Ecclésiaste 4:1

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

4

1 וְשַׁ֣בְתִּֽי אֲנִ֗י וָאֶרְאֶה֙ אֶת־כׇּל־הָ֣עֲשֻׁקִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשִׂ֖ים תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ וְהִנֵּ֣ה ׀ דִּמְעַ֣ת הָעֲשֻׁקִ֗ים וְאֵ֤ין לָהֶם֙ מְנַחֵ֔ם וּמִיַּ֤ד עֹֽשְׁקֵיהֶם֙ כֹּ֔חַ וְאֵ֥ין לָהֶ֖ם מְנַחֵֽם׃ Puis je me mis à observer tous les actes d’oppression qui se commettent sous le soleil: partout des opprimés en larmes et personne pour les consoler!
2 וְשַׁבֵּ֧חַ אֲנִ֛י אֶת־הַמֵּתִ֖ים שֶׁכְּבָ֣ר מֵ֑תוּ מִן־הַ֣חַיִּ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֛ר הֵ֥מָּה חַיִּ֖ים עֲדֶֽנָה׃ Et j’estime plus heureux les morts, qui ont fini leur carrière, que les vivants qui ont prolongé leur existence jusqu’à présent;
3 וְטוֹב֙ מִשְּׁנֵיהֶ֔ם אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־עֲדֶ֖ן לֹ֣א הָיָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־רָאָה֙ אֶת־הַמַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה הָרָ֔ע אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשָׂ֖ה תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ mais plus heureux que les uns et les autres, celui qui n’a pas encore vécu, qui n’a pas vu l’œuvre mauvaise qui s’accomplit sous le soleil!

And I again saw [(by the Holy Spirit)] all of those who are scourged [(in Gehinnom) for the deeds] which are done in exchange for the sun [of Torah]. And, behold, the tears of the oppressed, [(weeping for their souls, that are scourged by destructive angels, viz. Psalms 87:4)], and who have no consoler. And in the hand of their scourgers there is power [(which they cannot resist)]; and they have no consoler.

I returned and would see all the oppression which is done under the sun, without the law, and behold: the tears of the oppressed without one to bring them to repentance; and in the hand of their oppressors, strength, without one to make a change.

Commentaires sur Ecclésiaste 4:1

Rashi

English

And I returned and considered. By means of the Holy Spirit.

All the oppressions. Who were made to be oppressed in Gehinnom for the deeds that were committed.

Under the sun. תַּחַת [meaning] in exchange for the Torah.

And behold, tears of the oppressed. Weeping for their souls, which are oppressed in the hand of the destructive and cruel angels, and similarly it says, “Transgressors in the valley of weeping, transform it into a fountain,” these are the ones who descend to Gehinnom. And this verse too is expounded in this manner in Sifre.

And from the hand of their oppressors [flows the] power. Their oppressors overwhelm them and attack them with force.
