1 וַיַּ֥עַן אִיּ֗וֹב וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ Job reprit la parole et dit:

2 עַד־אָ֭נָה תּוֹגְי֣וּן נַפְשִׁ֑י וּֽתְדַכּאוּנַ֥נִי בְמִלִּֽים׃ Jusqu’à quand contristerez-vous mon âme et m’accablerez-vous de vos discours?

3 זֶ֤ה עֶ֣שֶׂר פְּ֭עָמִים תַּכְלִימ֑וּנִי לֹֽא־תֵ֝בֹ֗שׁוּ תַּהְכְּרוּ־לִֽי׃ Voilà dix fois que vous m’injuriez; vous ne rougissez pas de me torturer.

4 וְאַף־אׇמְנָ֥ם שָׁגִ֑יתִי אִ֝תִּ֗י תָּלִ֥ין מְשׁוּגָתִֽי׃ Mais soit! Admettons que j’aie des torts: ces torts ne pèseraient que sur moi.

5 אִם־אׇ֭מְנָם עָלַ֣י תַּגְדִּ֑ילוּ וְתוֹכִ֥יחוּ עָ֝לַ֗י חֶרְפָּתִֽי׃ Quant à vous, si vraiment vous prétendez vous grandir à mes dépens et me reprocher la honte où je suis réduit,

6 דְּֽעוּ־אֵ֭פוֹ כִּֽי־אֱל֣וֹהַּ עִוְּתָ֑נִי וּ֝מְצוּד֗וֹ עָלַ֥י הִקִּֽיף׃ sachez donc que c’est Dieu qui m’a fait un passe-droit, et qui m’a enveloppé de ses embûches.

7 הֵ֤ן אֶצְעַ֣ק חָ֭מָס וְלֹ֣א אֵעָנֶ֑ה אֲ֝שַׁוַּ֗ע וְאֵ֣ין מִשְׁפָּֽט׃ Quoi! Je crie à la violence et ne trouve point d’écho; j’appelle au secours, et de justice point!

8 אׇרְחִ֣י גָ֭דַר וְלֹ֣א אֶעֱב֑וֹר וְעַ֥ל נְ֝תִיבוֹתַ֗י חֹ֣שֶׁךְ יָשִֽׂים׃ Il m’a barré la route, impossible de passer; sur mes sentiers, il a répandu les ténèbres.

9 כְּ֭בוֹדִי מֵעָלַ֣י הִפְשִׁ֑יט וַ֝יָּ֗סַר עֲטֶ֣רֶת רֹאשִֽׁי׃ Il m’a dépouillé de mon honneur; il a enlevé la couronne de ma tête.

10 יִתְּצֵ֣נִי סָ֭בִיב וָאֵלַ֑ךְ וַיַּסַּ֥ע כָּ֝עֵ֗ץ תִּקְוָתִֽי׃ Il m’a démoli de fond en comble, et je me suis écroulé; il a arraché comme un arbre mon espérance.

11 וַיַּ֣חַר עָלַ֣י אַפּ֑וֹ וַיַּחְשְׁבֵ֖נִי ל֣וֹ כְצָרָֽיו׃ Il a enflammé sa colère contre moi; il m’a traité comme ses ennemis.

12 יַ֤חַד ׀ יָ֘בֹ֤אוּ גְדוּדָ֗יו וַיָּסֹ֣לּוּ עָלַ֣י דַּרְכָּ֑ם וַיַּחֲנ֖וּ סָבִ֣יב לְאׇהֳלִֽי׃ Ses hordes arrivent en masse, se fraient un chemin contre moi et mettent le siège autour de ma tente.

13 אַ֭חַי מֵעָלַ֣י הִרְחִ֑יק וְ֝יֹדְעַ֗י אַךְ־זָ֥רוּ מִמֶּֽנִּי׃ Mes frères, il les a éloignés de moi, mes amis ne sont plus que des étrangers pour moi.

14 חָדְל֥וּ קְרוֹבָ֑י וּֽמְיֻדָּעַ֥י שְׁכֵחֽוּנִי׃ Mes proches m’ont délaissé, mes intimes m’ont oublié.

15 גָּ֘רֵ֤י בֵיתִ֣י וְ֭אַמְהֹתַי לְזָ֣ר תַּחְשְׁבֻ֑נִי נׇ֝כְרִ֗י הָיִ֥יתִי בְעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃ Les gens de ma maison, mes propres servantes me considèrent comme un intrus; je suis devenu un inconnu à leurs yeux.

16 לְעַבְדִּ֣י קָ֭רָאתִי וְלֹ֣א יַעֲנֶ֑ה בְּמוֹ־פִ֝֗י אֶתְחַנֶּן־לֽוֹ׃ J’appelle mon serviteur: il ne répond pas; je suis obligé de le supplier de ma bouche.

17 ר֭וּחִי זָ֣רָה לְאִשְׁתִּ֑י וְ֝חַנֹּתִ֗י לִבְנֵ֥י בִטְנִֽי׃ Mon haleine est odieuse à ma femme et mes caresses aux fils de mes entrailles,

18 גַּם־עֲ֭וִילִים מָ֣אֲסוּ בִ֑י אָ֝ק֗וּמָה וַיְדַבְּרוּ־בִֽי׃ Même de jeunes enfants me montrent leur dédain; quand je veux me lever, ils manifestent contre moi.

19 תִּ֭עֲבוּנִי כׇּל־מְתֵ֣י סוֹדִ֑י וְזֶה־אָ֝הַ֗בְתִּי נֶהְפְּכוּ־בִֽי׃ Tous mes fidèles confidents m’ont pris en horreur, et ceux que j’aimais se sont tournés contre moi.

20 בְּעוֹרִ֣י וּ֭בִבְשָׂרִי דָּבְקָ֣ה עַצְמִ֑י וָ֝אֶתְמַלְּטָ֗ה בְּע֣וֹר שִׁנָּֽי׃ Mes os sont collés à ma peau et à ma chair; je n’ai sauvé du désastre que la peau de mes dents.

21 חׇנֻּ֬נִי חׇנֻּ֣נִי אַתֶּ֣ם רֵעָ֑י כִּ֥י יַד־אֱ֝ל֗וֹהַּ נָ֣גְעָה בִּֽי׃ Ah! Pitié, pitié, vous mes amis! Vous voyez que la main de Dieu m’a frappé.

22 לָ֭מָּה תִּרְדְּפֻ֣נִי כְמוֹ־אֵ֑ל וּ֝מִבְּשָׂרִ֗י לֹ֣א תִשְׂבָּֽעוּ׃ Pourquoi me persécutez-vous à l’exemple de Dieu? Pourquoi êtes-vous insatiables de ma chair?

23 מִי־יִתֵּ֣ן אֵ֭פוֹ וְיִכָּתְב֣וּן מִלָּ֑י מִי־יִתֵּ֖ן בַּסֵּ֣פֶר וְיֻחָֽקוּ׃ Plût à Dieu que mes paroles fussent mises par écrit, qu’elles fussent burinées dans le livre!

24 בְּעֵט־בַּרְזֶ֥ל וְעֹפָ֑רֶת לָ֝עַ֗ד בַּצּ֥וּר יֵחָצְבֽוּן׃ Qu’avec un stylet de fer et de plomb, elles fussent gravées pour toujours dans le roc!

25 וַאֲנִ֣י יָ֭דַעְתִּי גֹּ֣אֲלִי חָ֑י וְ֝אַחֲר֗וֹן עַל־עָפָ֥ר יָקֽוּם׃ Je sais bien, moi, que mon sauveur vit, et qu’à la fin il se manifestera sur la terre.

26 וְאַחַ֣ר ע֭וֹרִי נִקְּפוּ־זֹ֑את וּ֝מִבְּשָׂרִ֗י אֶחֱזֶ֥ה אֱלֽוֹהַּ׃ Après que ma peau, que voilà, sera complètement tombée, libéré de ma chair, je verrai Dieu!

27 אֲשֶׁ֤ר אֲנִ֨י ׀ אֶחֱזֶה־לִּ֗י וְעֵינַ֣י רָא֣וּ וְלֹא־זָ֑ר כָּל֖וּ כִלְיֹתַ֣י בְּחֵקִֽי׃ Oui, je le contemplerai moi-même pour mon bien, mes yeux le verront, non ceux d’un autre. Mon cœur se consume d’attente dans mon sein.

28 כִּ֣י תֹ֭אמְרוּ מַה־נִּרְדׇּף־ל֑וֹ וְשֹׁ֥רֶשׁ דָּ֝בָ֗ר נִמְצָא־בִֽי׃ Que si donc vous dites: "Comme nous allons nous acharner contre lui!" le fond du débat tenant à ma personne,

29 גּ֤וּרוּ לָכֶ֨ם ׀ מִפְּנֵי־חֶ֗רֶב כִּֽי־חֵ֭מָה עֲוֺנ֣וֹת חָ֑רֶב לְמַ֖עַן תֵּדְע֣וּן (שדין) [שַׁדּֽוּן]׃ {פ}
eh bien, ayez peur du glaive, car l’emportement dont vous faites preuve est un crime passible du glaive! Ainsi vous apprendrez qu’il y a une justice.

This vexation and persecution that I mentioned, which is to me like one cutting into my skin, like (Isa. 10:34): “And the thickets of the forests shall be cut off (ונקף).”

and from my flesh I see judgments.
