Ecclésiaste 3:15

3

2 עֵ֥ת לָלֶ֖דֶת        וְעֵ֣ת לָמ֑וּת        עֵ֣ת לָטַ֔עַת        וְעֵ֖ת לַעֲק֥וֹר נָטֽוּעַ׃         Il est un temps pour naître et un temps pour mourir, un temps pour planter et un temps pour déraciner ce qui était planté;
3 עֵ֤ת לַהֲרוֹג֙        וְעֵ֣ת לִרְפּ֔וֹא        עֵ֥ת לִפְר֖וֹץ        וְעֵ֥ת לִבְנֽוֹת׃         un temps pour tuer et un temps pour guérir, un temps pour démolir et un temps pour bâtir;
4 עֵ֤ת לִבְכּוֹת֙        וְעֵ֣ת לִשְׂח֔וֹק        עֵ֥ת סְפ֖וֹד        וְעֵ֥ת רְקֽוֹד׃         un temps pour pleurer et un temps pour rire, un temps pour se lamenter et un temps pour danser;
5 עֵ֚ת לְהַשְׁלִ֣יךְ אֲבָנִ֔ים        וְעֵ֖ת כְּנ֣וֹס אֲבָנִ֑ים        עֵ֣ת לַחֲב֔וֹק        וְעֵ֖ת לִרְחֹ֥ק מֵחַבֵּֽק׃         un temps pour jeter des pierres et un temps pour ramasser des pierres, un temps pour embrasser et un temps pour repousser les caresses;
6 עֵ֤ת לְבַקֵּשׁ֙        וְעֵ֣ת לְאַבֵּ֔ד        עֵ֥ת לִשְׁמ֖וֹר        וְעֵ֥ת לְהַשְׁלִֽיךְ׃         un temps pour chercher [ce qui est perdu] et un temps pour perdre, un temps pour conserver et un temps pour dissiper;
7 עֵ֤ת לִקְר֙וֹעַ֙        וְעֵ֣ת לִתְפּ֔וֹר        עֵ֥ת לַחֲשׁ֖וֹת        וְעֵ֥ת לְדַבֵּֽר׃         un temps pour déchirer et un temps pour coudre, un temps pour se taire et un temps pour parler;

What happened [(before us)] has already taken place [and is known to us], and what is to come will be [consistent with] what has already been, [(the L-rd not changing in His tributes)] — G-d seeks out [the cause of] the pursued one [(to punish the pursuer. What profit, then, can accrue to him who toils for wrongful gain?)]

Commentaires sur Ecclésiaste 3:15

Rashi

English

That which already was. That which was before us, was already done, and we either saw it or heard it from others who saw it, and we can attest to it, for we saw that the Holy One, Blessed Is He, seeks the pursued. Yaakov was pursued, Eisav was a pursuer, [and Scripture states,] “And I loved Yaakov. But I hated Eisav.” The Egyptians pursued Yisroel; the Egyptians drowned in the sea, and [Bnei] Yisroel were victorious.

And that which is. Destined to be at the end is a model of what already was. As it was in the beginning, so will it be at the end. The Holy One, Blessed Is He, does not change His standards [by which He sustains] the world.

And God seeks the pursued. To punish the pursuer. Therefore, what benefit is derived by one who does evil in what he labors? Ultimately he will have to pay [for it].
