Ruth 3:9

Bible du Rabbinat 1899 [fr]

3

7 וַיֹּ֨אכַל בֹּ֤עַז וַיֵּשְׁתְּ֙ וַיִּיטַ֣ב לִבּ֔וֹ וַיָּבֹ֕א לִשְׁכַּ֖ב בִּקְצֵ֣ה הָעֲרֵמָ֑ה וַתָּבֹ֣א בַלָּ֔ט וַתְּגַ֥ל מַרְגְּלֹתָ֖יו וַתִּשְׁכָּֽב׃ Booz mangea et but et fut d’humeur joyeuse; puis il alla se coucher au pied du monceau de blé.
11 וְעַתָּ֗ה בִּתִּי֙ אַל־תִּ֣ירְאִ֔י כֹּ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־תֹּאמְרִ֖י אֶעֱשֶׂה־לָּ֑ךְ כִּ֤י יוֹדֵ֙עַ֙ כׇּל־שַׁ֣עַר עַמִּ֔י כִּ֛י אֵ֥שֶׁת חַ֖יִל אָֽתְּ׃ Maintenant, ma fille, sois sans crainte; tout ce que tu me demanderas, je le ferai pour toi, car tous les habitants de notre ville savent que tu es une vaillante femme.
17 וַתֹּ֕אמֶר שֵׁשׁ־הַשְּׂעֹרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה נָ֣תַן לִ֑י כִּ֚י אָמַ֣ר [אֵלַ֔י] אַל־תָּב֥וֹאִי רֵיקָ֖ם אֶל־חֲמוֹתֵֽךְ׃ "Voici, ajouta-t-elle, six mesures d’orge qu’il m’a données en me disant: Tu ne dois pas revenir les mains vides auprès de ta belle-mère."

And he said: Who are you? And she said: I am Ruth, your maidservant. Spread your [garment-] corner over your maidservant [i.e., take me as your wife], for you are a redeemer [(to redeem our inheritance, that Na'ami and I must sell. Acquire it, and me along with it, so that the dead one's name will be perpetuated thereby. When I come to the field (of the inheritance), people will say: This was the wife of Machlon.)]

Commentaires sur Ruth 3:9

Rashi

English

Spread your mantle. The corner of your garment to cover me with your cloak; and this is an expression of marriage.

For you are a near kinsman. To redeem my husband’s inheritance, as it is stated, “and a close relative comes and redeems, etc.” And my mother-in-law and I must sell our inheritance, and now it is incumbent upon you to buy it. Acquire [i.e., marry] me also, along with it, so that the name of the deceased be remembered upon his estate, so that when I come to the field they will say, “this is Machlon’s wife.”

Ibn Ezra

English

"ופרשת (and you shall spread):" A hint to take her as a wife.

"כי גואל אתה (for you are a kinsman-redeemer):" For this is the custom of all Israel, as No῾omi had informed her.
