You must eat matzos for seven days, but before the first day you must remove [all] leaven from your homes; for anyone who eats chametz, that soul will be cut off from Yisrael. [Chametz is forbidden] from the first day [of Pesach] until [after] the seventh day.

Seven days [lit., "a septet of days"] shall you eat matzoth. [(Eating matzoth on the first night is obligatory, and, thereafter, optional)] But on the first day [i.e., on the eve of Pesach] you shall eliminate leaven from your houses. For whoever eats chametz, that soul [(one who has volition, but not one who is forced)] shall be cut off from Israel [and from My presence] — from the first day until the seventh day.

אך ביום הראשון, but on the first day, etc.: [the Torah now speaks of observances of the Passover in the future, as stated in verse 14 Ed.] The Torah warns that all leavened products must have been removed already on the “first” day, i.e. on the 14th of the month when the Paschal lamb has been slaughtered. Compare what our author has explained on Genesis 2,2: ויכל אלוקים ביום השביעי, “the Lord had completed on the seventh day.” He had completed on the sixth day, as the Torah described G–d as having “rested” on the seventh day.
