1 וְאַתָּ֞ה בֵּֽית־לֶ֣חֶם אֶפְרָ֗תָה צָעִיר֙ לִֽהְיוֹת֙ בְּאַלְפֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה מִמְּךָ֙ לִ֣י יֵצֵ֔א לִֽהְי֥וֹת מוֹשֵׁ֖ל בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וּמוֹצָאֹתָ֥יו מִקֶּ֖דֶם מִימֵ֥י עוֹלָֽם׃ Or, c’est de toi Bethléem-Efrata, si peu importante parmi les groupes de Juda, c’est de toi que je veux que sorte celui qui est destiné à dominer sur Israël et dont l’origine remonte aux temps lointains, aux jours antiques.

2 לָכֵ֣ן יִתְּנֵ֔ם עַד־עֵ֥ת יוֹלֵדָ֖ה יָלָ֑דָה וְיֶ֣תֶר אֶחָ֔יו יְשׁוּב֖וּן עַל־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ C’est pourquoi il les abandonnera [à eux-mêmes] jusqu’au jour où enfantera celle qui doit enfanter, et où le reste de ses frères viendra retrouver les enfants d’Israël.

3 וְעָמַ֗ד וְרָעָה֙ בְּעֹ֣ז יְהֹוָ֔ה בִּגְא֕וֹן שֵׁ֖ם יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָ֑יו וְיָשָׁ֕בוּ כִּֽי־עַתָּ֥ה יִגְדַּ֖ל עַד־אַפְסֵי־אָֽרֶץ׃ Lui se lèvera et conduira [son troupeau], grâce à la puissance du Seigneur et du nom glorieux de l’Éternel, son Dieu; ils demeureront en paix, car dès lors sa grandeur éclatera jusqu’aux confins de la terre.

4 וְהָיָ֥ה זֶ֖ה שָׁל֑וֹם אַשּׁ֣וּר ׀ כִּֽי־יָב֣וֹא בְאַרְצֵ֗נוּ וְכִ֤י יִדְרֹךְ֙ בְּאַרְמְנוֹתֵ֔ינוּ וַהֲקֵמֹ֤נוּ עָלָיו֙ שִׁבְעָ֣ה רֹעִ֔ים וּשְׁמֹנָ֖ה נְסִיכֵ֥י אָדָֽם׃ Alors régnera la paix! Que si Achour envahit notre pays et foule nos palais, nous lui opposerons sept pasteurs et huit conducteurs d’hommes.

5 וְרָע֞וּ אֶת־אֶ֤רֶץ אַשּׁוּר֙ בַּחֶ֔רֶב וְאֶת־אֶ֥רֶץ נִמְרֹ֖ד בִּפְתָחֶ֑יהָ וְהִצִּיל֙ מֵֽאַשּׁ֔וּר כִּֽי־יָב֣וֹא בְאַרְצֵ֔נוּ וְכִ֥י יִדְרֹ֖ךְ בִּגְבוּלֵֽנוּ׃ {פ}
Ceux-ci feront leur pâture du pays d’Achour par l’épée, de la terre de Nemrod dans sa propre enceinte. Ainsi on nous protégera contre Achour s’il envahit notre pays, et s’il met le pied sur notre territoire.

6 וְהָיָ֣ה ׀ שְׁאֵרִ֣ית יַעֲקֹ֗ב בְּקֶ֙רֶב֙ עַמִּ֣ים רַבִּ֔ים כְּטַל֙ מֵאֵ֣ת יְהֹוָ֔ה כִּרְבִיבִ֖ים עֲלֵי־עֵ֑שֶׂב אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־יְקַוֶּה֙ לְאִ֔ישׁ וְלֹ֥א יְיַחֵ֖ל לִבְנֵ֥י אָדָֽם׃ {פ}
Les survivants de Jacob seront au milieu de la foule des peuples comme la rosée que Dieu envoie, comme l’ondée sur l’herbe qui ne comptent pas sur l’homme et n’attendent rien des fils d’Adam.

