Aliya 4

16 וַיְהִי֩ בַיּ֨וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֜י בִּֽהְיֹ֣ת הַבֹּ֗קֶר וַיְהִי֩ קֹלֹ֨ת וּבְרָקִ֜ים וְעָנָ֤ן כָּבֵד֙ עַל־הָהָ֔ר וְקֹ֥ל שֹׁפָ֖ר חָזָ֣ק מְאֹ֑ד וַיֶּחֱרַ֥ד כׇּל־הָעָ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ Or, au troisième jour, le matin venu, il y eut des tonnerres et des éclairs et une nuée épaisse sur la montagne et un son de cor très intense. Tout le peuple frissonna dans le camp.
18 וְהַ֤ר סִינַי֙ עָשַׁ֣ן כֻּלּ֔וֹ מִ֠פְּנֵ֠י אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָרַ֥ד עָלָ֛יו יְהֹוָ֖ה בָּאֵ֑שׁ וַיַּ֤עַל עֲשָׁנוֹ֙ כְּעֶ֣שֶׁן הַכִּבְשָׁ֔ן וַיֶּחֱרַ֥ד כׇּל־הָהָ֖ר מְאֹֽד׃ Or, la montagne de Sinaï était toute fumante, parce que le Seigneur y était descendu au sein de la flamme; sa fumée montait comme la fumée d’une fournaise et la montagne entière tremblait violemment.

23 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל־יְהֹוָ֔ה לֹא־יוּכַ֣ל הָעָ֔ם לַעֲלֹ֖ת אֶל־הַ֣ר סִינָ֑י כִּֽי־אַתָּ֞ה הַעֵדֹ֤תָה בָּ֙נוּ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הַגְבֵּ֥ל אֶת־הָהָ֖ר וְקִדַּשְׁתּֽוֹ׃ Moïse répondit au Seigneur: "Le peuple ne saurait monter sur le mont Sinaï, puisque tu nous as avertis par ces paroles: ‘Défends la montagne et déclare-la sainte!’"

And they journeyed from Refidim and they came to the desert of Sinai [(Just as they came to the desert of Sinai in a state of penitence, so they had left Refidim in a state of penitence.)] And Israel encamped there ["as one man, with one heart"] opposite [i.e., east of] the mountain.

Commentaires sur Exode 19:2

Rashi

English

1 "They traveled from Rephidim" - Why did the text need to go back and make explicit from where they had traveled? Had it not already written that they had been camping in Rephidim, so it would be known that they had traveled from there. Rather, it came to compare their traveling from Rephidim to their arrival in the Sinai desert -- just as their arrival to the desert of Sinai through repentance, their traveling from Rephidim was through repentance. (Mekhilta)

2 "Israel camped there" - Like one person with one heart. But all of their other encampments took place with complaining and disagreement. (Mekhilta)

3 "Next to the mountain" - To the east (Mekhilta), and everywhere where you find the word "next to," it means 'faced to the east.'

The departure from Refidim was for the express purpose of getting to the desert of Sinai where the mountain of G’d (Chorev) was located. The people knew that once they would arrive there they would worship the Lord there (Exodus 3,12).
