And any man, whether young or old, of the house of the stock of Israel, or of the sojourners who sojourn by dwelling among you, who hunteth venison of beast or fowl proper to be eaten, shall pour out its blood when it is killed; and if what he hath killed be not destroyed (or strangled?), let the blood be covered with dust.

Ibn Ezra

a game animal like a deer or a gazelle
or a bird that may be eaten We learn from this verse that we also may not permit a resident alien to eat pork, or horseflesh, or a bird of prey in the land of Israel. We are commanded not to eat blood [:10]. When we slaughter an animal fit to be sacrificed, we are further commanded to spill its blood on the Altar only [:4], and nowhere else. Consequently, God commanded us to conceal the blood of any slaughtered animal which is not offered as a sacrifice — probably so that no one might see the blood of a deer, or a gazelle, or a bird, and mistakenly think that it was a sacrifice to a foreign god. In the parasha of R’eh I shall explain a more profound meaning to this verse [comment on Deuteronomy 12:25].

אשר יצוד ציד. Seeing that in the main, these free roaming beasts’ habitat is in desolate regions of the earth, areas in which the kind of demons we mentioned are at home, (compare Isaiah 13,21 “there ostriches shall make their home and there shall satyrs (demons) dance.”) the Torah therefore forbids to leave the blood of these beasts exposed and ordered us to cover it with earth in order to forestall any chance that this blood be used to feed the demons. It goes on to say:
