Jonas 4:1

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

4

3 וְעַתָּ֣ה יְהֹוָ֔ה קַח־נָ֥א אֶת־נַפְשִׁ֖י מִמֶּ֑נִּי כִּ֛י ט֥וֹב מוֹתִ֖י מֵחַיָּֽי׃ {פ}
6 וַיְמַ֣ן יְהֹוָֽה־אֱ֠לֹהִ֠ים קִיקָי֞וֹן וַיַּ֣עַל ׀ מֵעַ֣ל לְיוֹנָ֗ה לִֽהְי֥וֹת צֵל֙ עַל־רֹאשׁ֔וֹ לְהַצִּ֥יל ל֖וֹ מֵרָֽעָת֑וֹ וַיִּשְׂמַ֥ח יוֹנָ֛ה עַל־הַקִּֽיקָי֖וֹן שִׂמְחָ֥ה גְדוֹלָֽה׃ Or, le Seigneur Dieu fit pousser un ricin qui s’éleva au-dessus de Jonas pour ombrager sa tête et le consoler de sa douleur.
10 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהֹוָ֔ה אַתָּ֥ה חַ֙סְתָּ֙ עַל־הַקִּ֣יקָי֔וֹן אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹא־עָמַ֥לְתָּ בּ֖וֹ וְלֹ֣א גִדַּלְתּ֑וֹ שֶׁבִּן־לַ֥יְלָה הָיָ֖ה וּבִן־לַ֥יְלָה אָבָֽד׃ L’Éternel répliqua: "Quoi! tu as souci de ce ricin qui ne t’a coûté aucune peine, que tu n’as point fait pousser, qu’une nuit a vu naître, qu’une nuit a vu périr:

Radak (David Kimhi)

English

Displeased: ...How did Jonah know? The forty days had not yet passed. God told him in the spirit of prophecy that He had turned from what He had decreed for them, since they had repented of their evil way.

Abarbanel

English

...Jonah became depressed and wanted to die, because ... while they had repented from their evil ways in beliefs and deeds, he saw that they continued in their idolatry, and did not repent for their sins against God...

Jonah complained silently to God: why did God intend to destroy Israel for its idolatry, but forgave the idolatry of the people of Nineveh? ...

Because all this graciousness and kindness that You do for Nineveh is not out of love for them, nor because it is just, but entirely because You show patience to the Assyrians so that they will come to my land, the Land of Israel, to destroy it...
