Jonas 3:8

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

3

Qui sait? Peut-être Dieu, se ravisant, révoquera-t-il son arrêt et se départira-t-il de son courroux, pour que nous ne périssions pas."

Ibn Ezra

English

"And they shall cover themselves," "and they shall call out [to God]"- [The king's proclamation said:] "Any man who is a knowledgeable person, or someone who knows they have done evil," or [the decree was saying] like [that which it says when Avraham entreated God regarding Sodom] "Perhaps [there are ten good men to be found there?]" (Bereshit 18:32).

And the word "and he will return" is [going] on the glorious name [of God].

Radak (David Kimhi)

English

"And they shall cover themselves...with strength"- [cry out] with all one's heart].

"From his evil way"- [this is referring to] other transgressions.

"And from the treachery"- It is [considered equal] opposite all of them and on it was their decree decreed.

Abarbanel

English

The king decreed that it was not enough that the people just fast and wear sackcloth, but that along with this they should also "cry mightily to God" and "turn back from the violence of their hands," which was the main point.
