1 לֹ֥א תִשָּׂ֖א שֵׁ֣מַע שָׁ֑וְא אַל־תָּ֤שֶׁת יָֽדְךָ֙ עִם־רָשָׁ֔ע לִהְיֹ֖ת עֵ֥ד חָמָֽס׃ "N’accueille point un rapport mensonger. Ne sois pas complice d’un méchant, en servant de témoin à l’iniquité.

2 לֹֽא־תִהְיֶ֥ה אַחֲרֵֽי־רַבִּ֖ים לְרָעֹ֑ת וְלֹא־תַעֲנֶ֣ה עַל־רִ֗ב לִנְטֹ֛ת אַחֲרֵ֥י רַבִּ֖ים לְהַטֹּֽת׃ Ne suis point la multitude pour mal faire; et n’opine point, sur un litige, dans le sens de la majorité, pour faire fléchir le droit.

3 וְדָ֕ל לֹ֥א תֶהְדַּ֖ר בְּרִיבֽוֹ׃ {ס} Ne sois point partial pour le pauvre, dans son procès.

4 כִּ֣י תִפְגַּ֞ע שׁ֧וֹר אֹֽיִבְךָ֛ א֥וֹ חֲמֹר֖וֹ תֹּעֶ֑ה הָשֵׁ֥ב תְּשִׁיבֶ֖נּוּ לֽוֹ׃ {ס} "Si tu trouves le bœuf ou l’âne de ton ennemi, égaré, aie soin de le lui ramener.

5 כִּֽי־תִרְאֶ֞ה חֲמ֣וֹר שֹׂנַאֲךָ֗ רֹבֵץ֙ תַּ֣חַת מַשָּׂא֔וֹ וְחָדַלְתָּ֖ מֵעֲזֹ֣ב ל֑וֹ עָזֹ֥ב תַּעֲזֹ֖ב עִמּֽוֹ׃ {ס} "Si tu vois l’âne de ton ennemi succomber sous sa charge, garde toi de l’abandonner; aide-lui au contraire à le décharger.

6 לֹ֥א תַטֶּ֛ה מִשְׁפַּ֥ט אֶבְיֹנְךָ֖ בְּרִיבֽוֹ׃ "Ne fais pas fléchir le droit de ton prochain indigent, s’il a un procès.

7 מִדְּבַר־שֶׁ֖קֶר תִּרְחָ֑ק וְנָקִ֤י וְצַדִּיק֙ אַֽל־תַּהֲרֹ֔ג כִּ֥י לֹא־אַצְדִּ֖יק רָשָֽׁע׃ Fuis la parole de mensonge et ne frappe point de mort celui qui est innocent et juste, car je n’absoudrais point le prévaricateur.

8 וְשֹׁ֖חַד לֹ֣א תִקָּ֑ח כִּ֤י הַשֹּׁ֙חַד֙ יְעַוֵּ֣ר פִּקְחִ֔ים וִֽיסַלֵּ֖ף דִּבְרֵ֥י צַדִּיקִֽים׃ N’accepte point de présents corrupteurs; car la corruption trouble la vue des clairvoyants et fausse la parole des justes.

9 וְגֵ֖ר לֹ֣א תִלְחָ֑ץ וְאַתֶּ֗ם יְדַעְתֶּם֙ אֶת־נֶ֣פֶשׁ הַגֵּ֔ר כִּֽי־גֵרִ֥ים הֱיִיתֶ֖ם בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃ Tu ne vexeras point l’étranger. Vous connaissez, vous, le cœur de l’étranger, vous qui avez été étrangers dans le pays d’Égypte!

10 וְשֵׁ֥שׁ שָׁנִ֖ים תִּזְרַ֣ע אֶת־אַרְצֶ֑ךָ וְאָסַפְתָּ֖ אֶת־תְּבוּאָתָֽהּ׃ Six années tu ensemenceras ta terre et en recueilleras le produit;

11 וְהַשְּׁבִיעִ֞ת תִּשְׁמְטֶ֣נָּה וּנְטַשְׁתָּ֗הּ וְאָֽכְלוּ֙ אֶבְיֹנֵ֣י עַמֶּ֔ךָ וְיִתְרָ֕ם תֹּאכַ֖ל חַיַּ֣ת הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה כֵּֽן־תַּעֲשֶׂ֥ה לְכַרְמְךָ֖ לְזֵיתֶֽךָ׃ mais la septième, tu lui donneras du repos et en abandonneras les fruits, pour que les indigents de ton peuple en jouissent, le surplus pourra être consommé par les animaux des champs. Ainsi en useras-tu pour ta vigne et pour ton plant d’oliviers.

