1 תְּפִלָּ֗ה לְדָ֫וִ֥ד שִׁמְעָ֤ה יְהֹוָ֨ה ׀ צֶ֗דֶק הַקְשִׁ֥יבָה רִנָּתִ֗י הַאֲזִ֥ינָה תְפִלָּתִ֑י בְּ֝לֹ֗א שִׂפְתֵ֥י מִרְמָֽה׃ Prière de David. Écoute, ô Seigneur, ma juste demande, exauce ma supplication, prête l’oreille à ma prière, sortant de lèvres non trompeuses.

2 מִ֭לְּפָנֶיךָ מִשְׁפָּטִ֣י יֵצֵ֑א עֵ֝ינֶ֗יךָ תֶּחֱזֶ֥ינָה מֵישָׁרִֽים׃ C’est de toi qu’émanera mon bon droit: tes yeux discernent ce qui est équitable.

3 בָּ֘חַ֤נְתָּ לִבִּ֨י ׀ פָּ֘קַ֤דְתָּ לַּ֗יְלָה צְרַפְתַּ֥נִי בַל־תִּמְצָ֑א זַ֝מֹּתִ֗י בַּל־יַעֲבׇר־פִּֽי׃ Tu sondes mon cœur, tu m’examines pendant la nuit, tu me mets à l’épreuve, sans trouver en moi aucune pensée qui ne doive passer par ma bouche.

4 לִפְעֻלּ֣וֹת אָ֭דָם בִּדְבַ֣ר שְׂפָתֶ֑יךָ אֲנִ֥י שָׁ֝מַ֗רְתִּי אׇרְח֥וֹת פָּרִֽיץ׃ Guidé par les paroles de tes lèvres, j’observe les actions des hommes, les voies des gens violents.

5 תָּמֹ֣ךְ אֲ֭שֻׁרַי בְּמַעְגְּלוֹתֶ֑יךָ בַּל־נָמ֥וֹטּוּ פְעָמָֽי׃ Affermis mes pas dans tes sentiers, pour que mes pieds ne glissent point.

6 אֲנִֽי־קְרָאתִ֣יךָ כִֽי־תַעֲנֵ֣נִי אֵ֑ל הַֽט־אׇזְנְךָ֥ לִ֝֗י שְׁמַ֣ע אִמְרָתִֽי׃ Je t’appelle, car tu me réponds, ô Dieu! Prête-moi l’oreille, entends mes paroles.

7 הַפְלֵ֣ה חֲ֭סָדֶיךָ מוֹשִׁ֣יעַ חוֹסִ֑ים מִ֝מִּתְקוֹמְמִ֗ים בִּֽימִינֶֽךָ׃ Mets en relief tes bienfaits, ô Protecteur de ceux qui se confient à ta droite, malgré les adversaires.

8 שׇׁ֭מְרֵנִי כְּאִישׁ֣וֹן בַּת־עָ֑יִן בְּצֵ֥ל כְּ֝נָפֶ֗יךָ תַּסְתִּירֵֽנִי׃ Garde-moi comme la prunelle des yeux, abrite-moi à l’ombre de tes ailes,

9 מִפְּנֵ֣י רְ֭שָׁעִים ז֣וּ שַׁדּ֑וּנִי אֹיְבַ֥י בְּ֝נֶ֗פֶשׁ יַקִּ֥יפוּ עָלָֽי׃ contre les méchants qui me tyrannisent, contre mes ennemis qui me cernent avec passion.

10 חֶלְבָּ֥מוֹ סָּגְר֑וּ פִּ֝֗ימוֹ דִּבְּר֥וּ בְגֵאֽוּת׃ De leur graisse ils ont bouché [leur cœur]; leurs lèvres s’expriment avec orgueil.

11 אַ֭שֻּׁרֵינוּ עַתָּ֣ה (סבבוני) [סְבָב֑וּנוּ] עֵינֵיהֶ֥ם יָ֝שִׁ֗יתוּ לִנְט֥וֹת בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ A chacun de nos pas, les voilà qui se pressent autour de nous; ils ont les yeux sur nous pour [nous] étendre à terre,

12 דִּמְיֹנ֗וֹ כְּ֭אַרְיֵה יִכְס֣וֹף לִטְרֹ֑ף וְ֝כִכְפִ֗יר יֹשֵׁ֥ב בְּמִסְתָּרִֽים׃ pareils au lion avide de déchirer, au lionceau qui se tient en embuscade.

