1 הַדָּבָ֗ר אֲשֶׁ֤ר דִּבֶּר֙ יִרְמְיָ֣הוּ הַנָּבִ֔יא אֶל־בָּר֖וּךְ בֶּן־נֵרִיָּ֑ה בְּכׇתְבוֹ֩ אֶת־הַדְּבָרִ֨ים הָאֵ֤לֶּה עַל־סֵ֙פֶר֙ מִפִּ֣י יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ בַּשָּׁנָה֙ הָרְבִעִ֔ית לִיהוֹיָקִ֧ים בֶּן־יֹאשִׁיָּ֛הוּ מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר׃ Parole adressée par le prophète Jérémie à Baruch, fils de Néria, lorsque ce dernier écrivit ces discours dans un livre sous la dictée de Jérémie, dans la quatrième année du règne de Joïakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda:

2 כֹּה־אָמַ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל עָלֶ֖יךָ בָּרֽוּךְ׃ "Voici ce que l’Éternel, Dieu d’Israël, dit à ton sujet, ô Baruch!

3 אָמַ֙רְתָּ֙ אֽוֹי־נָ֣א לִ֔י כִּֽי־יָסַ֧ף יְהֹוָ֛ה יָג֖וֹן עַל־מַכְאֹבִ֑י יָגַ֙עְתִּי֙ בְּאַנְחָתִ֔י וּמְנוּחָ֖ה לֹ֥א מָצָֽאתִי׃ Tu t’es écrié: Malheur à moi! car l’Éternel a ajouté une [nouvelle] tristesse à ma douleur. Je suis exténué à force de gémir, et ne trouve plus de repos.

4 כֹּ֣ה ׀ תֹּאמַ֣ר אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה הִנֵּ֤ה אֲשֶׁר־בָּנִ֙יתִי֙ אֲנִ֣י הֹרֵ֔ס וְאֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־נָטַ֖עְתִּי אֲנִ֣י נֹתֵ֑שׁ וְאֶת־כׇּל־הָאָ֖רֶץ הִֽיא׃ Voici ce que tu lui diras: L’Éternel a parlé comme suit: Certes ce que j’ai édifié, je vais le démolir; ce que j’ai planté, je vais l’arracher; il en sera ainsi de toute la terre.

5 וְאַתָּ֛ה תְּבַקֶּשׁ־לְךָ֥ גְדֹל֖וֹת אַל־תְּבַקֵּ֑שׁ כִּ֡י הִנְנִי֩ מֵבִ֨יא רָעָ֤ה עַל־כׇּל־בָּשָׂר֙ נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֔ה וְנָתַתִּ֨י לְךָ֤ אֶֽת־נַפְשְׁךָ֙ לְשָׁלָ֔ל עַ֥ל כׇּל־הַמְּקֹמ֖וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר תֵּלֶךְ־שָֽׁם׃ {פ}
Or, toi, tu aspirerais à de grandes choses! N’y aspire point! Car voici, je vais faire fondre le malheur sur toute chair, dit l’Éternel; quant à toi, je t’assurerai la vie sauve dans tous les lieux où tu te rendras."

English

And you seek great things for yourself? [“Great things” means] prophecies. Cf. “Please tell me all the great things etc.” (II Kings 8:4). “Call to me...and I will tell you great, etc,” (above 33:3). The Holy One, blessed be He, said to him: If there is no vineyard, there is no fence, and if there are no sheep, there is no shepherd. I reveal Myself to the prophets only in the merit of Israel. We learned this in the Mechilta, in the beginning.
