Ecclésiaste 10:20

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

10

Le sage a le cœur à droite, le cœur du sot est à gauche.

English · The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

Even in your thoughts do not curse the King; and (even) in your bedchambers do not curse the wealthy. For the bird of Heaven [i.e., your soul, which will ultimately return to its source] will carry the voice, and the winged creature [the angel that accompanies you thither (viz. Psalms 91:11)] will speak the thing.

For what you know, do not disparage the king, and from your bedroom do not disparage the wealthy since birds in the sky carry the voice, and the one wings will tell the thing.

Rashi

English

Even in your thoughts [do not curse] the king. Even in your thoughts, without speech. “גַּם” means “even.”

Do not curse the king. Do not provoke the King of the Universe. Another explanation: According to its apparent meaning, this is a mortal king.

A bird of the skies. The soul, which is placed within you, which will ultimately fly up to the heaven.

And that which has wings. The angel who escorts you, as the matter is stated, “For He will command His angels on your behalf,” and according to its apparent meaning, “those who go back and forth;” [i.e.,] you should worry about every person, perhaps there are listeners, who will tell [the matter] to others.
