Parachat Vayeshev

Aliya 1

Israël dit à Joseph: "Tes frères font paître les troupeaux à Sichem. Viens donc, je veux t’envoyer auprès d’eux." Il lui répondit:"Je suis prêt."

Aliya 3

23 וַיְהִ֕י כַּֽאֲשֶׁר־בָּ֥א יוֹסֵ֖ף אֶל־אֶחָ֑יו וַיַּפְשִׁ֤יטוּ אֶת־יוֹסֵף֙ אֶת־כֻּתׇּנְתּ֔וֹ אֶת־כְּתֹ֥נֶת הַפַּסִּ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָלָֽיו׃ En effet, lorsque Joseph fut arrivé près de ses frères ils le dépouillèrent de sa robe, de la tunique à rayures dont il était vêtu;
Cette citerne était vide et sans eau.
28 וַיַּֽעַבְרוּ֩ אֲנָשִׁ֨ים מִדְיָנִ֜ים סֹֽחֲרִ֗ים וַֽיִּמְשְׁכוּ֙ וַיַּֽעֲל֤וּ אֶת־יוֹסֵף֙ מִן־הַבּ֔וֹר וַיִּמְכְּר֧וּ אֶת־יוֹסֵ֛ף לַיִּשְׁמְעֵאלִ֖ים בְּעֶשְׂרִ֣ים כָּ֑סֶף וַיָּבִ֥יאוּ אֶת־יוֹסֵ֖ף מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃ Or, plusieurs marchands madianites vinrent à passer, qui tirèrent et firent remonter Joseph de la citerne, puis le vendirent aux Ismaélites pour vingt pièces d’argent. Ceux ci emmenèrent Joseph en Égypte.
31 וַיִּקְח֖וּ אֶת־כְּתֹ֣נֶת יוֹסֵ֑ף וַֽיִּשְׁחֲטוּ֙ שְׂעִ֣יר עִזִּ֔ים וַיִּטְבְּל֥וּ אֶת־הַכֻּתֹּ֖נֶת בַּדָּֽם׃ Ils prirent la robe de Joseph, égorgèrent un chevreau et trempèrent la robe dans son sang;
32 וַֽיְשַׁלְּח֞וּ אֶת־כְּתֹ֣נֶת הַפַּסִּ֗ים וַיָּבִ֙יאוּ֙ אֶל־אֲבִיהֶ֔ם וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ זֹ֣את מָצָ֑אנוּ הַכֶּר־נָ֗א הַכְּתֹ֧נֶת בִּנְךָ֛ הִ֖וא אִם־לֹֽא׃ puis ils envoyèrent cette tunique à rayures, qu’on apporta à leur père en disant: "Voici ce que nous avons trouvé; examine si c’est la tunique de ton fils ou non."
36 וְהַ֨מְּדָנִ֔ים מָכְר֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ אֶל־מִצְרָ֑יִם לְפֽוֹטִיפַר֙ סְרִ֣יס פַּרְעֹ֔ה שַׂ֖ר הַטַּבָּחִֽים׃ {פ}

Ramban (Nachmanides)

English

AND WE SHALL CONCEAL HIS BLOOD. “We shall hide the fact of his death.” This is Rashi’s language. And Onkelos similarly says, “and we shall cover up his blood.”
The correct interpretation is as its literal sense indicates. It is the custom of those who kill in secret to slay the victim, bury him, and conceal his blood in the earth, even as it says, And he hid him in the sand. This was why Judah said to them, “By casting him into the pit we shall kill our brother and cover his blood with dust, for it will so be accounted to us.”
Now Reuben had instructed them not to spill blood with their hands. Rather, they should throw him into the pit and let him perish there, since the punishment of he who causes bloodshed is not the same as the punishment of one who actually commits the murder. Judah now came and said, “This too will be accounted to us as murder, as if we had killed him.” Such indeed is the truth, as the verse says, And him [Uriah] thou hast slain with the sword of the children of Ammon. The difference between actual murder and causing death is that there is a greater punishment for a murderer and a lesser punishment for the one who indirectly causes death. Thus, the two of them [Reuben and Judah] spoke the truth.

מה בצע, “what good, what purpose,” revenge has one of two purposes; 1) either it is intended to pay back the offending party, in which case killing Joseph does not teach him a lesson, but we would be punishing ourselves. Sooner or later our hearts and our conscience would start bothering us and we would be unable to assuage our conscience. 2) revenge could be designed to act as a deterrent to other people, warning them not to become guilty of the crime for which this offender had been punished. This purpose could not be fulfilled in this case, as the very fact that we have killed Joseph will have to be concealed, so that his fate could not serve as a deterrent to anyone.

?מה בצע, “what financial advantage,” as per Onkelos.

כי נהרוג את אחינו, what does this mean seeing Reuven had already prevented them from killing their brother outright? We must therefore understand Yehudah’s words as meaning: “what are we going to do with him? If we leave him in the pit this is just as bad as having killed him.”

וכסינו את דמו, and cover his blood. He meant they had to conceal his death from their father.
