Commentaires sur Psaumes 4:6

Rashi

English

Offer up sacrifices of righteousness Perform righteous deeds, and it will be as if you are offering up sacrifices.

and trust in the Lord to lavish upon you goodness, and do not sin against Him for money, in the hope that you will be rewarded by Saul.

Ibn Ezra

English

Offer sacrifices of righteousness (זִבְחוּ זִבְחֵי־צֶדֶק - Zivchu zivchei tzedek): These are the Shelamim (Peace Offerings), whose designated portions for the altar (emureihem) are offered not on account of an Asham (Guilt Offering) or a Chatat (Sin Offering). [Nor are they equivalent to] an Olah (Burnt Offering) [which can be related to atonement for sinful] thoughts that arise in the heart (olah al ha-lev), which is the thought (she-hi ha-machshavah). And one cannot argue [against this distinction] from (Psalm 51:21): "Then You will delight in sacrifices of righteousness (zivchei tzedek), burnt offering (olah) and whole offering (kalil)." Because the meaning [there] is "[sacrifices of righteousness] and burnt offering," corresponding to [a list like saying] "Reuben and Simeon" [as distinct, separate entities].

And the meaning of Offer sacrifices (zivchu) [in this specific context] is: Abandon words of emptiness (divrei rik) [referring back to v. 3: "love illusions/emptiness (rik)"], and give thanks (hodu) to Ad-nai, who gave His pleasantness (no'amo) to you.

Radak (David Kimhi)

English

Offer the sacrifices of righteousness: – Since you have done evil, behold, you need atonement; offer then to the Lord the sacrifices of righteousness so as ye repent, and not sacrifices like those of the wicked, of which it is said (Prov. 21:27), “the sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination” for they return to their wickedness after the sacrifices; therefore he says: the sacrifices of righteousness.

And put your trust in the Lord: – not in your might and the fact that ye are a great multitude, but in the Lord alone shall ye trust. And he connects בטח (trust) here with the preposition אֶל (to) as equivalent to על (on); and so, “Trust in (אל) the Lord with all thine heart” (ibid. 3:5); and “Trust ye not in (אל) lying words” (Jer. 7:4).