12 שֵׁ֤שֶׁת יָמִים֙ תַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה מַעֲשֶׂ֔יךָ וּבַיּ֥וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֖י תִּשְׁבֹּ֑ת לְמַ֣עַן יָנ֗וּחַ שֽׁוֹרְךָ֙ וַחֲמֹרֶ֔ךָ וְיִנָּפֵ֥שׁ בֶּן־אֲמָתְךָ֖ וְהַגֵּֽר׃ Six jours durant tu t’occuperas de tes travaux, mais au septième jour tu chômeras; afin que ton bœuf et ton âne se reposent, que puissent respirer le fils de ton esclave et l’étranger.

13 וּבְכֹ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־אָמַ֥רְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶ֖ם תִּשָּׁמֵ֑רוּ וְשֵׁ֨ם אֱלֹהִ֤ים אֲחֵרִים֙ לֹ֣א תַזְכִּ֔ירוּ לֹ֥א יִשָּׁמַ֖ע עַל־פִּֽיךָ׃ Attachez-vous scrupuleusement à tout ce que je vous ai prescrit. Ne mentionnez jamais le nom de divinités étrangères, qu’on ne l’entende point dans ta bouche!

14 שָׁלֹ֣שׁ רְגָלִ֔ים תָּחֹ֥ג לִ֖י בַּשָּׁנָֽה׃ Trois fois l’an, tu célébreras des fêtes en mon honneur.

15 אֶת־חַ֣ג הַמַּצּוֹת֮ תִּשְׁמֹר֒ שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִים֩ תֹּאכַ֨ל מַצּ֜וֹת כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוִּיתִ֗ךָ לְמוֹעֵד֙ חֹ֣דֶשׁ הָֽאָבִ֔יב כִּי־ב֖וֹ יָצָ֣אתָ מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וְלֹא־יֵרָא֥וּ פָנַ֖י רֵיקָֽם׃ Et d’abord, tu observeras la fête des Azymes: durant sept jours tu mangeras des pains azymes, ainsi que je te l’ai ordonné, à l’époque du mois de la germination, car c’est alors que tu es sorti de l’Égypte et l’on ne paraîtra point devant ma face les mains vides.

16 וְחַ֤ג הַקָּצִיר֙ בִּכּוּרֵ֣י מַעֲשֶׂ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר תִּזְרַ֖ע בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה וְחַ֤ג הָֽאָסִף֙ בְּצֵ֣את הַשָּׁנָ֔ה בְּאׇסְפְּךָ֥ אֶֽת־מַעֲשֶׂ֖יךָ מִן־הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ Puis, la fête de la Moisson, fête des prémices de tes biens, que tu auras semés dans la terre; et la fête de l’Automne, au déclin de l’année, lorsque tu rentreras ta récolte des champs.

17 שָׁלֹ֥שׁ פְּעָמִ֖ים בַּשָּׁנָ֑ה יֵרָאֶה֙ כׇּל־זְכ֣וּרְךָ֔ אֶל־פְּנֵ֖י הָאָדֹ֥ן ׀ יְהֹוָֽה׃ Trois fois par an, tous tes mâles paraîtront par-devant le Souverain, l’Éternel.

18 לֹֽא־תִזְבַּ֥ח עַל־חָמֵ֖ץ דַּם־זִבְחִ֑י וְלֹֽא־יָלִ֥ין חֵֽלֶב־חַגִּ֖י עַד־בֹּֽקֶר׃ Tu ne verseras point, en présence du pain levé, le sang de mon sacrifice; et la graisse de mes victimes ne séjournera pas jusqu’au matin sans être offerte.

