Ecclésiaste 12:5

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

12

1 וּזְכֹר֙ אֶת־בּ֣וֹרְאֶ֔יךָ בִּימֵ֖י בְּחוּרֹתֶ֑יךָ עַ֣ד אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹא־יָבֹ֙אוּ֙ יְמֵ֣י הָֽרָעָ֔ה וְהִגִּ֣יעוּ שָׁנִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֹּאמַ֔ר אֵֽין־לִ֥י בָהֶ֖ם חֵֽפֶץ׃ Surtout souviens-toi de ton Créateur aux jours de ta jeunesse, avant qu’arrivent les mauvais jours et que surviennent les années dont tu diras: "Elles n’ont pas d’agrément pour moi";
3 בַּיּ֗וֹם שֶׁיָּזֻ֙עוּ֙ שֹׁמְרֵ֣י הַבַּ֔יִת וְהִֽתְעַוְּת֖וּ אַנְשֵׁ֣י הֶחָ֑יִל וּבָטְל֤וּ הַטֹּֽחֲנוֹת֙ כִּ֣י מִעֵ֔טוּ וְחָשְׁכ֥וּ הָרֹא֖וֹת בָּאֲרֻבּֽוֹת׃ C’est le moment où fléchissent les gardiens de la maison, où se tordent les lutteurs vigoureux, où les meunières, devenues rares, restent oisives, et où celles qui regardent par les lucarnes voient trouble;
4 וְסֻגְּר֤וּ דְלָתַ֙יִם֙ בַּשּׁ֔וּק בִּשְׁפַ֖ל ק֣וֹל הַֽטַּחֲנָ֑ה וְיָקוּם֙ לְק֣וֹל הַצִּפּ֔וֹר וְיִשַּׁ֖חוּ כׇּל־בְּנ֥וֹת הַשִּֽׁיר׃ où les portes, ouvrant sur le dehors, se ferment, tandis que s’affaiblit le bruit du moulin, devenu semblable à la voix d’un passereau, et où s’éteignent toutes les modulations du chant;
5 גַּ֣ם מִגָּבֹ֤הַּ יִרָ֙אוּ֙ וְחַתְחַתִּ֣ים בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ וְיָנֵ֤אץ הַשָּׁקֵד֙ וְיִסְתַּבֵּ֣ל הֶֽחָגָ֔ב וְתָפֵ֖ר הָֽאֲבִיּוֹנָ֑ה כִּֽי־הֹלֵ֤ךְ הָאָדָם֙ אֶל־בֵּ֣ית עוֹלָמ֔וֹ וְסָבְב֥וּ בַשּׁ֖וּק הַסּוֹפְדִֽים׃ où l’on s’effraie de toute montée, où la route est pleine d’alarmes, où l’amandier fleurit, où une sauterelle paraît un pesant fardeau, et où les câpres demeurent impuissantes, car déjà l’homme se dirige vers sa demeure éternelle, et les pleureurs rôdent sur la place.
6 עַ֣ד אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־[יֵרָתֵק֙] (ירחק) חֶ֣בֶל הַכֶּ֔סֶף וְתָר֖וּץ גֻּלַּ֣ת הַזָּהָ֑ב וְתִשָּׁ֤בֶר כַּד֙ עַל־הַמַּבּ֔וּעַ וְנָרֹ֥ץ הַגַּלְגַּ֖ל אֶל־הַבּֽוֹר׃ [N’attends pas] que se rompe la corde d’argent, que se brise la boule d’or, que le seau soit mis en pièces près de la fontaine et que la poulie fracassée roule dans la citerne;
7 וְיָשֹׁ֧ב הֶעָפָ֛ר עַל־הָאָ֖רֶץ כְּשֶׁהָיָ֑ה וְהָר֣וּחַ תָּשׁ֔וּב אֶל־הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר נְתָנָֽהּ׃ que la poussière retourne à la poussière, redevenant ce qu’elle était, et que l’esprit remonte à Dieu qui l’a donné.
12 וְיֹתֵ֥ר מֵהֵ֖מָּה בְּנִ֣י הִזָּהֵ֑ר עֲשׂ֨וֹת סְפָרִ֤ים הַרְבֵּה֙ אֵ֣ין קֵ֔ץ וְלַ֥הַג הַרְבֵּ֖ה יְגִעַ֥ת בָּשָֽׂר׃ Mais, mon fils, sois bien en garde contre ce qui viendrait s’y ajouter: on fait des livres en quantité, à ne pas finir; or, beaucoup méditer, c’est se fatiguer le corps.

Also, of ascents [and descents in the road] will they be frightened, and [they will suffer many] fears on the road. And his [(the old man's)] coccyx will jut, and his genitals will be a burden to him, and his desire [for women] will cease. For man goes to his eternal home, and mourners go round the marketplace.

Rashi

English

Also when they will fear heights. From the mounds and bumps in the streets; [i.e.,] he is afraid to go outdoors because he might stumble on them.

And terrors on the road. The road’s many fears and terrors.

Terrors. This is a word is of a doubled language, as in

[And the almond tree] will blossom. וְיָנֵאץ is] an expression of, “the pomegranates have blossomed הֵנֵצוּ,” for the ‘aleph’ in it is silent. Our Rabbis said, this is the haunch, hanche in O.F., into which the hip bone is thrust, and in his old age, the flesh becomes thin and the bone protrudes, like when a tree blossoms, it protrudes.

The almond tree. An almond tree, i.e., old age will spring upon him just like this almond tree, which hastens to blossom before all the other trees.

And the grasshopper will be a burden. These are the buttocks, for his buttocks will seem to him to be as one who bears a heavy burden.

Will be a burden. Ed ert sorfeisiez in O.F.

And the desire will fail. The desire for women; for he will have no need to be intimate with women. ‘אֲבִיּוֹנָה’ [means] desire, as in, “But you did not desire אֲבִיתֶם,” [and as in,] “I yearned תָּאַבְתִּי for Your salvation.”
