1 וַיַּ֥עַן אֱלִיה֗וּ וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ Elihou reprit et dit:

2 הֲ֭זֹאת חָשַׁ֣בְתָּ לְמִשְׁפָּ֑ט אָ֝מַ֗רְתָּ צִדְקִ֥י מֵאֵֽל׃ Est-ce cela que tu considères comme juste, cela que tu appelles "ta droiture au regard de Dieu,"

3 כִּֽי־תֹ֭אמַר מַה־יִּסְכׇּן־לָ֑ךְ מָה־אֹ֝עִ֗יל מֵחַטָּאתִֽי׃ de dire: "Quel avantage y trouvé-je? Quel profit de plus que si je faisais mal?"

4 אֲ֭נִי אֲשִֽׁיבְךָ֣ מִלִּ֑ין וְֽאֶת־רֵעֶ֥יךָ עִמָּֽךְ׃ Je vais te répondre en quelques mots et à tes amis avec toi.

5 הַבֵּ֣ט שָׁמַ֣יִם וּרְאֵ֑ה וְשׁ֥וּר שְׁ֝חָקִ֗ים גָּבְה֥וּ מִמֶּֽךָּ׃ Regarde le ciel et vois, contemple les nuages au-dessus de toi!

6 אִם־חָ֭טָאתָ מַה־תִּפְעׇל־בּ֑וֹ וְרַבּ֥וּ פְ֝שָׁעֶ֗יךָ מַה־תַּֽעֲשֶׂה־לּֽוֹ׃ Si tu agis mal, quelle est ton action sur Dieu? Si tes péchés sont nombreux, que lui importe?

7 אִם־צָ֭דַקְתָּ מַה־תִּתֶּן־ל֑וֹ א֥וֹ מַה־מִּיָּדְךָ֥ יִקָּֽח׃ Si tu agis bien, que lui donnes-tu? Ou qu’est-ce qu’il accepte de toi?

8 לְאִישׁ־כָּמ֥וֹךָ רִשְׁעֶ֑ךָ וּלְבֶן־אָ֝דָ֗ם צִדְקָתֶֽךָ׃ C’est toi, créature humaine, qu’intéresse ta perversité; c’est à toi, fils d’Adam, qu’importe ta piété.

9 מֵ֭רֹב עֲשׁוּקִ֣ים יַזְעִ֑יקוּ יְשַׁוְּע֖וּ מִזְּר֣וֹעַ רַבִּֽים׃ On se plaint il est vrai de la multitude d’exactions, on crie contre la violence des grands;

10 וְֽלֹא־אָמַ֗ר אַ֭יֵּה אֱל֣וֹהַּ עֹשָׂ֑י נֹתֵ֖ן זְמִר֣וֹת בַּלָּֽיְלָה׃ mais on ne dit pas: "Où est Dieu, mon créateur, qui donne lieu à des chants joyeux pendant la nuit;

11 מַ֭לְּפֵנוּ מִבַּהֲמ֣וֹת אָ֑רֶץ וּמֵע֖וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם יְחַכְּמֵֽנוּ׃ qui nous Instruit de préférence aux animaux de la terre et nous éclaire plutôt que les oiseaux du ciel?"

12 שָׁ֣ם יִ֭צְעֲקוּ וְלֹ֣א יַעֲנֶ֑ה מִ֝פְּנֵ֗י גְּא֣וֹן רָעִֽים׃ Aussi bien, crie-t-on sans trouver d’écho, à cause de l’arrogance des méchants.

13 אַךְ־שָׁ֭וְא לֹא־יִשְׁמַ֥ע ׀ אֵ֑ל וְ֝שַׁדַּ֗י לֹ֣א יְשׁוּרֶֽנָּה׃ Non, Dieu n’écoute pas de vaines doléances, le Tout-Puissant n’y prête nulle attention.

14 אַ֣ף כִּֽי־תֹ֭אמַר לֹ֣א תְשׁוּרֶ֑נּוּ דִּ֥ין לְ֝פָנָ֗יו וּתְח֥וֹלֵֽל לֽוֹ׃ Combien moins encore quand tu dis que tu ne l’aperçois point, que ta cause est par devers lui et que tu es là à l’attendre!

15 וְעַתָּ֗ה כִּי־אַ֭יִן פָּקַ֣ד אַפּ֑וֹ וְלֹֽא־יָדַ֖ע בַּפַּ֣שׁ מְאֹֽד׃ Et maintenant si tu prétends que sa colère ne sévit point, parce qu’il ne se soucie pas sérieusement des crimes qui se commettent,

16 וְ֭אִיּוֹב הֶ֣בֶל יִפְצֶה־פִּ֑יהוּ בִּבְלִי־דַ֝֗עַת מִלִּ֥ין יַכְבִּֽר׃ {פ}
je conclus que Job ouvre la bouche pour des riens, qu’il accumule des paroles manquant de sens.

and He did not know because of the great multiplicity Because of your many sins, the Creator acted as though He did not know them.

of the...multiplicity Heb. בפש, an expression of multiplicity, like (Malachi 3:20), “and be fat (ופשתם),” and like (Jer. 50:11), “as you become fat (תפושו)”; (Lev. 13:51), “that the mark has spread (פשה).”

ועתה כי אין - יש אומרים: כי בפש לשון מנוח,ה והוא חסר נו"ן מן וינפש והעניין בשביל שאין לו דעת לאיוב, פקד אפו ולא ידע, כי מנוחת שכרו רבה. ויש אומרים: בעבור שלא התחוללת לו פקד אפו עליך.

ולא ידע בפש - פירשו בו שהוא מלשון פרה ורבה פושו וסגו וכמוהו. ויצאתם ופשתם והענין שהחריש ולא פקד אפו בדין, וכאילו לא ידע בריבוי דבריך.