19 רֵאשִׁ֗ית בִּכּוּרֵי֙ אַדְמָ֣תְךָ֔ תָּבִ֕יא בֵּ֖ית יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ לֹֽא־תְבַשֵּׁ֥ל גְּדִ֖י בַּחֲלֵ֥ב אִמּֽוֹ׃ {פ}
Les prémices nouvelles de ton sol, tu les apporteras dans la maison de l’Éternel ton Dieu. Tu ne feras point cuire un chevreau dans le lait de sa mère.

20 הִנֵּ֨ה אָנֹכִ֜י שֹׁלֵ֤חַ מַלְאָךְ֙ לְפָנֶ֔יךָ לִשְׁמׇרְךָ֖ בַּדָּ֑רֶךְ וְלַהֲבִ֣יאֲךָ֔ אֶל־הַמָּק֖וֹם אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֲכִנֹֽתִי׃ "Or, j’enverrai devant toi un mandataire, chargé de veiller sur ta marche et de te conduire au lieu que je t’ai destiné.

21 הִשָּׁ֧מֶר מִפָּנָ֛יו וּשְׁמַ֥ע בְּקֹל֖וֹ אַל־תַּמֵּ֣ר בּ֑וֹ כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יִשָּׂא֙ לְפִשְׁעֲכֶ֔ם כִּ֥י שְׁמִ֖י בְּקִרְבּֽוֹ׃ Sois circonspect à son égard et docile à sa voix; ne lui résiste point! Il ne pardonnerait pas votre rébellion, car ma divinité est en lui.

22 כִּ֣י אִם־שָׁמ֤וֹעַ תִּשְׁמַע֙ בְּקֹל֔וֹ וְעָשִׂ֕יתָ כֹּ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֲדַבֵּ֑ר וְאָֽיַבְתִּי֙ אֶת־אֹ֣יְבֶ֔יךָ וְצַרְתִּ֖י אֶת־צֹרְרֶֽיךָ׃ Que si tu es toujours docile à sa voix, si tu accomplis toutes mes paroles, je serai l’ennemi de tes ennemis et je persécuterai tes persécuteurs.

23 כִּֽי־יֵלֵ֣ךְ מַלְאָכִי֮ לְפָנֶ֒יךָ֒ וֶהֱבִֽיאֲךָ֗ אֶל־הָֽאֱמֹרִי֙ וְהַ֣חִתִּ֔י וְהַפְּרִזִּי֙ וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י הַחִוִּ֖י וְהַיְבוּסִ֑י וְהִכְחַדְתִּֽיו׃ Lorsque mon mandataire, guidant tes pas, t’aura introduit chez l’Amorréen, le Héthéen, le Phérézéen, le Cananéen, le Hévéen, le Jébuséen et que je les aurai exterminés,

24 לֹֽא־תִשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֤ה לֵאלֹֽהֵיהֶם֙ וְלֹ֣א תׇֽעׇבְדֵ֔ם וְלֹ֥א תַעֲשֶׂ֖ה כְּמַֽעֲשֵׂיהֶ֑ם כִּ֤י הָרֵס֙ תְּהָ֣רְסֵ֔ם וְשַׁבֵּ֥ר תְּשַׁבֵּ֖ר מַצֵּבֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ ne te prosterne point devant leurs dieux, ne les sers point et n’imite point leurs rites; au contraire, tu dois les, renverser, tu dois briser leurs monuments.

25 וַעֲבַדְתֶּ֗ם אֵ֚ת יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם וּבֵרַ֥ךְ אֶֽת־לַחְמְךָ֖ וְאֶת־מֵימֶ֑יךָ וַהֲסִרֹתִ֥י מַחֲלָ֖ה מִקִּרְבֶּֽךָ׃ {ס} Vous servirez uniquement l’Éternel votre Dieu; et il bénira ta nourriture et ta boisson et j’écarterai tout fléau du milieu de toi.

26 לֹ֥א תִהְיֶ֛ה מְשַׁכֵּלָ֥ה וַעֲקָרָ֖ה בְּאַרְצֶ֑ךָ אֶת־מִסְפַּ֥ר יָמֶ֖יךָ אֲמַלֵּֽא׃ "Nulle femme n’avortera, nulle ne sera stérile dans ton pays; je comblerai la mesure de tes jours.

