Aliya 7

1 כִּ֤י יְבִֽיאֲךָ֙ יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ אֶל־הָאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־אַתָּ֥ה בָא־שָׁ֖מָּה לְרִשְׁתָּ֑הּ וְנָשַׁ֣ל גּֽוֹיִם־רַבִּ֣ים ׀ מִפָּנֶ֡יךָ הַֽחִתִּי֩ וְהַגִּרְגָּשִׁ֨י וְהָאֱמֹרִ֜י וְהַכְּנַעֲנִ֣י וְהַפְּרִזִּ֗י וְהַֽחִוִּי֙ וְהַיְבוּסִ֔י שִׁבְעָ֣ה גוֹיִ֔ם רַבִּ֥ים וַעֲצוּמִ֖ים מִמֶּֽךָּ׃ Lorsque l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’aura fait entrer dans le pays où tu te rends pour le conquérir; quand il aura écarté de devant toi ces nombreuses peuplades, le Héthéen, le Ghirgachéen, l’Amorréen, le Cananéen, le Phérézéen, le Hévéen et le Jébuséen, sept peuplades plus nombreuses et plus puissantes que toi;
Ne t’allie avec aucun d’eux: ta fille, ne la donne pas à son fils, et sa fille, n’en fais pas l’épouse du tien!
6 כִּ֣י עַ֤ם קָדוֹשׁ֙ אַתָּ֔ה לַיהֹוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ בְּךָ֞ בָּחַ֣ר ׀ יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ לִהְי֥וֹת לוֹ֙ לְעַ֣ם סְגֻלָּ֔ה מִכֹּל֙ הָֽעַמִּ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ Car tu es un peuple consacré à l’Éternel, ton Dieu: il t’a choisi, l’Éternel, ton Dieu, pour lui être un peuple spécial entre tous les peuples qui sont sur la face de la terre.
7 לֹ֣א מֵֽרֻבְּכֶ֞ם מִכׇּל־הָֽעַמִּ֗ים חָשַׁ֧ק יְהֹוָ֛ה בָּכֶ֖ם וַיִּבְחַ֣ר בָּכֶ֑ם כִּֽי־אַתֶּ֥ם הַמְעַ֖ט מִכׇּל־הָעַמִּֽים׃ Si l’Éternel vous a préférés, vous a distingués, ce n’est pas que vous soyez plus nombreux que les autres peuples, car vous êtes le moindre de tous;
8 כִּי֩ מֵאַהֲבַ֨ת יְהֹוָ֜ה אֶתְכֶ֗ם וּמִשׇּׁמְר֤וֹ אֶת־הַשְּׁבֻעָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר נִשְׁבַּע֙ לַאֲבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם הוֹצִ֧יא יְהֹוָ֛ה אֶתְכֶ֖ם בְּיָ֣ד חֲזָקָ֑ה וַֽיִּפְדְּךָ֙ מִבֵּ֣ית עֲבָדִ֔ים מִיַּ֖ד פַּרְעֹ֥ה מֶֽלֶךְ־מִצְרָֽיִם׃ c’est parce que l’Éternel vous aime, parce qu’il est fidèle au serment qu’il a fait à vos aïeux; voilà pourquoi il vous a, d’un bras puissant, arrachés et sauvés de la maison de servitude, de la main de Pharaon, roi d’Égypte.
9 וְיָ֣דַעְתָּ֔ כִּֽי־יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ ה֣וּא הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים הָאֵל֙ הַֽנֶּאֱמָ֔ן שֹׁמֵ֧ר הַבְּרִ֣ית וְהַחֶ֗סֶד לְאֹהֲבָ֛יו וּלְשֹׁמְרֵ֥י מִצְוֺתָ֖ו לְאֶ֥לֶף דּֽוֹר׃ Reconnais donc que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, lui seul est Dieu, un Dieu véridique, fidèle au pacte de bienveillance pour ceux qui l’aiment et obéissent à ses lois, jusqu’à la millième génération;
11 וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֨ אֶת־הַמִּצְוָ֜ה וְאֶת־הַֽחֻקִּ֣ים וְאֶת־הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָנֹכִ֧י מְצַוְּךָ֛ הַיּ֖וֹם לַעֲשׂוֹתָֽם׃ {פ}

But the Lord your God will make these nations depart from before thee by little and little. You may not destroy them at once, lest the beasts of the field multiply against you, when they have come to devour their carcases.

Ibn Ezra

English

Sa‘adya Gaon says [Sa‘adya Gaon on this verse and on Exodus 23: 29] that lest the wild beasts become numerous alludes to the sign which will indicate at what future time they should undertake to overpower their enemies; but there is no need for this interpretation, as I have explained [cf. comment on Exodus 23: 29].

Ramban (Nachmanides)

English

THOU MAYEST NOT BE ABLE TO CONSUME THEM SPEEDILY. He is assuring them that G-d will destroy them all and send the hornet among them to destroy they that are left and they that hide themselves, and thus they will all [ultimately] perish. He states, however, that He will not completely destroy them in war in one day, nor will He drive them out of the Land in one year, lest the Land become desolate, and the beasts of the field multiply against thee. And He assured them further that those [of the peoples] that are left, will not be the majority, but that G-d shall confound them with a great confusion and most of them will be destroyed by the hand of Israel. And so he said, He will destroy them, and He will bring them down before thee; so shalt thou drive them out, and make them to perish quickly, [meaning] that you will destroy most of them quickly, but they will not be completely vanquished until thou be increased, and inherit the Land.
