Aliya 4

16 וַיְהִי֩ בַיּ֨וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֜י בִּֽהְיֹ֣ת הַבֹּ֗קֶר וַיְהִי֩ קֹלֹ֨ת וּבְרָקִ֜ים וְעָנָ֤ן כָּבֵד֙ עַל־הָהָ֔ר וְקֹ֥ל שֹׁפָ֖ר חָזָ֣ק מְאֹ֑ד וַיֶּחֱרַ֥ד כׇּל־הָעָ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ Or, au troisième jour, le matin venu, il y eut des tonnerres et des éclairs et une nuée épaisse sur la montagne et un son de cor très intense. Tout le peuple frissonna dans le camp.
18 וְהַ֤ר סִינַי֙ עָשַׁ֣ן כֻּלּ֔וֹ מִ֠פְּנֵ֠י אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָרַ֥ד עָלָ֛יו יְהֹוָ֖ה בָּאֵ֑שׁ וַיַּ֤עַל עֲשָׁנוֹ֙ כְּעֶ֣שֶׁן הַכִּבְשָׁ֔ן וַיֶּחֱרַ֥ד כׇּל־הָהָ֖ר מְאֹֽד׃ Or, la montagne de Sinaï était toute fumante, parce que le Seigneur y était descendu au sein de la flamme; sa fumée montait comme la fumée d’une fournaise et la montagne entière tremblait violemment.

23 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל־יְהֹוָ֔ה לֹא־יוּכַ֣ל הָעָ֔ם לַעֲלֹ֖ת אֶל־הַ֣ר סִינָ֑י כִּֽי־אַתָּ֞ה הַעֵדֹ֤תָה בָּ֙נוּ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הַגְבֵּ֥ל אֶת־הָהָ֖ר וְקִדַּשְׁתּֽוֹ׃ Moïse répondit au Seigneur: "Le peuple ne saurait monter sur le mont Sinaï, puisque tu nous as avertis par ces paroles: ‘Défends la montagne et déclare-la sainte!’"

You have seen [with your own eyes] what I did to Egypt [on your behalf], and I bore you [(all of you in one day, from the places of your dispersion in the land of Goshen, to Ramses, assembling you for the Exodus)] on eagles' wings, [My angel protecting you from the projectiles of the foe (see 14:19-20), as an eagle, the highest flying of the birds, protects its young from other birds by carrying them on its wings], and I brought you to Me.

Commentaires sur Exode 19:4

Rashi

English

"You have seen" (Shabbat 86b) It is not a tradition in your hands or words which I transmitted to you, and I did not testify to you through witnesses. Rather, you saw what I did to Egypt, and how many sins they had been liable for before you became attached to them, and I did not pay them for their sins except through you.

"I will lift you" - (Mekhilta) This is the day that Israel arrived in Ramses. The Israelites were scattered across the whole land of Goshen, and in a small amount of time when they went to journey and leave, they were all gathered to Ramses. And Onkelos translated "and I will raise" as "I will lift you" similar to "I will carry you," he edited the language in order to give respect to heaven.

"On the wings of eagles" - As an eagle carries its young on its wings. All of the other birds place their children between their wings as they are afraid of another bird swooping down upon their backs. But the eagle is only afraid of humans who may shoot an arrow at it, since no other bird will swoop on its back. Therefore, it places its young upon its back and says, 'better that the arrow enter into me and not into my children.' I [God] also did this, [as it is written:] "the angel of God traveled going before the camp of Israel" (Exodus 14:19) and "[the Angel of God] came between the camp of Egypt [and between the camp of Israel]" (Exodus 14:20) and the Egyptians were throwing arrows and catapulting stones and the cloud took their blow.

"And I will bring you to me" - according to its translation [into Aramaic by Onkelos].

Targum Jonathan

English

Ye have seen what I did to the Mizraee; and how I bare you upon the clouds as upon eagles' wings from Pelusin, to take you to the place of the sanctuary, there to solemnize the Pascha; and in the same night brought you back to Pelusin, and from thence have brought you nigh, to (receive) the doctrine of My law.

Ibn Ezra

Ramban (Nachmanides)

English

AND I BROUGHT YOU UNTO MYSELF. I.e., “to the place of My Glory, namely, this mountain where My Presence abides there with you.” Now Onkelos translated: “and I brought you near to My service.” [To avoid a literal translation], Onkelos adapted an expression of respect towards Him Who is on high.

Rashbam

English

על כנפי נשרים, for I have brought you across the Sea on dry land just like eagles which cross the seas in their flight. They had also not suffered any harm during this crossing, just as the eagle transports his young on its wings protecting them against harm from below. (Deuteronomy 32,11).

Sforno

English

And how I bore you on eagles' wings - a novel way, that no one had gone through before, just like the eagle that takes care of its young in the height of the sky, where there is no other type of bird, and this is to distinguish you from all the other peoples and their pursuits, to be for Me.