27 אֶת־אֵֽימָתִי֙ אֲשַׁלַּ֣ח לְפָנֶ֔יךָ וְהַמֹּתִי֙ אֶת־כׇּל־הָעָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר תָּבֹ֖א בָּהֶ֑ם וְנָתַתִּ֧י אֶת־כׇּל־אֹיְבֶ֛יךָ אֵלֶ֖יךָ עֹֽרֶף׃ J’enverrai ma terreur devant toi et je jetterai le trouble en toute population chez qui tu pénétreras et je mettrai tous tes ennemis en fuite devant toi.

28 וְשָׁלַחְתִּ֥י אֶת־הַצִּרְעָ֖ה לְפָנֶ֑יךָ וְגֵרְשָׁ֗ה אֶת־הַחִוִּ֧י אֶת־הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֛י וְאֶת־הַחִתִּ֖י מִלְּפָנֶֽיךָ׃ Je te ferai précéder par le frelon, qui chassera le Hévéen, le Cananéen et le Héthéen de devant toi.

29 לֹ֧א אֲגָרְשֶׁ֛נּוּ מִפָּנֶ֖יךָ בְּשָׁנָ֣ה אֶחָ֑ת פֶּן־תִּהְיֶ֤ה הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ שְׁמָמָ֔ה וְרַבָּ֥ה עָלֶ֖יךָ חַיַּ֥ת הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ Je ne l’expulserai pas de devant toi en une seule année, car le pays deviendrait un désert et les bêtes sauvages se multiplieraient à tes dépens:

30 מְעַ֥ט מְעַ֛ט אֲגָרְשֶׁ֖נּוּ מִפָּנֶ֑יךָ עַ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּפְרֶ֔ה וְנָחַלְתָּ֖ אֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ׃ je l’expulserai de devant toi successivement, jusqu’à ce que, devenu nombreux, tu puisses occuper tout le pays.

31 וְשַׁתִּ֣י אֶת־גְּבֻלְךָ֗ מִיַּם־סוּף֙ וְעַד־יָ֣ם פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וּמִמִּדְבָּ֖ר עַד־הַנָּהָ֑ר כִּ֣י ׀ אֶתֵּ֣ן בְּיֶדְכֶ֗ם אֵ֚ת יֹשְׁבֵ֣י הָאָ֔רֶץ וְגֵרַשְׁתָּ֖מוֹ מִפָּנֶֽיךָ׃ Je fixerai tes limites depuis la mer des Joncs jusqu’à la mer des Philistins et depuis le Désert jusqu’au Fleuve; car je livrerai en ta main les habitants de cette contrée et tu les chasseras de devant toi.

32 לֹֽא־תִכְרֹ֥ת לָהֶ֛ם וְלֵאלֹֽהֵיהֶ֖ם בְּרִֽית׃ Tu ne feras de pacte avec eux ni avec leurs divinités.

33 לֹ֤א יֵשְׁבוּ֙ בְּאַרְצְךָ֔ פֶּן־יַחֲטִ֥יאוּ אֹתְךָ֖ לִ֑י כִּ֤י תַעֲבֹד֙ אֶת־אֱלֹ֣הֵיהֶ֔ם כִּֽי־יִהְיֶ֥ה לְךָ֖ לְמוֹקֵֽשׁ׃ {פ}
Qu’ils ne subsistent point sur ton territoire! Ils te feraient prévariquer contre moi; car tu adorerais leurs divinités et ce serait pour toi un écueil."

ומלת אל תמר בו קשה. והנה נראה הטעם כמו וימרו בי. רק היה ראוי להיותו תמרה. על כן הוצרכו חכמי ספרד לאמר בו כי הוא מפעלי הכפל על דרך ויסב אלהים את העם כי כל הגזרה היא מפעלי הכפל. כי ורחבה ונסבה מבנין נפעל. כמו ונבלה שם מגזרת בלל. ונבקה רוח מצרים מגזרת בוקק. ואל תתמה בעבור שהם שנים שרשים והטעם אחד כי הנה שורר בביתו כי שרית עם אלהים. וכמוהו אל תמר בו וממר ליולדתו. על משקל מכס. שהוא מגזרת תכוסו על השה. מפעלי הכפל:

