Deutéronome 19:1

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

19

6 פֶּן־יִרְדֹּף֩ גֹּאֵ֨ל הַדָּ֜ם אַחֲרֵ֣י הָרֹצֵ֗חַ כִּי־יֵחַם֮ לְבָבוֹ֒ וְהִשִּׂיג֛וֹ כִּֽי־יִרְבֶּ֥ה הַדֶּ֖רֶךְ וְהִכָּ֣הוּ נָ֑פֶשׁ וְלוֹ֙ אֵ֣ין מִשְׁפַּט־מָ֔וֶת כִּ֠י לֹ֣א שֹׂנֵ֥א ה֛וּא ל֖וֹ מִתְּמ֥וֹל שִׁלְשֽׁוֹם׃ Autrement, le vengeur du sang pourrait, dans l’effervescence de son cœur, courir sus au meurtrier, l’atteindre si le chemin était long, et lui porter un coup mortel; et cependant, il ne méritait point la mort, puisqu’il ne haïssait pas l’autre antérieurement.
9 כִּֽי־תִשְׁמֹר֩ אֶת־כׇּל־הַמִּצְוָ֨ה הַזֹּ֜את לַעֲשֹׂתָ֗הּ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָנֹכִ֣י מְצַוְּךָ֮ הַיּוֹם֒ לְאַהֲבָ֞ה אֶת־יְהֹוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ וְלָלֶ֥כֶת בִּדְרָכָ֖יו כׇּל־הַיָּמִ֑ים וְיָסַפְתָּ֨ לְךָ֥ עוֹד֙ שָׁלֹ֣שׁ עָרִ֔ים עַ֖ל הַשָּׁלֹ֥שׁ הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ à condition que tu t’appliques à accomplir toute cette loi que je t’impose en ce jour, d’aimer l’Éternel, ton Dieu, et de marcher constamment dans ses voies, alors tu ajouteras encore trois villes à ces trois-là;
10 וְלֹ֤א יִשָּׁפֵךְ֙ דָּ֣ם נָקִ֔י בְּקֶ֣רֶב אַרְצְךָ֔ אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לְךָ֖ נַחֲלָ֑ה וְהָיָ֥ה עָלֶ֖יךָ דָּמִֽים׃ {פ}

Ramban (Nachmanides)

English

WHEN THE ETERNAL THY G-D SHALL CUT OFF THE NATIONS etc. 2. THOU SHALT SEPARATE THREE CITIES FOR THEE. This also is an explanatory commandment, since He has already commanded thereon, and now he went on to explain the ordinances thereof, saying and dwell in their cities, and in their houses, teaching that they are not obligated [to set aside the cities of refuge] until after taking possession of the Land and dwelling in it. And so Joshua did. He also added here, Thou shalt prepare thee the way, meaning that the roads leading thereto should be direct [without being unnecessarily circumflex], and that [signs reading] “Refuge, Refuge” be set up at the crossroads. So also he added and thou shalt divide the territory of thy Land into three parts [meaning, that the cities shall be equidistant from the frontier and from each other]. And he also went on to teach us [the rules of] the matter of “error” [which require the unintentional murderer to seek refuge] as he said, And when a man goeth into the forest with his neighbor etc. Our Rabbis have based many more interpretations on this section.