7 וְהָיָה֩ שְׁאֵרִ֨ית יַעֲקֹ֜ב בַּגּוֹיִ֗ם בְּקֶ֙רֶב֙ עַמִּ֣ים רַבִּ֔ים כְּאַרְיֵה֙ בְּבַהֲמ֣וֹת יַ֔עַר כִּכְפִ֖יר בְּעֶדְרֵי־צֹ֑אן אֲשֶׁ֧ר אִם־עָבַ֛ר וְרָמַ֥ס וְטָרַ֖ף וְאֵ֥ין מַצִּֽיל׃ Les survivants de Jacob seront parmi les peuples, au milieu de la foule des nations, comme le lion parmi les animaux de la forêt, le lionceau parmi les troupeaux de brebis; quand il passe, il foule aux pieds, il déchire, sans que personne porte secours.

8 תָּרֹ֥ם יָדְךָ֖ עַל־צָרֶ֑יךָ וְכׇל־אֹיְבֶ֖יךָ יִכָּרֵֽתוּ׃ Ainsi ta main dominera tes adversaires, et tous tes ennemis seront exterminés.

9 וְהָיָ֤ה בַיּוֹם־הַהוּא֙ נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֔ה וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י סוּסֶ֖יךָ מִקִּרְבֶּ֑ךָ וְהַאֲבַדְתִּ֖י מַרְכְּבֹתֶֽיךָ׃ En ces jours, dit l’Éternel, je ferai disparaître de ton pays ta cavalerie, et je détruirai tes chars [de guerre].

10 וְהִכְרַתִּ֖י עָרֵ֣י אַרְצֶ֑ךָ וְהָרַסְתִּ֖י כׇּל־מִבְצָרֶֽיךָ׃ Je supprimerai de ton pays les villes [fortifiées], et je raserai toutes tes citadelles.

11 וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י כְשָׁפִ֖ים מִיָּדֶ֑ךָ וּֽמְעוֹנְנִ֖ים לֹ֥א יִֽהְיוּ־לָֽךְ׃ J’enlèverai toutes les pratiques de sorcellerie de tes mains, il n’y aura plus de devins chez toi.

12 וְהִכְרַתִּ֧י פְסִילֶ֛יךָ וּמַצֵּבוֹתֶ֖יךָ מִקִּרְבֶּ֑ךָ וְלֹא־תִשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֥ה ע֖וֹד לְמַעֲשֵׂ֥ה יָדֶֽיךָ׃ J’extirperai de ton sein tes images sculptées et tes statues, et tu ne te prosterneras plus devant l’œuvre de tes mains.

13 וְנָתַשְׁתִּ֥י אֲשֵׁירֶ֖יךָ מִקִּרְבֶּ֑ךָ וְהִשְׁמַדְתִּ֖י עָרֶֽיךָ׃ J’arracherai de ton sol les idoles d’Astarté, et je détruirai tes ennemis.

14 וְעָשִׂ֜יתִי בְּאַ֧ף וּבְחֵמָ֛ה נָקָ֖ם אֶת־הַגּוֹיִ֑ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר לֹ֥א שָׁמֵֽעוּ׃ {פ}
Avec colère et emportement, j’exercerai des représailles sur les peuples qui n’auront pas obéi.

Therefore, He shall deliver them until the time a woman in confinement gives birth—He shall deliver them into the hands of their enemies until the coming of the time that Zion has felt the pangs of labor and borne her children; Zion, which is now seized by the pangs of labor, is now called a woman in confinement. [I.e., now the labor pains will cease and the redemption will come about.] But our Sages state that from here we deduce that the son of David will not come until the wicked kingdom spreads over the entire world for nine months (Yoma 10b, Sanh. 98b). But, according to its simple meaning, this is the structure as I explained.

and the rest of his brothers—The brothers of the King Messiah; i.e., the rest of the tribe [of Judah].

shall return upon the children of Israel—Judah and Benjamin shall join the other tribes and become one kingdom, and they shall no longer be divided into two kingdoms.