וטעם בקרבו. משל לעגול שהנקודה היא קרובה אל כל מרחק. על כן היה כבוד השם בקרב המחנה. ונוסע בתוך המחנות. וכן כתוב כי אתה ה' בקרב העם הזה וכתוב ויוצר רוח אדם בקרבו. ואל תשתומם בעבור שהוא כתוב כי אם שמוע תשמע בקולו. ואחר כן ועשית כל אשר אדבר והנה אתן לך משל כל חכמי המדות הביאו ראיות גמורות כי עצם הלבנה גוף מקבל אור השמש. כי הוא בעצמו אין נוגה לו. ובעבור זה תקדר השמש בהתחבר הלבנה עמה ביום. ושניהם בגלגלים הדומים לגלגל המזלות. ואין הקדרות רק שתכנס הלבנה תחת השמש ושתיהן עגולות. והנה פני הלבנה שהם לצד השמש כלם אור. ופניה שהם למעלה ממנו חשך ולא אור. והנה תסתיר אור השמש. גם במחצית חדש הלבנה בהכנס צל הארץ בין השמש ובין הלבנה לא ישאר ללבנה אור והנה ידענו כי אור הלבנה בלילה תאיר האויר והנה אם אמר ראובן זה אור הלבנה יאמר אמת. ואם אמר שמעון זה אור החמה יאמר אמת:

Ramban (Nachmanides)

English

For he will not pardon your transgression; for My Name is in him. He is saying: “Be not rebellious against him, for he will not pardon your transgression if you rebel against his word, for he who rebels against him, rebels against the Great Name which is in him, and he deserves to be cut off by the attribute of justice.” It is possible that the expression My Name is in Him, is connected to the above verses: hearken to his voice, for My Name is in him, and his voice is the voice of the Supreme One.

אל תמר בו, the word תמר is a derivative of the root המר as in המר ימירנו (Leviticus 27,33) When the same word appears without a dagesh in the letter מ, is derived from the root נמר as in Jeremiah 48,11 וריחו לא נמר, “and his fragrance is unspoiled.” The construction of אל תמר is parallel to the construction of אל תפל, “do not omit,” in Esther 6,10 an imperative in the transitive conjugation hiphil of the root נפל. It does not have anything to do with the “refusal” implied in the root מרה in the sequence מרה מריתי in Lamentations 1,3. If the construction תמר in our verse were related to that root the Torah should have written אל תמרה without the dagesh in the letter מ, just as it did in Joshua I,18 where it does have that meaning and the text reads אל ימרה את פיך, “let no one show disobedience to him,” without the dagesh in the letter מ of the word ימרה.

כי שמי בקרבו, whatever the angel commands you to do he does in My name. He does not have permission, however, to forgive anything wrong you do.

השמר מפניו, not to offend his dignity. The word is used in a sense similar to Joshua 5,9 (the angel speaking) “remove your shoe from your foot!”

ושמע בקולו, to follow in his footsteps, the reverse of what the Israelites had done (as reported) in Deuteronomy 1,28 when they were willing to listen and to follow the 10 spies who had declared that it was impossible to attain their objective, i.e. the conquest of the land of Canaan.

אל תמר בו כי לא ישא לפשעכם, if even a single individual will sin, the punishment will include his fellow Jews. This is precisely what happened when Achan had stolen from the loot of Jericho and, because his sin had been covered up, Israel lost the first battle of Ai. (Joshua refers to this as a warning in Joshua 22,20. He reminds the people that Achan was not the only one punished for this sin but that G’d [presumably because He had invested His angel with such authority. Ed.] vented His anger at the entire nation.)

כי שמי בקרבו, and it is not in his power to forgive offenses against My honor.

For he will not pardon your transgression. Wherever he is sent, he performs his mission but is unable to show favor, as it is written "May the Lord lift up His countenance", and not an angel. For My name is within him, therefore I warn you not to rebel against him as if you were rebelling against Me, since My name is within him and he will not be able to pardon your transgression, for the rebellion depends on Me. An analogy is one who rebels against the word of the treasurer who does not have the power to pardon, for the rebellion depends on the king. Rashi explains that "My name is within him" refers to Metatron whose name is like his Master's name, for Metatron has the same numerical value as Shaddai. And a reminder of this is a computation in אתב"ש coding. And Rabbi Moshe says the reason I state about him that his name is like his Master's name is that his name is spelled out in the Aleph-Beta of Rabbi Akiva, and there it enumerates the 72 names that belong to him.
