17 הִנֵּ֞ה אֲשֶׁר־רָאִ֣יתִי אָ֗נִי ט֣וֹב אֲשֶׁר־יָפֶ֣ה לֶֽאֱכוֹל־וְ֠לִשְׁתּ֠וֹת וְלִרְא֨וֹת טוֹבָ֜ה בְּכׇל־עֲמָל֣וֹ ׀ שֶׁיַּעֲמֹ֣ל תַּֽחַת־הַשֶּׁ֗מֶשׁ מִסְפַּ֧ר יְמֵי־חַיָּ֛ו אֲשֶׁר־נָֽתַן־ל֥וֹ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים כִּי־ה֥וּא חֶלְקֽוֹ׃ Or donc, ce que j’ai reconnu comme bon, comme convenable, c’est de manger et de boire, de jouir du bien-être dû à toutes les peines qu’on se donne sous le soleil, au cours de l’existence que Dieu nous octroie: c’est là notre lot.
18 גַּ֣ם כׇּֽל־הָאָדָ֡ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָֽתַן־ל֣וֹ הָאֱלֹהִים֩ עֹ֨שֶׁר וּנְכָסִ֜ים וְהִשְׁלִיט֨וֹ לֶאֱכֹ֤ל מִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ וְלָשֵׂ֣את אֶת־חֶלְק֔וֹ וְלִשְׂמֹ֖חַ בַּעֲמָל֑וֹ זֹ֕ה מַתַּ֥ת אֱלֹהִ֖ים הִֽיא׃ En effet, supposez un homme que Dieu a comblé de richesses et de biens et rendu maître d’en jouir, d’en prendre sa bonne part et d’être en liesse, grâce à son travail: ce sera un don de Dieu!

For not for long will he remember the [short] days of his life. [Why, then, should he exert himself to acquire wealth? Let him exert himself in the eternal Torah for the eternal world]. For G-d is testimony [in the next world] to the joy of his heart [(i.e., in his having rejoiced in doing good in his lifetime)].

Commentaires sur Ecclésiaste 5:19

Rashi

English

For there are not many. For there is no longevity in this world.

Let him remember the days of his life. For they are few and not many; so why then should he bother to accumulate wealth? Let him labor with something that endures for him in the World to Come during his lifetime.

While God answers [provides] him, etc. The Holy One, Blessed Is He, bears a permanent testimony about this eternally.

With the joy of his heart. That he rejoiced to do good in his lifetime, and I saw in the Midrash, that this refers to Elkanah, who led Yisroel up to Shiloh on the festivals, and on the route that he brought them up on one year he did not bring them back the following year, in order to publicize the matter and to accustom them. Therefore, Scripture praises him, “This man would go up from his city, etc.” I believe that this Midrash is at the end of the verse, “for God answers [provides] him with the joy of his heart.” This is Elkanah, whom the Holy One, Blessed Is He, established in Scripture, and testifies about him, “this man would go up from his city.”

Answers [provides] him. This is vowelized with a small pasach [=segol].. Therefore, I explain it as a noun, as in, “for there was no answer מַעֲנֶה in the mouth[s] of the three men.”

With the joy of his heart. That he was happy on the festival.
