Aliya 1

L’Éternel parla ainsi à Moïse:
4 וְאֵ֖לֶּה שְׁמוֹתָ֑ם לְמַטֵּ֣ה רְאוּבֵ֔ן שַׁמּ֖וּעַ בֶּן־זַכּֽוּר׃ Et voici leurs noms: pour la tribu de Ruben, Chammoûa, fils de Zakkour;
5 לְמַטֵּ֣ה שִׁמְע֔וֹן שָׁפָ֖ט בֶּן־חוֹרִֽי׃ pour la tribu de Siméon, Chafat, fils de Hori;
6 לְמַטֵּ֣ה יְהוּדָ֔ה כָּלֵ֖ב בֶּן־יְפֻנֶּֽה׃ pour la tribu de Juda, Caleb, fils de Yefounné;
7 לְמַטֵּ֣ה יִשָּׂשכָ֔ר יִגְאָ֖ל בֶּן־יוֹסֵֽף׃ pour la tribu d’Issachar, Yigal, fils de Joseph;
8 לְמַטֵּ֥ה אֶפְרָ֖יִם הוֹשֵׁ֥עַ בִּן־נֽוּן׃ pour la tribu d’Ephraïm, Hochéa, fils de Noun;
9 לְמַטֵּ֣ה בִנְיָמִ֔ן פַּלְטִ֖י בֶּן־רָפֽוּא׃ pour la tribu de Benjamin, Palti, fils de Rafou;
10 לְמַטֵּ֣ה זְבוּלֻ֔ן גַּדִּיאֵ֖ל בֶּן־סוֹדִֽי׃ pour la tribu de Zabulon, Gaddïel, fils de Sodi;
11 לְמַטֵּ֥ה יוֹסֵ֖ף לְמַטֵּ֣ה מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה גַּדִּ֖י בֶּן־סוּסִֽי׃ pour la tribu de Joseph formant celle de Manassé, Gaddi, fils de Çouci;
12 לְמַטֵּ֣ה דָ֔ן עַמִּיאֵ֖ל בֶּן־גְּמַלִּֽי׃ pour la tribu de Dan, Ammïel, fils de Ghemalli;
13 לְמַטֵּ֣ה אָשֵׁ֔ר סְת֖וּר בֶּן־מִיכָאֵֽל׃ pour la tribu d’Asher, Sethour, fils de Mikhaêl;
14 לְמַטֵּ֣ה נַפְתָּלִ֔י נַחְבִּ֖י בֶּן־וׇפְסִֽי׃ pour la tribu de Nephtali, Nahbi, fils de Vofsi;
18 וּרְאִיתֶ֥ם אֶת־הָאָ֖רֶץ מַה־הִ֑וא וְאֶת־הָעָם֙ הַיֹּשֵׁ֣ב עָלֶ֔יהָ הֶחָזָ֥ק הוּא֙ הֲרָפֶ֔ה הַמְעַ֥ט ה֖וּא אִם־רָֽב׃ Vous observerez l’aspect de ce pays et le peuple qui l’occupe, s’il est robuste ou faible, peu nombreux ou considérable;
19 וּמָ֣ה הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־הוּא֙ יֹשֵׁ֣ב בָּ֔הּ הֲטוֹבָ֥ה הִ֖וא אִם־רָעָ֑ה וּמָ֣ה הֶֽעָרִ֗ים אֲשֶׁר־הוּא֙ יוֹשֵׁ֣ב בָּהֵ֔נָּה הַבְּמַֽחֲנִ֖ים אִ֥ם בְּמִבְצָרִֽים׃ quant au pays qu’il habite, s’il est bon ou mauvais; comment sont les villes où il demeure, des villes ouvertes ou des places fortes;

Rashbam

English

מן הנפילים, the original ones of which the Torah had written that they lived in antediluvian times (Genesis 6,4)

כחגבים, anything low considers itself as like a grasshopper when compared to something much taller. We find proof of this in Isaiah 40,22 היושב על חוג הארץ ויושביה כחגבים, “compared to the One Who is enthroned above the vault of the earth views its inhabitants as if they were grasshopper.”

Sforno

English

בני ענק, descended paternally from giants

מן הנפילים, maternally descended from those giants.

וכן היינו בעיניהם, like grasshoppers, or even less significant. They did not bother to harm us as they did not think we represented a threat to them.
