1 שִׁ֥יר הַֽמַּעֲל֗וֹת לְדָ֫וִ֥ד יְהֹוָ֤ה ׀ לֹא־גָבַ֣הּ לִ֭בִּי וְלֹא־רָמ֣וּ עֵינַ֑י וְלֹֽא־הִלַּ֓כְתִּי ׀ בִּגְדֹל֖וֹת וּבְנִפְלָא֣וֹת מִמֶּֽנִּי׃ Cantique des degrés. De David. Seigneur, mon cœur n’est pas gonflé d’orgueil, mes yeux ne sont pas altiers. Je ne recherche point de choses trop élevées pour moi, au-dessus de ma portée.

2 אִם־לֹ֤א שִׁוִּ֨יתִי ׀ וְדוֹמַ֗מְתִּי נַ֫פְשִׁ֥י כְּ֭גָמֻל עֲלֵ֣י אִמּ֑וֹ כַּגָּמֻ֖ל עָלַ֣י נַפְשִֽׁי׃ Au contraire, j’ai apaisé et fait taire mon âme; tel un enfant sevré, reposant sur le sein de sa mère, tel un enfant sevré, mon âme est calme en moi.

3 יַחֵ֣ל יִ֭שְׂרָאֵל אֶל־יְהֹוָ֑ה מֵ֝עַתָּ֗ה וְעַד־עוֹלָֽם׃ {פ}
Qu’Israël mette son attente en l’Éternel, désormais et pour l’éternité!

אם, שויתי - כמו נשתוה או שמתי כמו שויתי ה'.

ודוממתי - מגזרת דומם או מן דמיון.

וטעם כגמול – בעבור שהזכיר ולא הלכתי והנה הגמול אין לו כח להלוך אם לא ישען על אמו כי מיד יפול, והנה כגמול עלי נפשי הטעם כפול.

ומלת עלי – כמו בעיני. ויש אומרים: כי הוא דרך תפלה כי לא חשבתי בלבי לבקש סודות ונפלאות ממני, רק אם לא שויתי נפשי כגמול עלי אמו - כגמול עלי תהיה נפשי, על דרך: תדבק לשוני לחכי אם לא אזכרכי. ואמר דוד הנה אני כל מבטחי בשם וככה עשה ישראל.

אם לא. מנהג הלשון אם לא כענין אלה ושבועה כלומר אם לא היה כך יהיה כך וכך אמר אם לא שויתי ודוממתי נפשי כרגמול יבא לי כך וכך: ופי' שויתי ודוממתי שמתי אותי:

כגמול עלי אמו. כמו התינוק שיגמול משדי אמו שיתחיל מעט להתבונן בענין גדולו ומהלך מעט מעט ועדיין אינו נסמך על עצמו אלא עי אמו שתדדהו ותרגילהו מעט כן שמתי נפשי והשתקתי אותה שלא תסמוך עלי אלא עלי אמו בתכונת עצמו בנסתרות ובנפלאות אלא תסמוך על המלמדים ועל הקבלה שהיא האם: והוסיף עוד לחזק הענין ואמר:

כגמול עלי נפשי. כמו הגמול כן שמתי נפשי עלי שלא אסמוך בבינתי:
