Ecclésiaste 8:17

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

8

11 אֲשֶׁר֙ אֵין־נַעֲשָׂ֣ה פִתְגָ֔ם מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה הָרָעָ֖ה מְהֵרָ֑ה עַל־כֵּ֡ן מָלֵ֞א לֵ֧ב בְּֽנֵי־הָאָדָ֛ם בָּהֶ֖ם לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת רָֽע׃ Par cela même qu’une sanction n’atteint pas immédiatement les mauvaises actions, le cœur des fils d’Adam s’enhardit à faire le mal;
15 וְשִׁבַּ֤חְתִּֽי אֲנִי֙ אֶת־הַשִּׂמְחָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֵֽין־ט֤וֹב לָֽאָדָם֙ תַּ֣חַת הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ כִּ֛י אִם־לֶאֱכֹ֥ל וְלִשְׁתּ֖וֹת וְלִשְׂמ֑וֹחַ וְה֞וּא יִלְוֶ֣נּוּ בַעֲמָל֗וֹ יְמֵ֥י חַיָּ֛יו אֲשֶׁר־נָֽתַן־ל֥וֹ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ Aussi ai-je prôné la joie, puisque rien n’est bon pour l’homme sous le soleil comme de manger, de boire et de se réjouir; c’est là ce qui lui demeure fidèle au milieu de ses peines, tout le long de la vie que Dieu lui a octroyée sous le soleil.
16 כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר נָתַ֤תִּי אֶת־לִבִּי֙ לָדַ֣עַת חׇכְמָ֔ה וְלִרְאוֹת֙ אֶת־הָ֣עִנְיָ֔ן אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשָׂ֖ה עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ כִּ֣י גַ֤ם בַּיּוֹם֙ וּבַלַּ֔יְלָה שֵׁנָ֕ה בְּעֵינָ֖יו אֵינֶ֥נּוּ רֹאֶֽה׃ Lorsque je me suis appliqué à connaître la sagesse et à envisager la besogne qui s’accomplit sur la terre, [j’ai vu] que tant le jour que la nuit le sommeil fuit ses yeux.

English · The Rashi Ketuvim by Rabbi Shraga Silverstein

Then I saw, of all the acts of G-d [that He revealed to men], that a man could not discover the full meaning of the deed that is done [by G-d] under the sun [e.g., the wicked prospering and the righteous failing]. For [I have seen] many men toiling to seek it and not finding it. And even if the sage claims to know it, he cannot know it, [(as even Moses could not know it), viz. Exodus 33:13, etc.]

Then I saw that God makes it so that a person cannot find out the deed that is done under the sun; for though he strive and search, a person will not find out, and also even if a wise person claims to know, he is not able to find out.

Rashi

English

And I saw all the works of God. That He gave over to mankind.

That man cannot discover, etc. Mankind is unable to fathom the ways of the Holy One, Blessed Is He, what the reward is for all the work that is done under the sun, for they see wicked men prospering and righteous men declining.

And though a man labor to seek. Because I saw many [people] toiling to seek and to fathom this matter, but they are unable.

And even though a wise man declares. That he understands it, he will not be able to, for Moshe our teacher could not comprehend this matter, when he said, “please make Your way known to me.”
