21

1 כִּי־יִמָּצֵ֣א חָלָ֗ל בָּאֲדָמָה֙ אֲשֶׁר֩ יְהֹוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ נֹתֵ֤ן לְךָ֙ לְרִשְׁתָּ֔הּ נֹפֵ֖ל בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה לֹ֥א נוֹדַ֖ע מִ֥י הִכָּֽהוּ׃ "Si l’on trouve, dans le pays que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne en possession, un cadavre gisant en plein champ, et que l’auteur du meurtre soit resté inconnu,
3 וְהָיָ֣ה הָעִ֔יר הַקְּרֹבָ֖ה אֶל־הֶחָלָ֑ל וְלָֽקְח֡וּ זִקְנֵי֩ הָעִ֨יר הַהִ֜וא עֶגְלַ֣ת בָּקָ֗ר אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־עֻבַּד֙ בָּ֔הּ אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־מָשְׁכָ֖ה בְּעֹֽל׃ La ville la plus rapprochée du cadavre étant déterminée, les anciens de cette ville prendront une jeune vache qu’on n’aura pas encore employée au travail, qui n’aura porté aucun joug.
Pardonne à ton peuple Israël, que tu as racheté, Seigneur!

Targum Jonathan

English

And the priests shall say: Let there be expiation for thy people Israel, whom Thou, O Lord, hast redeemed, and lay not the guilt of innocent blood upon Thy people Israel; but let him who hath done the murder be revealed. And they shall be expiated concerning the blood; but straightway there will come forth a swarm of worms from the excrement of the heifer, and spread abroad, and move to. the place where the murderer is, and crawl over him: and the magistrates shall take him, and judge him.

Ibn Ezra

English

forgive your people For we were negligent, and we did not guard the dangerous highways.

The word will secure forgiveness omits the tav of the nitpa‘el form (as in “that all women may be taught” [Ezekiel 23: 48]), which is a combination of two forms: the hitpa‘el form and the nif‘al form. ...

Scripture mentions whom You have redeemed, as if to say: Just as You redeemed them from Egypt, for the sake of Your kindness, so may You redeem them from this blood, and its punishment.

Sforno

English

Please Lord, grant atonement to Your people, on behalf of the one who has spilled the blood. This is a veiled request to bring the murderer to justice as it is not given to man to do this. Compare Ketuvot 30 “if someone is guilty of judicial execution (and human justice did not reach him) he will either be killed by the secular authorities (for something else he is accused of) or terrorists will attack him.”

ונכפר להם הדם, it will be atoned through heavenly judgment, the heavenly agent spilling the murderer’s blood accomplishing this. It will appear in the eyes of man as if the matter had taken care of itself independently. [one cannot pinpoint why the party concerned died a violent death, not knowing what he had been guilty of. Ed.]
