Ecclésiaste 8:14

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

8

11 אֲשֶׁר֙ אֵין־נַעֲשָׂ֣ה פִתְגָ֔ם מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה הָרָעָ֖ה מְהֵרָ֑ה עַל־כֵּ֡ן מָלֵ֞א לֵ֧ב בְּֽנֵי־הָאָדָ֛ם בָּהֶ֖ם לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת רָֽע׃ Par cela même qu’une sanction n’atteint pas immédiatement les mauvaises actions, le cœur des fils d’Adam s’enhardit à faire le mal;
15 וְשִׁבַּ֤חְתִּֽי אֲנִי֙ אֶת־הַשִּׂמְחָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֵֽין־ט֤וֹב לָֽאָדָם֙ תַּ֣חַת הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ כִּ֛י אִם־לֶאֱכֹ֥ל וְלִשְׁתּ֖וֹת וְלִשְׂמ֑וֹחַ וְה֞וּא יִלְוֶ֣נּוּ בַעֲמָל֗וֹ יְמֵ֥י חַיָּ֛יו אֲשֶׁר־נָֽתַן־ל֥וֹ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ Aussi ai-je prôné la joie, puisque rien n’est bon pour l’homme sous le soleil comme de manger, de boire et de se réjouir; c’est là ce qui lui demeure fidèle au milieu de ses peines, tout le long de la vie que Dieu lui a octroyée sous le soleil.
16 כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר נָתַ֤תִּי אֶת־לִבִּי֙ לָדַ֣עַת חׇכְמָ֔ה וְלִרְאוֹת֙ אֶת־הָ֣עִנְיָ֔ן אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשָׂ֖ה עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ כִּ֣י גַ֤ם בַּיּוֹם֙ וּבַלַּ֔יְלָה שֵׁנָ֕ה בְּעֵינָ֖יו אֵינֶ֥נּוּ רֹאֶֽה׃ Lorsque je me suis appliqué à connaître la sagesse et à envisager la besogne qui s’accomplit sur la terre, [j’ai vu] que tant le jour que la nuit le sommeil fuit ses yeux.

There is a vanity which is done upon the earth: that there are righteous men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous—I said that this also is vanity.

English · The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

There is vanity [(confounding men)] that is done upon the earth — righteous men being visited [with evil,] which befits the deeds of the wicked, and wicked men being accorded [good,] which befits the deeds of the righteous. I said: This, too, is vanity [i.e., one of the vanities incident to the world].

There is something ephemeral that occurs on earth, that there is a righteous person who achieves according to the deeds of the wicked; and there are wicked people who achieve for themselves according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this is also a vanishing mist.

Rashi

English

There is a vanity. Something that confounds mankind.

There are righteous men. To whom evil happens [as though] they acted wickedly, and there are wicked to whom good happens [as though] they acted righteously. I said that this too is one of the vanities that prevails in the world. However, our Rabbis expounded it in a different manner in Maseches Horiyos, but it is not explained satisfactorily to me, according to the words that the wise man concludes by saying, “This too is vanity.”
