Aliya 7

2 וְאֵת֙ כׇּל־נַפְתָּלִ֔י וְאֶת־אֶ֥רֶץ אֶפְרַ֖יִם וּמְנַשֶּׁ֑ה וְאֵת֙ כׇּל־אֶ֣רֶץ יְהוּדָ֔ה עַ֖ד הַיָּ֥ם הָאַחֲרֽוֹן׃ tout Nephtali, le territoire d’Ephraïm et de Manassé, et le territoire entier de Juda jusqu’à la mer ultérieure;
9 וִיהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ בִּן־נ֗וּן מָלֵא֙ ר֣וּחַ חׇכְמָ֔ה כִּֽי־סָמַ֥ךְ מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶת־יָדָ֖יו עָלָ֑יו וַיִּשְׁמְע֨וּ אֵלָ֤יו בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֔וּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה׃ Or, Josué, fils de Noun, était plein de l’esprit de sagesse, parce que Moïse lui avait imposé les mains; et les enfants d’Israël lui obéirent et agirent comme l’Éternel l’avait prescrit à Moïse.
11 לְכׇל־הָ֨אֹתֹ֜ת וְהַמּוֹפְתִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר שְׁלָחוֹ֙ יְהֹוָ֔ה לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם לְפַרְעֹ֥ה וּלְכׇל־עֲבָדָ֖יו וּלְכׇל־אַרְצֽוֹ׃ eu égard à tant de signes et de prodiges que le Seigneur lui donna mission d’opérer en Égypte, sur Pharaon, ses serviteurs et son pays entier;

Targum Jonathan

English

Blessed be the Name of the Lord of the world, who hath taught us His righteous way. He hath taught us to clothe the naked, as He clothed Adam and Hava; He hath taught us to unite the bridegroom and the bride in marriage, as He united Hava to Adam. He hath taught us to visit the sick, as He revealed Himself to Abraham when he was ill, from being circumcised; He hath taught us to console the mourners, as He revealed Himself again to Jakob when returning from Padan, in the place where his mother had died. He hath taught us to feed the poor, as He sent Israel bread from heaven; He hath taught us to bury the dead by (what He did for) Mosheh; for He revealed Himself in His Word, and with Him the companies of ministering angels. Michael and Gabriel spread forth the golden bed, fastened with chrysolites, gems, and beryls, adorned with hangings of purple silk, and satin, and white linens. Metatron, Jophiel, and Uriel, and Jephephya, the wise sages, laid him upon it, and by His Word He conducted him four miles, and buried him in the valley opposite Beth Peor; that Israel, as oft as they look up to Peor, may have the memory of their sin; and at sight of the burying place of Mosheh may be humbled: but no man knoweth his sepulchre unto this day.

Ibn Ezra

English

He buried him He buried himself (by going into a crypt within the Gai). Compare, “the shepherds tended themselves [literally: the shepherds tended them]” [Ezekiel 34: 8] and “the officers of the Children of Israel saw them” [Exodus 5: 19]. Mount Avarim (also known as Mount Nebo, named for a star) is the same place as the Gai which is at the top of the cliff across from Beth-Peor. This is attested to by Scripture, which states that Israel traveled from Bamoth to “the Gai which is in the field of Moab, by the top of a cliff” [Numbers 21: 20]; Scripture also states that “Moshe ascended from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of the cliff” [: 1], where he died and was buried. Elsewhere Scripture says, “we stayed in the Gai, across Beth-Peor” [3: 29]; and subsequent to their encampment in the Gai, Scripture says that “the Children of Israel marched on and encamped at the plains of Moab” [Numbers 22: 1] [see also 3: 29]. But in another place, Scripture says, “they encamped in the hills of Avarim, in front of Nebo; then they marched from the hills of Avarim , and encamped in the plains of Moab” [Numbers 33: 47–48]. And it is clear that the place where Moshe died would be the place where he was buried.

to this day These are Joshua’s words [Bava Batra 15a], who wrote them, most likely, toward the end of his life.

ויקבור אותו, if Moses buried himself, as is the opinion of some of our commentators, (compare Rashi) it would have been his disembodied soul that accomplished this, for it is stated clearly that his body died on the summit of the mountain from which he viewed the Holy Land, as the Torah wrote in verse 5: “Moses died there.” On the other hand, the burial is described in our verse as having taken place in the valley.
