1 הֲלֹֽא־צָבָ֣א לֶֽאֱנ֣וֹשׁ (על) [עֲלֵי־]אָ֑רֶץ וְכִימֵ֖י שָׂכִ֣יר יָמָֽיו׃ Ah! Certes, l’homme sur terre a une corvée de soldat, ses jours sont comme les jours d’un mercenaire.

2 כְּעֶ֥בֶד יִשְׁאַף־צֵ֑ל וּ֝כְשָׂכִ֗יר יְקַוֶּ֥ה פׇעֳלֽוֹ׃ Il est tel qu’un esclave qui aspire à un peu d’ombre, un mercenaire qui attend son salaire.

3 כֵּ֤ן הׇנְחַ֣לְתִּי לִ֭י יַרְחֵי־שָׁ֑וְא וְלֵיל֥וֹת עָ֝מָ֗ל מִנּוּ־לִֽי׃ C’est ainsi que j’ai eu en partage des mois de misère et qu’on m’a compté des nuits de souffrance.

4 אִם־שָׁכַ֗בְתִּי וְאָמַ֗רְתִּי מָתַ֣י אָ֭קוּם וּמִדַּד־עָ֑רֶב וְשָׂבַ֖עְתִּי נְדֻדִ֣ים עֲדֵי־נָֽשֶׁף׃ Lorsque je suis couché et que je dis: "Quand me lèverai-je?" la soirée s’allonge, et je suis rassasié d’insomnies jusqu’à l’aube matinale.

5 לָ֘בַ֤שׁ בְּשָׂרִ֣י רִ֭מָּה (וגיש) [וְג֣וּשׁ] עָפָ֑ר עוֹרִ֥י רָ֝גַ֗ע וַיִּמָּאֵֽס׃ Mon corps est revêtu de vermine et de croûtes terreuses, ma peau est crevassée et se dissout.

6 יָמַ֣י קַ֭לּוּ מִנִּי־אָ֑רֶג וַ֝יִּכְל֗וּ בְּאֶ֣פֶס תִּקְוָֽה׃ Mes jours s’enfuient, plus rapides que la navette, et s’évanouissent sans espoir.

7 זְ֭כֹר כִּי־ר֣וּחַ חַיָּ֑י לֹא־תָשׁ֥וּב עֵ֝ינִ֗י לִרְא֥וֹת טֽוֹב׃ Souviens-toi ô Dieu, que ma vie est un souffle: mon œil ne verra plus le bonheur.

8 לֹא־תְ֭שׁוּרֵנִי עֵ֣ין רֹ֑אִי עֵינֶ֖יךָ בִּ֣י וְאֵינֶֽנִּי׃ Le regard qui m’a aperçu ne se posera plus sur moi tu me fixes de ton regard, et c’en est fait de moi.

9 כָּלָ֣ה עָ֭נָן וַיֵּלַ֑ךְ כֵּ֥ן יוֹרֵ֥ד שְׁ֝א֗וֹל לֹ֣א יַעֲלֶֽה׃ La nuée se dissipe et disparaît; ainsi celui qui descend au Cheol n’en remonte plus.

10 לֹא־יָשׁ֣וּב ע֣וֹד לְבֵית֑וֹ וְלֹא־יַכִּירֶ֖נּוּ ע֣וֹד מְקֹמֽוֹ׃ Il ne retourne plus dans sa maison, et sa demeure ne le reconnaît plus.

11 גַּם־אֲנִי֮ לֹ֤א אֶחֱשׇׂ֫ךְ־פִּ֥י אֲֽ֭דַבְּרָה בְּצַ֣ר רוּחִ֑י אָ֝שִׂ֗יחָה בְּמַ֣ר נַפְשִֽׁי׃ Aussi ne mettrai-je pas de frein à ma bouche: je veux parler dans la détresse de mon esprit, me plaindre dans l’amertume de mon âme.

12 הֲֽיָם־אָ֭נִי אִם־תַּנִּ֑ין כִּֽי־תָשִׂ֖ים עָלַ֣י מִשְׁמָֽר׃ Suis-je donc la mer ou bien un monstre marin, que tu poses une barrière autour de moi?

13 כִּֽי־אָ֭מַרְתִּי תְּנַחֲמֵ֣נִי עַרְשִׂ֑י יִשָּׂ֥א בְ֝שִׂיחִ֗י מִשְׁכָּבִֽי׃ Quand je m’imagine que mon lit me consolera, que ma couche enlèvera quelque peu de ma douleur,

14 וְחִתַּתַּ֥נִי בַחֲלֹמ֑וֹת וּֽמֵחֶזְיֹנ֥וֹת תְּבַעֲתַֽנִּי׃ tu m’effraies par des songes, tu m’épouvantes par des visions,

15 וַתִּבְחַ֣ר מַחֲנָ֣ק נַפְשִׁ֑י מָ֝֗וֶת מֵעַצְמוֹתָֽי׃ de sorte que mon âme souhaite une fin violente, préférant le trépas, à ce corps misérable.

16 מָ֭אַסְתִּי לֹא־לְעֹלָ֣ם אֶחְיֶ֑ה חֲדַ֥ל מִ֝מֶּ֗נִּי כִּי־הֶ֥בֶל יָמָֽי׃ Je suis plein de dégoût: je ne vivrai pas éternellement, donne-moi quelque relâche, car mes jours ne sont qu’un souffle.

17 מָֽה־אֱ֭נוֹשׁ כִּ֣י תְגַדְּלֶ֑נּוּ וְכִֽי־תָשִׁ֖ית אֵלָ֣יו לִבֶּֽךָ׃ Qu’est-ce que le mortel que tu le prises tant et portes ton attention sur lui?

18 וַתִּפְקְדֶ֥נּוּ לִבְקָרִ֑ים לִ֝רְגָעִ֗ים תִּבְחָנֶֽנּוּ׃ Pourquoi lui demander des comptes chaque matin et l’éprouver à tout instant?

19 כַּ֭מָּה לֹא־תִשְׁעֶ֣ה מִמֶּ֑נִּי לֹֽא־תַ֝רְפֵּ֗נִי עַד־בִּלְעִ֥י רֻקִּֽי׃ Jusqu’à quand refuseras-tu de te détourner de moi et de me laisser respirer assez de temps pour avaler ma salive?

20 חָטָ֡אתִי מָ֤ה אֶפְעַ֨ל ׀ לָךְ֮ נֹצֵ֢ר הָ֫אָדָ֥ם לָ֤מָה שַׂמְתַּ֣נִי לְמִפְגָּ֣ע לָ֑ךְ וָאֶהְיֶ֖ה עָלַ֣י לְמַשָּֽׂא׃ Si j’ai failli, qu’ai-je fait contre-toi, ô sévère gardien des hommes? Pourquoi me prendre comme ta cible et faire que je sois à charge à moi-même?

21 וּמֶ֤ה ׀ לֹא־תִשָּׂ֣א פִשְׁעִי֮ וְתַעֲבִ֢יר אֶת־עֲוֺ֫נִ֥י כִּֽי־עַ֭תָּה לֶעָפָ֣ר אֶשְׁכָּ֑ב וְשִׁ֖חַרְתַּ֣נִי וְאֵינֶֽנִּי׃ {פ}
Que ne pardonnes-tu ma faute, que n’effaces-tu mon péché? Bien vite je serais couché dans la poussière: tu me chercherais, et je n’y serais plus.

so that I have become a burden to myself [Etz Chayim ms: Like “and I have become a burden to You.”] This is one of the words in which Scripture euphemized, and they are known as the emendation of the scribes.
