Aliya 2

Il leur dit: "Connaissez-vous Laban, fils de Nahor?" Ils répondirent: "Nous le connaissons."
7 וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הֵ֥ן עוֹד֙ הַיּ֣וֹם גָּד֔וֹל לֹא־עֵ֖ת הֵאָסֵ֣ף הַמִּקְנֶ֑ה הַשְׁק֥וּ הַצֹּ֖אן וּלְכ֥וּ רְעֽוּ׃ "Mais," reprit-il, "le jour est encore long, il n’est pas l’heure de faire rentrer le bétail: abreuvez les brebis et les menez paître."
8 וַיֹּאמְרוּ֮ לֹ֣א נוּכַל֒ עַ֣ד אֲשֶׁ֤ר יֵאָֽסְפוּ֙ כׇּל־הָ֣עֲדָרִ֔ים וְגָֽלְלוּ֙ אֶת־הָאֶ֔בֶן מֵעַ֖ל פִּ֣י הַבְּאֵ֑ר וְהִשְׁקִ֖ינוּ הַצֹּֽאן׃ Ils dirent: "Nous ne saurions, jusqu’à ce que tous les troupeaux soient rassemblés: on déplacera alors la pierre qui couvre l’orifice du puits et nous ferons boire les brebis."
Jacob raconta à Laban tous ces événements.
Alors Laban dit à Jacob: "Quoi! parce que tu es mon parent, tu me servirais gratuitement? Déclare moi quel doit être ton salaire."

25 וַיְהִ֣י בַבֹּ֔קֶר וְהִנֵּה־הִ֖וא לֵאָ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־לָבָ֗ן מַה־זֹּאת֙ עָשִׂ֣יתָ לִּ֔י הֲלֹ֤א בְרָחֵל֙ עָבַ֣דְתִּי עִמָּ֔ךְ וְלָ֖מָּה רִמִּיתָֽנִי׃ Or, le matin, il se trouva que c’était Léa; et il dit à Laban: "Que m’as-tu fait là!
Elle dit: "Ah! désormais mon époux me sera attaché, puisque je lui ai donné trois fils." C’est pourquoi on l’appela Lévi.
C’est pourquoi elle le nomma Juda. Alors elle cessa d’enfanter.

Commentaires sur Genèse 29:17

Rashi

English

"The eyes of Leah were soft". For she supposed that she would be fated to become Esau's [wife] and she wept. For everyone used to say: "Rebecca has two two sons; Lavan has two daughters - the older [daughter] for the older [son] and the younger [daughter] for the younger [son]."

Targum Jonathan

English

And the eyes of Leah were moist, (or dropping, running,) from weeping and praying before the Lord that he would not destine her for Esau the wicked; and Rahel was beautiful in appearance, and of a fair countenance.

Ibn Ezra

Rashbam

English

רכות, beautiful; our sages in Taanit 24 say that when a prospective bride has beautiful eyes, the bridegroom need not have the rest of her body checked out for possible blemishes. Black eyes are not considered as beautiful as white ones. [I suppose the reference is to blue ones. Ed.]

יפה תאר, as in Isaiah 44,13 במחוגה יתארהו, “he marks out a form with a stylus.” This is a reference to the shape of her nose, forehead, lips and cheeks.

יפה מראה, healthy looking skin.

Sforno

English

יפת תאר, possessed of beautiful features, as described in Isaiah 44,13 ובמחוגה יתארהו.

ויפת מראה, her skin looked very healthy. Colour is something which attracts closer inspection by the sense of sight.

Radak (David Kimhi)

English

ועיני לאה רכות, although her eyes were beautiful, they had a habit of breaking out in tears constantly. She was given to weeping excessively.

יפת תאר ויפת מראה, but Rachel suffered from no physical blemish at all, but was perfect both in shape and in facial features. The word מראה describes the appearance of one’s skin, healthy or otherwise, as well as the colour of her hair, i.e. black. In other words, the part of one’s body normally visible to all is described as מראה.

Da'at Zekenim

English

ועיני לאה רכות, “Leah’s eyes were soft, so that due to her beautiful eyes she appeared beautiful all over,”[the expression רך appears next to טוב, “good, when” the calf served by Avraham to the angels in Genesis 18,7 is described) in contrast to Rachel, whose body was beautiful, but whose eyes detracted from this as she cried a lot, fearing that her lot would be to be married to Esau after Yaakov would divorce her due to her barrenness. (No source quoted for this unusual interpretation)
