Ecclésiaste 8:15

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

8

11 אֲשֶׁר֙ אֵין־נַעֲשָׂ֣ה פִתְגָ֔ם מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה הָרָעָ֖ה מְהֵרָ֑ה עַל־כֵּ֡ן מָלֵ֞א לֵ֧ב בְּֽנֵי־הָאָדָ֛ם בָּהֶ֖ם לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת רָֽע׃ Par cela même qu’une sanction n’atteint pas immédiatement les mauvaises actions, le cœur des fils d’Adam s’enhardit à faire le mal;
15 וְשִׁבַּ֤חְתִּֽי אֲנִי֙ אֶת־הַשִּׂמְחָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֵֽין־ט֤וֹב לָֽאָדָם֙ תַּ֣חַת הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ כִּ֛י אִם־לֶאֱכֹ֥ל וְלִשְׁתּ֖וֹת וְלִשְׂמ֑וֹחַ וְה֞וּא יִלְוֶ֣נּוּ בַעֲמָל֗וֹ יְמֵ֥י חַיָּ֛יו אֲשֶׁר־נָֽתַן־ל֥וֹ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ Aussi ai-je prôné la joie, puisque rien n’est bon pour l’homme sous le soleil comme de manger, de boire et de se réjouir; c’est là ce qui lui demeure fidèle au milieu de ses peines, tout le long de la vie que Dieu lui a octroyée sous le soleil.
16 כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר נָתַ֤תִּי אֶת־לִבִּי֙ לָדַ֣עַת חׇכְמָ֔ה וְלִרְאוֹת֙ אֶת־הָ֣עִנְיָ֔ן אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשָׂ֖ה עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ כִּ֣י גַ֤ם בַּיּוֹם֙ וּבַלַּ֔יְלָה שֵׁנָ֕ה בְּעֵינָ֖יו אֵינֶ֥נּוּ רֹאֶֽה׃ Lorsque je me suis appliqué à connaître la sagesse et à envisager la besogne qui s’accomplit sur la terre, [j’ai vu] que tant le jour que la nuit le sommeil fuit ses yeux.

And I praised the happiness [(of rejoicing in one's lot and occupying oneself with joy-giving mitzvoth and with shunning transgression)], there being nothing better for a man [all] the days of his life that G-d has given him under the sun than eating, drinking, and rejoicing [in this manner]. And it [(this joy)] will accompany him in his toil.

Commentaires sur Ecclésiaste 8:15

Rashi

English

Rejoicing. That he should be happy with in his lot and engage in the “upright commands,” which “cause the heart to rejoice,” and he should not be immersed in increasing his wealth by means of usury, interest and robbery. Whoever is not happy with his lot and is immersed in amassing wealth, eventually commits the sins of robbery, fraud, and usury. Also, one who is not happy with his lot concerning the love of his wife, is immersed in [a passionate lust for] women, and harbors sinful thoughts about married women.

To eat and drink. From that which the Holy One, Blessed Is He, graciously granted him, and to be happy with his lot. And the Midrash Aggadah [states], that all mention of “eating and drinking” in Koheles, refers only to the study of Torah, as the matter is stated, “go, buy, and eat, etc.”

And this will accompany him. Will join him, as the matter is stated, “and your righteousness shall go before you.”

[All] the days of his life which God has given him. He shall do so, and the end of the verse is connected to its beginning, and it is a transposed verse [whose meaning is], “there is nothing better for man in [all] the days of his life that God has given him than to eat and drink and be joyful, and this will accompany him in his toil.”
