Ecclésiaste 3:14

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

3

2 עֵ֥ת לָלֶ֖דֶת        וְעֵ֣ת לָמ֑וּת        עֵ֣ת לָטַ֔עַת        וְעֵ֖ת לַעֲק֥וֹר נָטֽוּעַ׃         Il est un temps pour naître et un temps pour mourir, un temps pour planter et un temps pour déraciner ce qui était planté;
3 עֵ֤ת לַהֲרוֹג֙        וְעֵ֣ת לִרְפּ֔וֹא        עֵ֥ת לִפְר֖וֹץ        וְעֵ֥ת לִבְנֽוֹת׃         un temps pour tuer et un temps pour guérir, un temps pour démolir et un temps pour bâtir;
4 עֵ֤ת לִבְכּוֹת֙        וְעֵ֣ת לִשְׂח֔וֹק        עֵ֥ת סְפ֖וֹד        וְעֵ֥ת רְקֽוֹד׃         un temps pour pleurer et un temps pour rire, un temps pour se lamenter et un temps pour danser;
5 עֵ֚ת לְהַשְׁלִ֣יךְ אֲבָנִ֔ים        וְעֵ֖ת כְּנ֣וֹס אֲבָנִ֑ים        עֵ֣ת לַחֲב֔וֹק        וְעֵ֖ת לִרְחֹ֥ק מֵחַבֵּֽק׃         un temps pour jeter des pierres et un temps pour ramasser des pierres, un temps pour embrasser et un temps pour repousser les caresses;
6 עֵ֤ת לְבַקֵּשׁ֙        וְעֵ֣ת לְאַבֵּ֔ד        עֵ֥ת לִשְׁמ֖וֹר        וְעֵ֥ת לְהַשְׁלִֽיךְ׃         un temps pour chercher [ce qui est perdu] et un temps pour perdre, un temps pour conserver et un temps pour dissiper;
7 עֵ֤ת לִקְר֙וֹעַ֙        וְעֵ֣ת לִתְפּ֔וֹר        עֵ֥ת לַחֲשׁ֖וֹת        וְעֵ֥ת לְדַבֵּֽר׃         un temps pour déchirer et un temps pour coudre, un temps pour se taire et un temps pour parler;

I know that everything made by G-d [(in the creation)] is fit to endure [as is] forever, not to be added to or diminished; and [on those rare occasions when] G-d wrought [changes in the natural order, it was] so that men fear Him. [(This, then — doing mitzvoth and fearing G-d — should be the end of man.)]

Commentaires sur Ecclésiaste 3:14

Rashi

English

I know that whatever [God] does. The Holy One, Blessed Is He, in the Creation, is fit to be eternal, and it cannot be changed, either by adding or by subtracting, and when it is changed, [it is because] God commanded and caused it to be changed, in order that they should fear Him. The ocean broke through its boundary in the generation of Enosh and inundated a third of the world, and God did this so that they would fear Him. Seven days, the course of the sun was changed in the generation of the flood, to rise in the west and set in the east, in order that they fear Him. [Also,] the sun went back ten degrees in the days of Chizkiyahu; and in the days of Achaz his father, the day was shortened and the night was lengthened on the day of his death, so that he should not be eulogized. All this was so that they would fear Him. Therefore, there is nothing better for a man to occupy himself with than with [fulfilling] His commandments and to fear Him.
