How can we answer your question as to the purpose of what you accuse us of having done?

What can we possibly say in justification? How could we prove that we did not do what you accuse us of?

ומה נצטדק? how could we justify ourselves by proving that we have been set up?

האלוקים מצא את עון עבדך, we are guilty of something but not of what you accuse us of. In this matter we have not sinned at all. We are guilty of a sin committed many years ago and G’d has seen fit to punish us for that sin using you as His agent. The principle has been spelled out in Samuel I 24,14 מרשעים יצא הרשע, “wicked deeds originate with the wicked. ”The subject is also discussed in Taanit 18 “G’d has many executioners. He has many lions and bears that kill us and injure us. The reason that G’d did not deliver me into the power of lions, etc., but into your hand (a conversation between Lulianus and Papus) instead of having me killed by an animal, is to give Him an opportunity to punish you for spilling my blood.”

ומה נצעק, what good would it do if we loudly proclaim our innocence. In the matter of the goblet we cannot argue that we have already previously proved our honesty, as we could in respect of the money we had brought back.

G’d found our guilt and has now devised a way to trap us and to punish us. This corresponds to how the prophet Ezekiel 3,20 describes G’d’s modus operandi, saying ונתתי מכשול לפניו, “I shall place a stumbling block before him” (a penitent who slides back into sin).