13 קוּמָ֤ה יְהֹוָ֗ה קַדְּמָ֣ה פָ֭נָיו הַכְרִיעֵ֑הוּ פַּלְּטָ֥ה נַ֝פְשִׁ֗י מֵרָשָׁ֥ע חַרְבֶּֽךָ׃ Lève-toi, Seigneur, préviens ses desseins, fais-lui ployer le genou; par ton glaive, sauve ma vie du méchant.

14 מִ֥מְתִֽים־יָדְךָ֨ ׀ יְהֹוָ֡ה מִֽמְתִ֬ים מֵחֶ֗לֶד חֶלְקָ֥ם בַּֽחַיִּים֮ (וצפינך) [וּֽצְפוּנְךָ֮] תְּמַלֵּ֢א בִ֫טְנָ֥ם יִשְׂבְּע֥וּ בָנִ֑ים וְהִנִּ֥יחוּ יִ֝תְרָ֗ם לְעוֹלְלֵיהֶֽם׃ Par ta main, ô Éternel, [sauve-moi] de ces gens, de ces gens esclaves du monde, qui jouissent largement de la vie, dont tu bourres le ventre de tes biens, dont les enfants ont tout en abondance et laissent leur superflu à leur progéniture.

15 אֲנִ֗י בְּ֭צֶדֶק אֶחֱזֶ֣ה פָנֶ֑יךָ אֶשְׂבְּעָ֥ה בְ֝הָקִ֗יץ תְּמוּנָתֶֽךָ׃ {פ}
Quant à moi, puissé-je, grâce à ma droiture, contempler ta face et, à mon réveil, me rassasier de ta vue!

In other editions, this is one interpretation: I will be satisfied with Your image upon the awakening I will be satisfied with the vision of Your image when the dead awaken from their sleep. As for me, I shall behold Thy face in righteousness: – says David. The wicked have no delight in the world to come, but it is not so with me, for I am looking forward to and hoping to see Thy face in the world to come; and when he says As for me, in righteousness, (he means) for I am looking forward to and hoping to see Thy face in the world to come in (reward for the) righteousness I do in this world in not eating and living in luxury as they do.

I shall be satisfied: – He says, I shall be satisfied, balancing Their children are satisfied: they shall be satisfied in this world, while I shall be satisfied in the world to come.

On awaking: – for my soul shall not die and sleep; the opposite of “they shall sleep a perpetual sleep” (Jer. 51:39, 57).

(with.) Thy likeness: – as “and the likeness of the Lord shall he behold” (Num. 12:8), which is the same as saying, “the likeness of the Lord he has seen.” (What is meant) is mental apprehension of the glory of God according to the soul's capacity after its separation from the body. Moses our teacher (upon him be peace!) experienced this during the lifetime of the body, which was not the case as regards the rest of the Prophets; for his intelligence was active, while all the functions of the body were suspended – “he did neither eat bread nor drink water” (Exod. 34:28) and then the face of the Lord did he behold. This was not so with Elijah, when it is related of him that“ in the strength of that meat,” as we have interpreted in Kings (1. 19:8). And as regards the rest of the Prophets, this (experience) will be theirs after death. The learned Rabbi Abraham ben Ezra has expounded this verse of this world, and he expounds it thus: “I delight to behold Thy face, for the righteousness which I have observed has become the cause of the delight I feel in seeing Thy face. The sense (of the phrase) is the recognition and contemplation of the works of God that they in general are wrought in wisdom and endure for ever. I then am satisfied with the enjoyment of Thy likeness” being in this unlike the wicked men of the world, who are satisfied “when Thou fillest their belly; and this is not in dream, but only when I am awake. And this beholding is not in visions of the eye, but only in visions of the mind, which are visions of God in truth.”
