English · Metsudah Chumash, Metsudah Publications, 2009

And that prophet or that dreamer of a dream is to be executed, for he has uttered a fabrication about Adonoy, your God—Who took you out of the land of Egypt, and Who redeemed you from the house of bondage—to mislead you from the way that Adonoy, your God, commanded you to go upon, and you will eliminate the evil from within you.

And that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death. For of what is "removed" [from the world, it never having been created, and His never having been commanded by Me to speak thus] has he spoken of the L-rd your G-d — who took you out of the land of Egypt, and who redeemed you from the house of bondage. [Had He done only that, it should have been sufficient!] — to turn you from the way on which the L-rd your G-d commanded you to go. And you shall remove the evil from your midst.

And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken perversion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of bondage, to draw thee aside out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee.

Targum Jonathan

English

And that prophet of lies, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be slain with the sword, because he had spoken perversity against the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of the Mizraee, and redeemed you from the house of the affliction of slaves to make you to go astray from the path which the Lord your God hath commanded you to walk in: so shall you bring down the doers of evil among you.

Ibn Ezra

English

he spoke rebellious i.e., he spoke rebellious words. Compare, “in the multitude of counsellors, [counsel] is established” [Proverbs 15: 22].

The derivation of the Hebrew word rebellious [Hebrew: sarah] could be that he turned away [Hebrew: sarah] from God Who commanded us to turn away from idol-worship, or it comes from “insubordinate [Hebrew: sorer] and rebellious” [21: 18] — and the latter etymology is correct (it would thus be appropriate for the resh to be vocalized with a dagesh). ...

Scripture repeats the sense of Who brought you out in redeemed you, for the sake of emphasis. ...

I have already explained the word you must remove [comment on Numbers 24: 22].

Sforno

English

'יומת, כי דבר סרה על ה, even though he had claimed to speak in the name of the Lord and not in the name of some other deity, something which had convinced him that his crime was not subject to the death penalty. We encounter such a scenario in Jeremiah 26,16 where the elders of Jerusalem do not want to convict Jeremiah to the death penalty because he had spoken in the name of the Almighty G’d, i.e. had not denied His sovereignty, although he was perceived as a false prophet, no one accepting his predictions of doom and his call to repentance.

להדיחך מן הדרך, even though he had never asked you to abandon G’d, and had only presented an “updated” version of this same G’d’s commandments. He had, however, asked you to depart from “timeless Torah,” making G’d’s laws something that could be changed from time to time, thus making Moses the father figure of all prophets irrelevant. [my words. Ed.]
