Ecclésiaste 4:16

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

4

1 וְשַׁ֣בְתִּֽי אֲנִ֗י וָאֶרְאֶה֙ אֶת־כׇּל־הָ֣עֲשֻׁקִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשִׂ֖ים תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ וְהִנֵּ֣ה ׀ דִּמְעַ֣ת הָעֲשֻׁקִ֗ים וְאֵ֤ין לָהֶם֙ מְנַחֵ֔ם וּמִיַּ֤ד עֹֽשְׁקֵיהֶם֙ כֹּ֔חַ וְאֵ֥ין לָהֶ֖ם מְנַחֵֽם׃ Puis je me mis à observer tous les actes d’oppression qui se commettent sous le soleil: partout des opprimés en larmes et personne pour les consoler!
2 וְשַׁבֵּ֧חַ אֲנִ֛י אֶת־הַמֵּתִ֖ים שֶׁכְּבָ֣ר מֵ֑תוּ מִן־הַ֣חַיִּ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֛ר הֵ֥מָּה חַיִּ֖ים עֲדֶֽנָה׃ Et j’estime plus heureux les morts, qui ont fini leur carrière, que les vivants qui ont prolongé leur existence jusqu’à présent;
3 וְטוֹב֙ מִשְּׁנֵיהֶ֔ם אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־עֲדֶ֖ן לֹ֣א הָיָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־רָאָה֙ אֶת־הַמַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה הָרָ֔ע אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשָׂ֖ה תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ mais plus heureux que les uns et les autres, celui qui n’a pas encore vécu, qui n’a pas vu l’œuvre mauvaise qui s’accomplit sous le soleil!

There is no end to all the people, to all [the good] that was before them. The latter ones, too, will not rejoice in it. For this, too, is [the outcome of] vanity and breaking of spirit.

Commentaires sur Ecclésiaste 4:16

Rashi

English

There was no limit to all the peoples. They were fruitful and multiplied too much, as it is stated, “their children are [well established] in their sight,” a woman would conceive and bear in three days, “They send out their infants [i.e., carefree] like sheep.”

To all of them whom he lead. There was no end to all the good that they had, but all was lost, and in an instant descended to the grave.

Even though [it is so now] those who come after [the next generation]. The generation of dispersion.

Will not rejoice. Also they, with the good that was given into their hands.

For this too. Its end is that of vanity and frustration, when a person follows his [evil] inclination.
