5

17 הִנֵּ֞ה אֲשֶׁר־רָאִ֣יתִי אָ֗נִי ט֣וֹב אֲשֶׁר־יָפֶ֣ה לֶֽאֱכוֹל־וְ֠לִשְׁתּ֠וֹת וְלִרְא֨וֹת טוֹבָ֜ה בְּכׇל־עֲמָל֣וֹ ׀ שֶׁיַּעֲמֹ֣ל תַּֽחַת־הַשֶּׁ֗מֶשׁ מִסְפַּ֧ר יְמֵי־חַיָּ֛ו אֲשֶׁר־נָֽתַן־ל֥וֹ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים כִּי־ה֥וּא חֶלְקֽוֹ׃ Or donc, ce que j’ai reconnu comme bon, comme convenable, c’est de manger et de boire, de jouir du bien-être dû à toutes les peines qu’on se donne sous le soleil, au cours de l’existence que Dieu nous octroie: c’est là notre lot.
18 גַּ֣ם כׇּֽל־הָאָדָ֡ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָֽתַן־ל֣וֹ הָאֱלֹהִים֩ עֹ֨שֶׁר וּנְכָסִ֜ים וְהִשְׁלִיט֨וֹ לֶאֱכֹ֤ל מִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ וְלָשֵׂ֣את אֶת־חֶלְק֔וֹ וְלִשְׂמֹ֖חַ בַּעֲמָל֑וֹ זֹ֕ה מַתַּ֥ת אֱלֹהִ֖ים הִֽיא׃ En effet, supposez un homme que Dieu a comblé de richesses et de biens et rendu maître d’en jouir, d’en prendre sa bonne part et d’être en liesse, grâce à son travail: ce sera un don de Dieu!

If oppression of the poor and miscarriage of justice and of righteousness you see in the land, do not wonder about the will [(of G-d when He brings evil upon the evildoers)]. For high upon high is the Watcher [(and He sees their deeds)], and there are those who are higher than they [(and who execute the L-rd's command to exact payment of them)]

Commentaires sur Ecclésiaste 5:7

Rashi

English

Oppression of the poor, perversion of justice and righteousness, etc. If you see in the province that they oppress the poor and deprive justice and righteousness.

Do not be astonished. About the will of the Omnipresent, when He exacts retribution upon them.

For One higher than the high watches. And sees their deeds, and there are higher ones over them who carry out the mission of the Omnipresent, and their hand is strong to punish them.

Perversion of justice. Deprivation of justice. Since it is in the construct [i.e., possessive] state, גֵּזֶל is vowelized with a small patach [=segol], for were it not possessive, גָּזֵל would be vowelized with a kametz. Another explanation: If you see that they oppress the poor and deprive [them of] justice, and you see charity coming toward the city, [i.e.,] that the Holy One, Blessed Is He, lavishes goodness upon them and does not mete out retribution upon them, do not wonder about the will of the Omnipresent, for so is His custom, to be slow to anger.

For One higher than the high watches. He waits until their measure is filled.

And there are high ones. He has [many agents] over them to punish them when their time of visitation arrives, as in, “you do not wait תִּשְׁמוֹר for my sin,” [and as in,] “awaiting שֹׁמֵר the realization,” [and as in,] “awaited שָׁמַר the matter.”
