Ruth 3:8

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

3

7 וַיֹּ֨אכַל בֹּ֤עַז וַיֵּשְׁתְּ֙ וַיִּיטַ֣ב לִבּ֔וֹ וַיָּבֹ֕א לִשְׁכַּ֖ב בִּקְצֵ֣ה הָעֲרֵמָ֑ה וַתָּבֹ֣א בַלָּ֔ט וַתְּגַ֥ל מַרְגְּלֹתָ֖יו וַתִּשְׁכָּֽב׃ Booz mangea et but et fut d’humeur joyeuse; puis il alla se coucher au pied du monceau de blé.
11 וְעַתָּ֗ה בִּתִּי֙ אַל־תִּ֣ירְאִ֔י כֹּ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־תֹּאמְרִ֖י אֶעֱשֶׂה־לָּ֑ךְ כִּ֤י יוֹדֵ֙עַ֙ כׇּל־שַׁ֣עַר עַמִּ֔י כִּ֛י אֵ֥שֶׁת חַ֖יִל אָֽתְּ׃ Maintenant, ma fille, sois sans crainte; tout ce que tu me demanderas, je le ferai pour toi, car tous les habitants de notre ville savent que tu es une vaillante femme.
17 וַתֹּ֕אמֶר שֵׁשׁ־הַשְּׂעֹרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה נָ֣תַן לִ֑י כִּ֚י אָמַ֣ר [אֵלַ֔י] אַל־תָּב֥וֹאִי רֵיקָ֖ם אֶל־חֲמוֹתֵֽךְ׃ "Voici, ajouta-t-elle, six mesures d’orge qu’il m’a données en me disant: Tu ne dois pas revenir les mains vides auprès de ta belle-mère."

Commentaires sur Ruth 3:8

Rashi

English

The man was startled. He thought it was a demon and wanted to scream, but she held him and encompassed him with her arms.

And [he] turned about. וַיִּלָּפֵת =] and he was seized, as in, “And Shimshon grasped וַיִּלְפֹּת.”

And behold there was a woman. He placed his hand on her head and recognized that it was a woman [and not a demon].

Ibn Ezra

English

"וילפת (and turned over):" From the Nifal (passive) verb form, like in 'ילפתו ארחות דרכם' (their paths are twisted). The meaning is twisted or turned. Similarly, 'וילפת שמשון' (Samson turned). It does not mean joy. The idea is that he turned from one side to the other.

"והנה אשה (and behold, a woman):" It is possible that she said to him, 'Do not be afraid,' as a woman's voice is always recognizable; or the moonlight was bright, and he saw that she had no beard. He could also recognize her by her clothing.
