Isaïe 58:3

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

58

2 וְאוֹתִ֗י י֥וֹם יוֹם֙ יִדְרֹשׁ֔וּן וְדַ֥עַת דְּרָכַ֖י יֶחְפָּצ֑וּן כְּג֞וֹי אֲשֶׁר־צְדָקָ֣ה עָשָׂ֗ה וּמִשְׁפַּ֤ט אֱלֹהָיו֙ לֹ֣א עָזָ֔ב יִשְׁאָל֙וּנִי֙ מִשְׁפְּטֵי־צֶ֔דֶק קִרְבַ֥ת אֱלֹהִ֖ים יֶחְפָּצֽוּן׃ Jour par jour ils s’adressent à moi et manifestent le désir de connaître mes voies; à la façon d’un peuple pratiquant la justice, qui n’aurait jamais trahi la loi de son Dieu, ils me demandent des règles de justice, ils sollicitent la présence de Dieu.
6 הֲל֣וֹא זֶה֮ צ֣וֹם אֶבְחָרֵ֒הוּ֒ פַּתֵּ֙חַ֙ חַרְצֻבּ֣וֹת רֶ֔שַׁע הַתֵּ֖ר אֲגֻדּ֣וֹת מוֹטָ֑ה וְשַׁלַּ֤ח רְצוּצִים֙ חׇפְשִׁ֔ים וְכׇל־מוֹטָ֖ה תְּנַתֵּֽקוּ׃ Mais voici le jeûne que j’aime: c’est de rompre les chaînes de l’injustice, de dénouer les liens de tous les jougs, de renvoyer libres ceux qu’on opprime, de briser enfin toute servitude;
9 אָ֤ז תִּקְרָא֙ וַיהֹוָ֣ה יַעֲנֶ֔ה תְּשַׁוַּ֖ע וְיֹאמַ֣ר הִנֵּ֑נִי אִם־תָּסִ֤יר מִתּֽוֹכְךָ֙ מוֹטָ֔ה שְׁלַ֥ח אֶצְבַּ֖ע וְדַבֶּר־אָֽוֶן׃ Alors tu appelleras et le Seigneur répondra, tu supplieras et il dira: "Me voici!"
12 וּבָנ֤וּ מִמְּךָ֙ חׇרְב֣וֹת עוֹלָ֔ם מוֹסְדֵ֥י דוֹר־וָד֖וֹר תְּקוֹמֵ֑ם וְקֹרָ֤א לְךָ֙ גֹּדֵ֣ר פֶּ֔רֶץ מְשֹׁבֵ֥ב נְתִיב֖וֹת לָשָֽׁבֶת׃ On restaurera, grâce à toi, les ruines antiques, tu relèveras des fondations qui datent des siècles passés, et tu seras proclamé le réparateur des brèches, le restaurateur des routes désormais populeuses.
14 אָ֗ז תִּתְעַנַּג֙ עַל־יְהֹוָ֔ה וְהִרְכַּבְתִּ֖יךָ עַל־[בָּ֣מֳתֵי] (במותי) אָ֑רֶץ וְהַאֲכַלְתִּ֗יךָ נַחֲלַת֙ יַעֲקֹ֣ב אָבִ֔יךָ כִּ֛י פִּ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה דִּבֵּֽר׃ {פ}

They say, Wherefore do we fast, as it is revealed before Thee? wherefore have we afflicted ourselves, as known unto Thee? The prophet said unto them, Behold, in the day of your fast ye seek your extortions, and ye bring near all your stumbling-blocks.

Ibn Ezra

English

Wherefore have we fasted, etc. They fast, and then they say, Wherefore have we fasted. And thou seest not, etc. It is as if thou didst not see, nor take any knowledge of it; for thou dost not help us. The reply to these questions is: Behold in the day of your fast, etc. On the very day of the fast every one that has a dispute with his neighbour proceeds with his lawsuit.

עצביכם Your debtors. עצבים means money. Comp. ועצביך and thy wealth (Prov. 5:10); it is probably connected with עצבון labour2a (Gen. 3:17); comp. יגיע בפיך the labour of thine hands (Ps. 128:2); יגיע מצרים the labour of Egypt (45:14).

You press. It is written in full with נ, like כהנדוף as is driven, תנדף drive (Ps. ixviii. 3). And you press all your debtors. Comp. אשה בעלת יראת יי═אשה יראת יי a woman that feareth the Lord (Prov. 31:30); there are many other instances of this kind of ellipsis.
