve him, and so does Jonathan render: Holy servants are on high before Him.

with two he would cover his face so as not to look toward the Shechinah.

and with two he would cover his feet for modesty, so as not to bare his entire body before his Creator. And in Tanhuma (Emor 8), I saw that the feet were covered because they are like the sole of the foot of a calf, in order not to remind Israel of the sin of the golden calf.

and with two he would fly And with two he would serve [from Targum Jonathan].

Targum Jonathan

English

Holy ministers on high stood before him: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, that it should not see; and with twain he covered his body, that it should not be seen; and with twain he was ministering.

Radak (David Kimhi)

.....

....

...And he called them Seraphim (''angels from root שרף = something to do with burning'') because he saw them in a prophetic vision in the form of fire that consumes and this was (meant) to reveal the rebellious sin of that generation for which they were liable for extermination.
